Diddley, Diddley, Diddley, Diddley Daddy…

I got a baby that's oh, so pretty
I found her right here in the windy city
Somebody kissed my baby last night
My pretty baby cried, she know it wasn’t right

Diddley, Diddley, Diddley, Diddley Daddy…

My pretty baby started to cry in vain
Said: Mick, honey child, you're a natural born man
I love you baby with all my heart
Please don't ever say we'll part

Diddley, Diddley, Diddley, Diddley Daddy…

Honey child, honey child, here’s I say
I wanna know if you do love me

Diddley, Diddley, Diddley, Diddley Daddy…

Produced by Glyn Johns

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “Grrr!” 5CD
(Abkco / Polydor / Universal 3712341) UK, November 9, 2012

Much as I like their Bo Diddley covers from the early years, I think it is kind of strange
to cover such a personal song.

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

Good version of an unspectacular song. But the band sound authentic right down to Mick's faux American accent and it was these kind of performances that set the Stones apart from all the other UK Chicago wannabe r'n'b bands like The Yardbirds and The Pretty Things.

The Stones went on to really perfect their Bo Diddley covers with Cops n Robbers at the BBC Camden Theatre in March 64 and then at the El Mocambo in 77 with Crackin' Up.

Quite forgettable. Here is a much better cover, joyous and swingin'...

This must be on a special version of the CD - definitely not on the one I have.

Not as great as the other IBC demos, but a good document of that time...

Me too! It *is* a huge box -- I still don't know how to store it vertically, it's too tall for any of my book shelves.

Yeah, I also got that one...it's a wonder Stones did it for Decca with this tape and not The Beatles with theirs....sheik of Araby and stuff that's much better....

Harvey Fuqua co-wrote this??? Groooooan. I used to do endless recording sessions with Harvey when he produced Sylvester and the Weather Girls. We would go until 3:00 a.m. in his Berkeley, CA studio, just he and I, working on musical ideas. Only 3-4 years earlier, as a young teen, I had bought the Stones' boot 'Bright Lights, Big City,' as well as Bo Diddley's greatest hits. I loved Diddley Daddy!

Harvey never minded talking about the old days; think of the stories he could have told about this tune. If I had known he co-wrote it, I certainly would have asked him a) about working with Bo D., and b) what he thought of the Rolling Stones' version. Likely he would never have heard the Stones' version (it being unreleased at the time), which meant I would certainly have taken it over to his place to play it for him and get his reaction.

Harvey passed on a few years ago. Opportunity lost. Wow.
