Astoundingly Bizarre Jagger 'Gimme Shelter' solo Tokyo '88 vid
Date: July 27, 2013 20:30

Well,
I've NEVER seen this before, Apologizes if it has been posted recently.
My jaw was on the floor by the end of it. In M.J.'s defense, it seemed like he couldn't hear a thing from the back (though he starts out at the soundboard.) The '88 Japan/Australia solo tour was definitely a low point for him it seems. Am hoping my posting this from an iPad goes up OK?

That's Callaghan and Arnold Dunn (Alan's brother) escorting Jagger through that mob.
What an assignment. Ha!

Jagger shouldn't even try Just Another Night solo...his experimental 'music' is outlawed in some third world countries from what I've read...

Mick would have been 'Shabu Shabu' if it weren't for Callaghan & Dunn. Umm, thinking I should edit that culinary reference... I was going to say 'Sushi,' but do know enough to culturally sensitive that 'Sushi' is raw fish, while 'Shabu-Shabu' generally refers to beef, LOL's.
What the f**k was Mick thinking pulling this one? I can only hope it was a one night only bit of insanity for the 'Laserdisc?' Though he looks (scarily to me) like he really got off on it.
Fluffiest hair of his life, methinks, aside from perhaps the 'One Hit (To the Body') video from '86.
His hair had calmed down considerably by the fall, as you can see in this 'Foxy Lady' cover from Australia. I had no idea that there was such a long break between the Japan tour in March and the Australasian tour in the fall. Trying to find a clear list of tour dates of that whole '88 solo tour, but am having little luck. Anyone care to share with the class?

Good point!

I hadn't seen that (or any of that solo tour, actually), and the only thing scarier than seeing him dive into that crowd was seeing him onstage singing that song with people who weren't the Stones . .

This is horrible beyond words! Thank God Jeff Beck had the good sense to bail out on this. Wonder where he got the band, Long Island or the Jersey shore? I think I'd rather have Keith sing this with the Stones. Evidence:

OK, but Mick gets to play harmonica. That was horrible.

Blimey.

I've seen some footage of that tour, but that video there might be the worst thing I've ever seen associated with the Stones, which is saying something.

Generally, Mick gives the impression of a good decision-maker, who is on the ball and who knows what he's doing. On occasion, though, he leaves you thinking: "what in all sanity could make anyone believe this is a good idea?" That video is one such moment. Ego run not just wild, but feral; horrendous clothes; incomprehensible hair; and, unusually for Jagger, awful singing (or 'vocalising'). He seems totally pissed or mega-coked, or both. We can only be grateful that, if Keith did see that at the time, he didn't throw his hands up and say "I've lost him, he's gone to the planet Up-His-Own-Arse never to return, I'm gonna have to do something else with the rest of my life".

Absolutely cringe-inducing.

Keith needed the Wino boost...maybe this helped...but it's clear who is the heart, soul, balls and mind of the Stones

That is absolutely appalling!!!! But it was 25 years ago and Mick trying to be relevant and looking foolish doing so.

Horrible yes. But there is nothing wrong with the musicians other than they are not The Rolling Stones. They are doing their job.

Keith's thing is different, but it's too sloppy so I don't like that as well.

Hmmmm....

The hair....
The outfits....
The ridicules camera angles...

God the 80s were crap!

This is even more embarrassing than The Who "Tommy" late 80s tour.

My first real rock concert experiences were just as the 80s were about to finish. At least I know I only missed what was going on the 70s and that the 80s were a good time to miss things.

It's sobering to think that had the Stones not regrouped in 1989, a quarter of a century later we'd be looking at this in utter bewilderment at the realisation that this is what Mick broke the Stones up to do.

I've quite a few videos and audios from this era but I dont think Ive listened to or watched them since the Stones returned in 1989. This reminds me why.

I saw the final show on this tour from Western Springs, Auckland, NZ. On Saturday 5th November 1988.

The gig in New Zealand was the only Outdoor Stadium Show of the tour, it was preceeded by a secret gig at the Gluepot Tavern in Ponsonby,on the 3rd of November by the Brothers of Sodom, only a few images exist from this secret gig that have been published

[natlib.govt.nz]

I actually have the book in question and the images aren't bad, heck I don't know anyone who was someone back in the days who didn't play the Gluepot, such a slice of Kiwi Rock History. Long gone now.

Never heard of that show, SKILLS, thanks for the info.

I notice that Zentgraf's site has a listing for it for 'early November' which I have to say I missed - maybe because the wording doesnt seem to provide any details.

What I do remember of those shows is that I thought the Aussie leg was better than the Japanese one. The Channel 9 'Deep Down Under' special has its moments.

I suppose you'd have to have balls to take that crap onstage in front of people...
