BREAKING: Andy Johns, Led Zeppelin and Rolling Stones Engineer and Producer Dies
by PAUL CASHMERE on APRIL 8, 2013
Producer/engineer Andy Johns, who worked on classic albums like Led Zeppelin IV and the Rolling Stones ‘Exile On Main Street’, has died.

Johns came from a family of sound engineers. His older brother is Glyn Johns (The Who, Eagles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin) and his nephew is Ethan Johns (Ryan Adams, Kings of Leon, Kaiser Chiefs, Rufus Wainwright).

Andy Johns began his career as a tape operator in Olympic Studios in London working with Rod Stewart, Jethro Tull and Humble Pie.

Johns worked with the Rolling Stones from 1968-1973 and captured the sounds for ‘Exile On Main Street’ from Keith Richards’ mansion in the South of France in the early 70s.

He then moved to Los Angeles and worked with Ozzy Osbourne, Joe Satriani and Van Halen.

Recent works include ‘Let Your Hair Down’ for Steve Miller Band in 2011 and the Chickenfoot album of 2009.

Noise11 will update this story as more details come to hand

I am very surprised. I haven't really followed his contemporary life. What a brilliant ear and touch. The Stones really knew how to surround themselves with very talented people. It inspired them, and Johns was part of some of the most important work The Stones did. RIP Andy!

Big loss. I remember when he helped out with Van Halen, Alex was happy because he wanted to get that heavy Zeppelin drum sound. The @#$%& album is their heaviest sounding.
