There are two acoustics on this track: The picking on what sounds like a classical guitar and a strummed acoustic. Did Keith play both parts?

mmmh never thought about it and couldn`t find anything on Nico`s site. There is an interesting mention in Martin Elliott`s Book Complete Recording Sessions:

The British duo Twice As Much had a charts hit with Sittin' On A Fence copying the same classical style. Produced by Andrew L. Oldham and guitar played by ...Jimmy Page.
Perhaps Jimmy played the on both versions? Just a thought.

Tom

I think that this is unlikely, the Stones' version was recorded at RCA in Hollywood and the Twice As Much version would have been recorded in London.

Love the track and specially Keith's backing vocals: he is not singing "what he's supposed to" if you listen closely

Glad to see the love for this one. It's definitely one of my favorites from that era!

Brian Jones - harpsichord
That is some pretty good harpsichord by Brian. Nicky Hopkins played it in later recordings. Jack Nietzsche too I believe. Yes on harpsichord on "Play with Fire".

Not that it matters, but isn't it
"Trying to make up my mind really is too hard, I find" ?

"...really is too hard to find..."?

That wouldn't make any sense, though, DP my dear.
"I find [ = in my experience] it's really too hard to make up my mind" would be standard,
but moving the "I find" on the end is 100% natural as well. I think it really is that,
although it sounded like "horrifying" to me too for years and years.

"Really is too hard to find" (a girl that doesn't do mean things to a man), was my first interpretation. Thar sure makes sense winking smiley

But listen to what he sings. The word before "find" starts with a consonant (and it's not a "d" ) - every time smiling smiley

So it can't be "I find", imo.

After repeated listens, I'm now leaning toward "so horrifying".

Great song which whose lyrics are more meaningful as one nears middle age.sad smiley

Like As Tears Go By, maybe 2000 Man.

MJ is a seriously underappreciated lyricist.

KR is even more seriously underappreciated - even MJ says that :E
(Seriously, whence the MJ words/KR music concept?? They may not collaborate much now, but they did then,
and it wasn't a clearcut "you do the words I'll do the music set-up. Or vice versa :E )

Here it how they composed.....Keith bringing up the tune and the "lyrics" Mick comes up with the final lyrics ........that's how it went's through out the sixties and seventies I guess....................Nice tune by the way.......

I love this track. This and 'Ride On, Baby' may be pure pop which isn't what The Stones were known for, but who cares as long as it is as good as these tracks?

As others have pointed out, these tracks were probably skipped on Aftermath because they gave them away to others. Today it's a bit of a shame, since the tracks are much stronger than some of the lesser tunes on side 2 on Aftermath.

I find myself agreeing with everything that's been said here about this song. The 1965-1966 period of Stones recordings is my favorite, because you get to listen to songs like this.

In conclusion: good song, great record

Always loved this song too - kind of a hidden gem. My favorite part is towards the end of the song, always sounded to me like keith misses a note on the guitar but they left it in the song anyway

Listing to the songs since the 60's I always find it annoying but I get used to it .........I will miss it they remove it "dong" grinning smiley

Agreed! These two tracks, and especially "Fence" were very early favourites when I discovered the Stones around 92-93. I loved "Flowers" and another favourite there is Backstreet girl. These songs are on my top list and I love them dearly! The 60´s is my number one Stones era.

Pretty sure it's:

Trying to make up mind

I've always heard "really is too hard a bind".

Anyway, I am 61 and the lyrics resonate in an entirely different way than when I first heard them long ago. They truly were old souls.

Years ago I read - but do not remember where - that the picking "classical" guitar was Brian. From the sound of it, it could very well be true so that was my assumption. I first bought the record in '72 and this song has been a favorite since.
