Best song(s) from the 1969-81 tours?

What would you call the highlight song(s) from the typical setlists of the Stones five key US tours, 1969-81 (and the typical European tour the following years)?

My picks:

1969: Sympathy for the Devil - The solos Mick Taylor pulled off in the later part of the tour were out of this world, and have never been duplicated since then.

1972: Brown Sugar - Every instrument is just right. Jagger's vocals are great; his physical performance even more amazing. And the song was "fresh" still. Gimme Shelter - Again, Mick Taylor's guitar work just elevates the song.

1975: If You Can't Rock Me/Get Off of My Cloud - The whole was so much more than the sum of the already-massive parts. The guitar work and drums on If You Can't Rock Me is some of the best the band ever did on stage.

1978: Just My Imagination - Although probably not a crowd favorite during the tour, in hindsight, they mined so many great subtleties from the music in the live performances, and the Keith background vocals are tough and memorable, that it's been a staple in many of their subsequent tours.

1981: Under My Thumb - The uptempo version mines new territory from the original. A great "change of pace" opener - and in the outdoor shows, with the balloon launch, even more effective.

There are probably 5-10 songs from each tour that I could listen to again and again, but the ones above really stand out as the highlights from those tours.

Mine are as follows:

1. Stray Cat Blues: 1969 Tour

2. Let It Rock: 1970 Tour

3. Brown Sugar: 1972 Tour with Mick's "Good Mornin'" opening dialogue. I don't know what venue this is from.

4. Midnight Rambler: 1973 Brussels Affair version

5. You Gotta Move: 1975 LA Friday version

6. It's Only Rock'n'Roll: 1976 Love You Live

7. Miss You: 1978 live in Texas version, before it became a war horse

8. When The Whip Comes Down: 1981 Hampton

9: Angie: 1982 Roundhay

1969 - Never a better opener than the new and fresh Jumping Jack Flash also Midnight Rambler was awesome
1972 - Brown Sugar
1973 - Midnight Rambler - Brussels for me is the greatest live recording in rock history. That is only MY opinion.
1973 - Tumbling Dice - Brussels a close second to MR
1975 - Star Star
1976 - You Gotta Move
1977 - Around and Around - El Mocambo
1978 - Beast of Burden and Miss You from Live In Texas really stand out for me. Also I love HTW and Love In Vain.
1981 - Under My Thumb was a great opener and I also like the raunchy riffs played by Keith on LSTNT.

There are more but those stand out for me.

The El Mocambo mention opens up a whole new (good) can of worms, and a lot of that material is a good new world of its own.

I'd put "Crackin Up" and "Route 66" and maybe even "Hand of Fate" from El Mocambo in a "best of the best" category.

Finally one who gets it. Your choice is excellent and on spot.

I agree on your other choices as well but there are contenders in 1978 (Beast of burden and shattered), 1972 (Midnight Rambler and Happy)

75: If Yoy Can't Rock Me, Star&*¤¤#, IORR
76: Hand Of Fate, Angie,
77: Hand Of Fate, Route 66, Mannish Boy

82: Let Me Go, Neighbours (interesting different-from-81 Keith approach).

Beast and some other assorted goodies have been better arranged from 89 and onwards....

1969 - Live With Me could be THE SINGLE BEST LIVE TRACK of this band's career, period, but WOW is that a BIG statement! Still Keith was never sharper, and the interplay b/t Keith and MT was never better. "There's a score of hair-brained children"...........

1970 - Little Queenie or Prodigal Son - hard to chose any one track, but these are so good each night! Wish there was a clear non-muddy recording, but so different, but such a groove....

1971 - Let It Rock - gives LWM from 69 a run for the money. Hard to top this for a Keith guitar song, but listen to how he and MT simple groove is so "got to let it roll on...."

1972 - Jumping Jack Flash Bye Bye Johnny, and Rocks Off - REALLY? I could've named Dice, Brown Sugar, Street Fighter, Rambler, or All Down the Line, not to mention the incredible one-off Don't Lie to Me. However, these 3 tracks from beginning (Rocks Off - 3rd), middle (BBJ), and end (JJF) serve to demonstrate why this tour was the penultimate rock tour and rock and roll gig, because this music makes you teeth itch, palms sweat, and toes tap. Equaled rarely, never surpassed.

1973 New Zealand/Australia - Rocks Off and Rip This Joint - tough call again, as there are moments of transcendence in most of these tracks. These two, howevr, demonstrate this band cooking perfectly at 500 degrees in 15 seconds. Intense, but stay tuned...

1973 Europe - Midnight Rambler - there is no rock and roll band in any world who does not wish that they could propel music at this level for 13 minutes. Throw your panties on the stage, Martha, these people mean business!!

1975 - All Down the Line - while some 75 stuff is spotty at best, this track cooks quite well. While it is tough to pull one track out, this one is just mean, particularly from LA Friday Night.................

1976 Europe - Sympathy for the Devil - see Love You Live for as smoking version of this trax as known. Reinvented groove!!!!

1977 - While Around and Around and Crackin' Up are amazing, the real treat according to Jimmy Page is Dance Little Sister. WOW!

1978 - When the Whip Comes Down see Sucking in the 70s. Go get em'!

1979 - Jumping Jack Flash - complete with bum chord in the opeing mention, but one wonders why why why why and W-H-Y? Lawdy Miss Clawdy!!!!!!

1981 - Under My Thumb - of the greatest opening numbers ever - spotty tour, but this song was got everyone up whilst dancing......

Good call! But it is from 1975. I don't think they played SFTD in Europe 1976.

Good to see some love for that version - my favourite live version thumbs up

Agree that this live version is awesome. They also played it at four of the six nights at Earls Court in '76.
