I emphasise with Nicos and his video story. I find the fact that all your 'friends' automatically get to see the apps you've viewed or read. I find it a little unsettling, personally. I understand you can make your account as restrictive as you wish, but honestly, I don't think it's straightforward. Did you know that you can now even divide your friends into categories and tailor what each individual can view on your page, you can label them 'friends','acquaintences' etc. it's an odd concept.

The Facebook app tracks EVERY web site you visit.

It also automatically posts on Facebook your activity for some of them - Spotify for instance.

Yeah.. I'm sure you can turn all that off.. but how many people know how?

Well NICOS' story was a special case because he just didn't watch a random video...he was tricked into watching a spam/virus post. You're on FB, you see a link for a video--usually something very sexual or conveniently sexually misleading---you click on it, you realize it's not what it was set out to be, you close out of it but the next thing you know: it's posted on your wall that you viewed the video. It's all a ploy to watch that video and increase their view counts for whatever that they're selling.

This doesn't happen with every video you watch on FB...just these specific virus/spam videos.

Not surprising that Facebook was created by one of those slick Ivy-leaguers...

Just in case people think I'm being paranoid.

Facebook are very naughty people.

The solution:

"The only solution is to delete every Facebook cookie in your browser, or to use a separate browser for Facebook interactions."

For the record... my earlier post about hearing about NICOS watching this video I was kidding.. I am not on FB. I didnt see or hear anything and I didnt realize it was a very sexual, virus infected, spammed video.... if I had, I wouldnt have said anything.

Damn you Facebook!!... DAMN YOU!!

Only if you want it to.

Once and for all: You CAN and MUST adjust your settings before you add friends, post or do anything on Facebook.

AND with a couple of mouseclicks you can avoid social media-connecting with YouTube, Google, Spotify and other media.

Yeah.. but a lot of people are bewildered by "settings".

I would say most people who use the internet are not that computer savy.

The default should be NONE of this crap is switched on to begin with.

Switching on should be a user request.

No it's not. It's an expression of racism. We all know how extremely bad and dangerous racism of whatever kind is.

There is at least one person today wishing he had never gone on facebook. [wtvr.com] CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) – A Chesterfield County man, and former Marine, was taken away in handcuffs without charges, and is being held for medical evaluation after questionable Facebook posts. Brandon Raub, 26, was led away from his house in handcuffs around 7:30 p.m. Thursday night.
==============================

Ever since I heard of FB starting I have been hearing stories about people getting in trouble because of their posts to FB, in a variety of ways.... from school kids getting suspended from school for posting pictures that got them in trouble..... to office managers getting in hot water for nasty words they posted... to ex marines spouting off that they are pissed off about 9/11 and the state of America... and now there are reports that prospective employers are demanding facebook (and twitter etc) account names and passwords in the interview process.

I dont know about anyone else but ever since I heard about that Nixon guy getting into trouble for recording himself, I swore I would never record or report on myself... so when Facebook started being used so widely I was stunned to hear (still hearing) how many people happily tell all about themselves and so much more ... from bitching about bosses (and getting fired for it) to talking about going on vacation(and getting thier house robbed while they were away). Of course people will advise everyone to be very careful what you say on Facebook, or to adjust your settings... but I advise... just dont go there, dont say anything and it will impossible for it to come back later and bite you in the ass.

And beware, because what seems fine (to everyone) to say (and feel) today might be considered waaaaaaay differently in 10... or 20... or 30 years... and if/when you post IT to facebook IT is there forever. Facebook owns everything you post... every word, every picture, THEY OWN IT ...read the fine print. It is all on your permanent record... and you willingly put it there, for free.

Times change and so does what is considered socially acceptable. Consider how many times Mark Twain used the term "ni gg er" in his book Huckleberry Finn or Tom Sawyer.... it was a fine word to use back then, it is NOT an acceptable word to use today. [www.guardian.co.uk]

Well, now you're talking and it makes sense too.

It's simple. If people become offended by a word, don't use it - no matter how common that word was in the past.

yes but this poster still didn't edit his post, and one of the reasons, I think - because only a few have expressed outrage. Hence, we can assume the rest is more or less agree with his statement- so why should he do anything about it

I certainly don't agree with the statement, especially since I have Jewish family. You are right proudmary, we should all speak out against racism whenever we are confronted with it. I suppose I am guilty of a certain amount of weariness with remarks like the poster expressed. I attribute it to ignorance, stupidity, and low self-esteem. Sometimes it's easier just to ignore morons, but thank you for reminding us that we shouldn't let things like this pass.

If you have Firefox, get the add-ons Facebook Blocker, which disables auto-submitting your data to the websites you visit, and Facebook Disconnect, which stops Facebook tracking the websites you visit. Also Facebook Purity, which gets rid of ads, spam, the Timeline, apps, and anything else you'd rather not see there.

Facebook court ruling: What you share on Facebook is admissible as evidence
By Tecca | Today in Tech – Thu, Aug 16, 2012

If you're posting status updates about your crimes, the cops can indeed come knocking

Did you know that what you say on Facebook can be used against you in a court of law? If you're sharing something with your friends, you may as well be sharing directly with the judge and jury: A recent ruling in a U.S. federal court says that if you post something on Facebook, your friend can share that information with the police — it's not a violation of your privacy.

Accused gang member Melvin Colon had argued in court that investigators violated his constitutional right to privacy when they viewed his Facebook profile via one of his friends' accounts. But US District Judge William Pauley III ruled that Colon's messaged threats and posts about violent acts he committed were not private, and indeed fair game for prosecutors. To some extent, the ruling makes logical sense: When you say something publicly on Facebook, you're often sharing a thought with hundreds, maybe even thousands of people. There's not much that's private about that.

Courts have settled a number of questions pertaining to Facebook and our legal system this year. Courts have ruled that it is improper to deliver a court summons via Facebook, even when it's the best method of reaching someone. A court has also ruled that a Like on Facebook isn't constitutionally protected free speech — something Facebook is vigorously appealing.

Facebook is a tool for communication in today's internet world, like any other, including this site. If you think it's the only source of private information that can be found about you on the internet, then you are mistaken. As several of us have said on this thread, you need to be careful with your settings and circumspect about what you post on facebook. This way of communication is not going away, it will only increase. People need to know how to use them appropriately and protect their identity as much as they can.
