Thank you for all the fantastic and thrilling moments I've had the pleasure to experience. My favourite concept will always be the telescope bridge. Pure genius.

Mark Fisher's website was now updated:

Mark Fisher: 20th April 1947 - 25th June 2013

"STUFISH

We are sad to announce that the stage designer and architect Mark Fisher, OBE, MVO, RDI, died yesterday in London aged 66.

He passed away peacefully in his sleep at the Marie Curie Hospice in Hampstead with his wife Cristina at his side, after a long and difficult illness, which he suffered with stoicism and courage and his customary good humor.

Mark’s work as a set designer and artistic director has transformed the landscape of rock concerts and large scale events over the last 25 years.

Together with his practice Stufish, Mark created the groundbreaking designs for all the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, and U2 tours for two decades as well as scores of other artists all over the world.

As well as his work in live music performance he also created designs for theatre productions and musical theatre including We Will Rock You, and Ka and Viva Elvis for Cirque du Soleil.

He was the senior designer for the Beijing Olympics Opening and Closing Ceremonies and was one of the three executive producers at the London 2012 Games ceremonies.

His work influenced not only the colleagues and crews with whom he worked but also surprised and delighted the many millions of people who experienced his designs all over the world.

26th June 2013

I'm feeling a hole has been left in the crative world today.

Mark's vision of what a sterile stadium could become truly gave the world a new expectation of what wonders that could be erected within a few short days, transforming concrete monoliths, vast open spaces, or confined interiors into visual wonders of steel and light, projecting awe and spectacle on a scale never dreamed of less than a generaton ago.

My personal experience of walking into Western Springs Stadium, an open park like environment with a natural ampitheatre surrounding, and seeing the Voodoo Lounge Stage was jaw dropping, I could not believe what had been achieved since the late eighties from the original big scaffolds holding the sound rig up and giving the light trusses a resting place, too what I was seeing in April of 1995, since then all things have been judged via the prism that experience created.

When I go to a big Gig it has to live up to standard that Mark Fisher has set, thankfully a lot of them have beem Mark's creations, so it's been a real pleasure to see ACDC, U2, Floyd, Waters, Tina, Metallica, Elton, Muse, Robbie, Pink and Gaga.

I will think about these gigs with a greater fondness knowing that I witnessed not only great performces but performnces in a space that contributed immensely to the event.

R.I.P.

Additionally I found some early sketches that Mark did for the Steel Wheels Tour at this architectural design website.

Some of you may with an engineering background or a general curiousity about how things are built may find these interesting

Rest in peace, Mark.
I have been very impressed by his work, ever since I saw my first Stones show in 1995.

A creator nonpareil. May he rest in peace.

Statement from the Rolling Stones:

"We are all extremely saddened to hear of the death of our dear friend Mark Fisher. The remarkable sets he designed for us over the last two decades played a major part in the success of all those tours. His passion, dedication and professionalism was infectious."

"We all loved his dry sense of humour and unflappable demeanour… a quietly soft spoken genius… Mark will be sorely missed – not only by us… but by every single member of ours… and any crew he worked with. Our sincere condolences go to his wife and family."

This is definitely NOT O.T...
Mark Fisher was integral in bringing the Stones (& a lot of other bands) closer to their audiences. Very sad news.

RIP. He was great. For a long time when I was young he had my fantasy job. I used to dream for hours about setting up amazing staging and lighting.

It feels like we are starting to enter a "dying like flies" phase for 60s and 70s counterculture and pop culture icons. A bit depressing.

I remember a passage from a tour documentary (I think it was the 2002-03 tour?) where he and some workers had to repaint the stage floor since it was not to the liking of Mr Watts and Sir Michael.
Quite a humorous scene! He passed away far to early though.

Gosh, how sad, what a shock, he was way too young! RIP

Edit: I just read through the thread, I had no idea that he was involved with the Beijing Olympics Opening and Closing ceremonies as well as the London Olympics, what a great talent!
