Chuck Berry was chosen as a recipient of the Polar Music Prize, but he was "unable to travel" and didn't attend the August 26 ceremony in Stockholm.

A video tribute from Keith was played:

“Chuck Berry, he just leapt out of the radio at me. I ate him basically, I mean I breathed him, it wasn’t just food, he was the air I breathed for many years when I was learning guitar and trying to figure out how you could be such an all rounder. Such a great voice, such a great player, and also such a great showman, you know, it was all in one package, so basically if I listened to Chuck Berry I was full for the day.

“Chuck, congratulations Chuck! And also congratulations to Sweden for recognising Chuck Berry for what he is.”

Dave Edmunds, another Berry acolyte, accepted the award on Chuck's behalf:

Congratulations, Chuck. Get well soon!

I don't know why Mr Edmunds was chosen to do the acceptance speech though. He didn't make a good impression. He read the short "speech" straight from the cards.
He didn't look comfortable during the ceremony. As oppose to Mr Peter Sellars, the other laureate who performed a very good speech.

Here is old Swedish rocker Jerry Williams (Erik Fernström, born 1942)
performing "You Never Can Tell" in front of the King and the Crown Princess
of Sweden. Jerry always does well, the old communist. Don't you think?

Do the right thing - download the torrent or bring out that old VHS copy of "Hail Hail Rock'n'Roll" and watch Keith and Chuck do their thing. Crank it up when you watch it. What's amazing is that Chuck still gets out there to do his thing. Let's give him his props.

Very nice, Keith! He really does give credit where credit is due (to guitarists he admires)

Don't know what the options were, but Edmunds wasn't some last minute fill-in. He performed 'Roll Over Beethoven' at the ceremony. His "speech" was simply a reading of Chuck's statement.

A day earler he was a featured speaker at "Polar Music Talks", discussing the legacy of Chuck Berry with journalist Jan Gradvall.

Sure, Johnny. That was just my impression from what I saw on TV. He did what he was supposed to do, I guess. He looked a bit nervous: But who wouldn't be?
Not a big deal anyway. He was just a stand-in for those who wouldn't come.

On Sept. 5, 1977 the Voyager spacecraft was launched and to this day it is exploring interstellar space. Aboard the craft is the famous Gold Record that contains information about life on Earth. Included on the Gold Record is Chuck Berry's Johnny B. Goode. All true. But in stunning recent news a communication has been received from deep space. The first words received from an extraterrestrial? "Send more Chuck Berry!" smiling smiley
