Special "Set" with Mick Taylor
Posted by: MJRocksoff ()

I think after hearing Keith on Fallon the other night that Mick Taylor will play on more then just Rambler. My guess is there will be a special "set" of his best work with the Stones on these shows. Three guitars are better then two!!

I can't even think about this... it's all just too much!!
This is gonna be the longest month and a half of my life.

My gut feeling is they'll choose the least appropriate songs for him to play on. They'll do CYHMK and TWFNO with Ron and bring Mick on for Shattered and I wanna be your man.

Actually that would be really fun... Taylor on Respectable, She's So Cold, You Got Me Rocking...

Gotta agree. The Stones must be keenly aware of the current lineup, or "contemporary lineup" being upstaged on their own stage...if they create a peak with Taylor then the rest of the show is filler...that's an ego cracker...

He should play the whole show. There's plenty of guitar parts including acoustic to go around. It would be fun, there are too many rules in the Rolling Stones, as Jerry Garcia once said to Hall and Oats, "This isn't the army".

It would be far less risky to include him throughout the show...

I think just to be contrary, Mick J. should say, "Our next song is about time. I think Mick T. will play some excellent stuff on this song about TIME. Whatdoyathink?" And then the Stones would launch into...Time Is On My Side. And the audience would have funny expressions on their faces.

Maybe that's why Bill only got two 'soft' numbers. If they'd rehearsed and played 'Miss You' or 'Black Limousine' with him the audience who'd have realized they'd been cheated all these years.

Watch out for telling the truth here, Munich. You'll either get called a socialist or somebody like sweetsicklife will call you other things. But I agree with you post; they are afraid of giving Taylor the spot he's able to fill; because of Ronnie and Keith, who has their titles but not their ability

Munich was called a socialist last week, for his opinion about Rolling Stones after 1981/82 by some wierdo. And no I'm no commie. But thanks for the concern, comrade

Their putting the Taylor thing out there in multiple media. I think he plays the whole gig.

Where do they put Ron then? On 3rd/pointless guitar?

Sure. Micks been playing it for years!
Ron can take a backseat for a nostalgia trip...he's had the best of the financially impressive touring years...

Amen, Brother! I would love to hear what MT does with Start Me Up or Miss You. Actually, it might be the only things that can make those songs interesting again.

They would't have given Taylor an 8 minute jam number, which always is among the highlights of the show if they were afraid. No commie here either, Erik - just an attempt on logical thinking winking smiley

Taylor should stay on for how long as he wants.

he has said that his favorite guitar is a strat. I believe "Time Waits..." is a strat on the album. If he played a Fender during those Ronnie songs it would groove. Still I love the way Taylor busted the Brian era, taking no prisoners and owning it.

Good to see people at IORR still think they know what Jagger is thinking. Sure, sure, you understand him- You're just like him.

The "contemporary lineup" is somehow afraid of how good they sound with Taylor? And that's why he will be playing either 3 songs or for the entire show?

That is the funniest thing I've heard in a long, long, while.

Taylor is lucky to be up there with them.

The way Keith spoke about having Mick for the shows in the interview certainly implied he'll be doing more than just a couple of songs.

I don't know though, I don't want to get my hopes up. Having three guitars, as Keith said, would mean that they could sound more like their studio counterparts by having more of the guitar parts reproduced. We'll soon find out I guess.

The trouble with MR and CYHMK is that they're long; -especially in a set that will most likely include SFTD, YCAGWYW and whichever song ends the night, as JJF and Satisfaction have done. I think that's great because Jagger gets a little break from singing, but a longer set really wears on Charlie, who never gets a rest.

That said, these three seem the most likely (besides MR):

**Heartbreaker: KR rhythm, Ronnie wah, MT lead
*Dead Flowers: KR acoustic and b. vox, Ronnie electric rhythm, MT lead (and this song was the fan choice for one of the 2012 shows, right?)
*CYHMK: KR backing rhythm during song and main rhythm during end jam, Ronnie intro nasty riffs, MT lead during end jam

Love In Vain: KR/Ronnie 1 electric, 1 acoustic rhythm, MT elec slide
ADTL: 3 electric guitar attack

Perhaps Angie, GS, Sympathy, etc., but there's just not that much time for them to rehearse stuff like TWFNO, Winter, Sway, etc. Maybe have him come back out for some acoustic rhythm backup on Satisfaction like Blondie dude used to do or another lead at the very end. I don't see them letting him play on any post-1975 or non-blues tunes though.

I agree that once he leaves the stage, the only killer soloist left is going to be Bobby Keys. Plus they tend to throw the slow numbers early in the show (except YCAGWYW) and will probably have MT on lead only after mid-show (the Keef tunes), so Winter, Angie and TWFNO seem unlikely. If this all works out and they decide on future mini-tours, maybe they'll expand his time slot and have the band learn tunes to accommodate that.
