Another one too soon gone, Joe had some hits that I enjoyed back in the sixties you may remember, "Games People Play", "Walk a Mile in my Shoes", "Hush", "Don't it Make you Wanna go Home".
He was also a session guitarist for Dylan's "Blonde on Blonde" and Simon and Garfunkel "Sounds of Silence".

RIP: Mr Joe South

Games People Play helped light up the summer of 69. Great song. RIP Joe. He made a fine psych album called Introspection too.

As a Midwestern, and Southern kid, Don't It Make You Want to Go Home always got to me:

Owned a more obscure LP of his called "Midnight Rainbows" with a great track called "Home and Homesick". Powerful stuff.

A man ain't a man till he stands up for what he believes....

Also heard Marshall Crenshaw dedicate part of his radio show to him a few months ago. Interesting, offbeat guy and musician.

I lived in Atlanta in the early 70s and knew a girl in school who claimed to be seeing him. I got the impression there were some problems, that he might have been unhappy. Now that I see his brother Tommy (his drummer) committed suicide in '71 it's easier to understand. Another couple buddies used to drink coffee with Joe South late at night at the old Dunk N' Dine restaurant on Roswell Road near Chastain Park. Atlanta was quite the place then, with Duane and the rest of the Allman Brothers playing live at Piedmont Park, or at Fulton County Stadium. Joe South, and even Tommy Roe lived in town. Don't It Make You Want To Go Home?

Didn't realize he wrote some of those other songs. Only knew he wrote one of my favorite Deep Purple songs, HUSH!!
