I'm now listening to an unedited version of "Summer Romance", which was on Emotional Rescue. It's just a raveup. Some of you have slagged off this song, but I love it. I really love the bass lines on this one--at the end of the song it takes over the lead. However, I can't tell who's playing it-- Keith?

Energetic song from a very underrated album.

If this is Bill, it's one of the most adventurous lines he ever recorded for a studio song. It's ANGRY. Also, this is a continuation of the "punky" theme we saw on Some Girls. Just guitars, vocals, bass & drums. The final result was the 1981 classic single, "Start Me Up". This was a renaissance, a return to top 40 rock radio, now on FM stations in the 80s.

In retrospect, maybe Mathijs has a point in his belief that the band from 1978-81 was in another "golden age".

I hold another POV, which contributed to the band's decline into near oblivion by 1984, but that's for another thread.

To me, Emotional Rescue is a strange album with great highlights like SR and Down in the Hole, but also sad mistakes like Where the boys go.

Saw her on the subway, saw her on the D-train...

I like SR, Down In The Hole and, in fact, also Where The Boys Go.

Ive always loved Where The boys Go. I cant see why so many people seem to dislike it. I love the playing on it...especially the rhythm guitar and Charlie's drumming

Funny you mentioned that you hate the studio version of Let Me Go, but liked it live. Its the reverse for me. I think the studio version is really good (Mick's laid back vocal is excellent and the percussion is superb) but its just a noisy thrash when played live. As was "Shes so cold" on that tour.

Summer Romance is not a bad song, not my favorite. It has that punk rocker feel. About Where the Boys Go, I have given this song many chances but it might be my least favorite Stones song. A good friend of mine just made an MP3 disc of all the Stones albums from 68 to 81 and he was not familiar with IORR up to TY, so he listened to make sure he liked all the songs and this was the only song he left off the cd.

I have been slowly getting him into the Stones.

Just amazing how opinions among Stones fans vary. It's easily among my favorite 10 Stones songs. Always has; always will be. The tightness of the band, the cockney (is that it?) accent, and as Gazza stated, CW's spot-on drumming. Also - that guitar lead handoff from keith to ron is among the most spine-chilling ever recorded. And, the cheesey girls chorus at the end is to die for - what the hell is not to like?

I think it sounds like Ron's bass playing.

There are 4 very good outtakes of Summer Romance on that one. Far better than the original release. Esp. take II (when Mick screams 'Come on Keith!' just before Richards goes into his agressive solo. It Rocks!

I don't like Summer Romance and Where The Boys Go is even worse. Yep, it's funny how opinions vary. And talking about the ER album, I agree with Gazza about Let Me Go and She's So Cold: it's the same with these songs as with Miss You, to me there's no live version that is better than the studio originals.

I love Summer Romance. It's the Stones being the Stones...great song. I agree with Potted Shrimp abut the outtakes though. The guitars on a couple of them are incredibly tight. Some of Ron and Keith's best work

I think that Let Me Go (studio, with the bells) is one of my all time favorite Stones songs. I love the country feel of the guitar, Mick's "leave me the eff alone, I can't be bothered with you" vocal and the sax/bass/guitar bit at the end are great.

"Maybe I'll become a playboy, hang around in gay bars" could be one of Mick's funniest lines. In fact, Mick was pretty funny through out this whole disc.
Except Indian Girl which is great musically but a bust lyrically.

All in all an under-appreciated disc.The great thing about this site (and others) is that someone brings up a subject like this and then you go back listen to the song and realize how much you like it and sometimes hear stuff you haven't before.

I like the ER album overall. Sure, it's no masterpiece. But it certainly wasn't meant to be. Just a fun tongue-in-cheek Stones record. Fun, with the exception of the beautiful finale of All About You.

ER was one of the first albums I heard of the Stones(along with Voodoo Lounge), I just love it, with the exception of ER.
I remember my dad always played it in his car and one day we borrowed a cabriolet from a friend and cruised around listening to it really loud. I was 12 years old then...(1994) and I could sing along all the lyrics. Well, not really, I couldn't speak English so I just sang what I heard.

one thing that is quite jarring/noticeable about WTBG - it's played in a strange key (for the Stones) - I believe it's B-flat. Almost all of their rockers from that era are in A, E or D...so that may account for why this song doesn't grab some folks...

what is nice about summer romance is that you could mix that with when the whip comes down and clash city rockers and holiday in the sun or i wanna be sedated and they all fit nicely together... while 25 yrs ago the stones were scoffed at for trying to sound like the new groups of the time, it is their music that really sits well with the others...
i always liked ER for its' mixture of flavors, the funk/disco, slight reggae,
rockers, and countryish ballads...while it may be lyrically weak, come on the
lyrics for she's so cold are kind of goofy...it think that it shows a band that could still flex its' musical chops and play anything that came their way...

yep..definitely in my top ten. Cant understand the contempt so many people have about a fine Stones rocker.

just listening to it now! The bass-lines are bloody great too. I love EVERYTHING about this song. A perfect rocker with great tongue in cheek lyrics

I will listen to my fellow mates here and give it yet another listen but I can never come around to it. The girls chorus at the end usually makes me cringe, sort of the beginning of the horrible 80's production sound.

Well, I happen to like "Where The Boys Go", and I really think it's a tongue-in-cheek tribute (or parody) of David Bowie. Even when it first came out, I thought it could've been a Bowie song. There's definitely a sense of humo(u)r in it.

Maybe this is the payback for Bowie's knockoff of Mick in "Diamond Dogs".

Now that I think on it, too bad MJ didn't adopt a thick New York accent for this one--it also could've been a great parody of the NY Dolls, especially with the girls' chorus at the end. Now THAT would've been funny as hell.
