Ry Cooder on Prodigal Son?
Posted by: Cafaro ()

Hello all,
Sorry if this has been addressed (to death). I read in Stones Gear that BW claims Ry Cooder played on the album version of Prodigal Son. I looked for the quote in his Blues Odyssey book but I couldn't find it (I didn't look that hard).

It's always been obvious to me that there are 2 (at least) guitar tracks on the BB cut but I never heard that Ry was the 2nd guitarist. I always thought it was KR at his 100% best and or some of the playing was sped up in the mix.

Thoughts?

I don´t think they had even met Ry when Prodigal Son was recorded.

I have heard speculation, and maybe seen a quote about Dave Mason on Dear Doctor, but I've never heard about Cooder being involved as early as this...

A lovely chaos of credits smiling smiley

It is Mason on mellotron, and not Cooder on mandolin on FG, though...

It is a mellotron, but no one involved has said who played the mellotron on that track, including Dave Mason.

Now, if I remember right: in that Beggars song-by-song interview with Richards from the late 80's or early 90's, didn't he state there that Nicky played the mandolin sound there? It's the same interview where he states that he played the slide on JSP.

Keith said Nicky suggested they should have violin/fiddle on the track.
