Mona (I Need You Baby)
(Ellas McDaniel)

Regent Sound Studios, London, UK, January 3, 1964

Mick Jagger - vocals, maracas
Keith Richards - electric guitar
Charlie Watts - drums
Bill Wyman - bass
Brian Jones - electric guitar, tambourine

I say: Hey Mona, oh Mona
I say: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yes Mona, oh Mona

I tell you, Mona, what I wanna do
I'll build a house next door to you
Can I see you sometimes?
We can blow kisses through the blinds
Yeah, come out, come out on the front
And listen to my heart go bumpety bump
I need you baby that's no lie
Without your love I'd surely die

I say: Hey, hey Mona, oh Mona
I say: Yes, yeah, yeah, yes Mona, oh Mona

I say: Hey, hey Mona, oh Mona
I say: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yes Mona, oh Mona

I tell you, Mona, what I wanna do
I'm gonna build a house next door to you
Can I see you sometime?
We can go kissin' through the blinds
Yeah, come out, come out on the front
And listen to my heart go bumpety bump
Need you baby that's no lie
Without your love I'd surely die

I say: Hey, hey Mona, oh Mona
I say: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yes Mona, oh Mona

Produced by Andrew Loog Oldham

Absolutely brilliant track, that rhythm hasn´t yet been bettered!

I´d say it´s lead guitar by Brian - at the very least you can call it the main guitar...

I tell you, Mona, what I want to do
I'll (I'm going to) build a house next door to you

Need you, baby, that's no lie

I've never heard anybody, before or since, get that Bo Diddley thing down. Diddley himself was astounded, saying that Brian was the only cat he knew who'd worked out the secret of it.

If I remember correctly Bill wrote about this song in "Stone Alone" something like,
"Brian showed his kraftmanship on guitar with his brilliant solo on Mona". I paraphrase
by heart, and have to find the darn book to check if I'm correct.
But it sure is some fine piece of work.

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

Brilliant! I apriciate it much more today than I did 1964...then it was just a 'Not fade away' -attempt no 2 on Rolling Stones No2....

2 1 2 0

That's right.

From the horse's mouth, Bo Diddley: "The only guitarist who got my rhythm guitar parts right was - apart from Peggy Lee Jones - Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones"!

Quite possibly the first time a lot of UK kids would have been exposed to Bo Diddley.

One question though - what the hell is kissing through the blinds?

Yikes man, those blinds look kinda dangerous to me. It might be alright for Mick but if I tried putting my kisser through those I'd sure as hell come out with cuts and bruises.

I've seen that line written as "we can blow kisses through the blinds" which makes a little bit more sense - butI'm not sure that's what Mick sings!

i could be implied that the singer has a tooth ache, too - but if he does - he's gotta let us know for crissakes....

Hmmm. At first I thought why, Brian, 100% of the song, is long dead. Then I remembered Ronnie actually toured with Bo Diddley, and that Ronnie rocked 'Who Do You Love' on the PPV, while the others seemed a little lost.

A song from the early years that remains one of their very best. One of my favorite vocal deliveries from Mick. Did they play this in 81 ?

They did - but not half as well as they did in the 60s.

I actually like the BBC sessions live version better than the studio version! I recall a Rolling Stone interview with Keith back in 81 where they asked if he still thinks of Brian. He said whenever they play Time Is On My Side or when he plays Brian's licks from Mona.
