I can live without Vegas'70s. Perhaps, reputation-wise, he should have done a James Dean. This is how I prefer to remember him.

I saw Elvis in concert, 1976. Yes he was drugged out, even had to read the words to some songs from a lyric sheet. But hey, he was Elvis and he was awesome.
The screams every time he would shake or do a move, the ladies fainting. Yes no one like him.

Lucky you. Whereabouts did you see him? There were still some very good shows that year.

I'd better take that back

I saw Elvis in 1971 at the Sahara (Lake) Tahoe. The only thing disappointing about the show was the (short) length of the show. Elvis was on stage for about 50 minutes. Free record albums and teddy bears were under everyone's seat.

VERY cool! Didn't know you saw him in '71...that was a great time to see him.

Always bewilders me that so many people in this day and age still harbour the impression that a) Elvis pretty much played nowhere but casinos in Nevada in the 70s and b) he was barely fit to perform for most of the decade.
The fact is that - even aside from the Vegas/Tahoe residencies - he spent more time on the road than most bands did. Including the Stones. And for much of that period he was still a superb live act. He was certainly less 'drugged out' for that decade than Keith was!
In 1976 alone he performed 128 tour shows (just 29 shows in Vegas/Tahoe)
In the first half of his final year, 1977, he played 55 tour shows up to late June.

The Stones, by contrast, played just 260 shows in the entire decade that cemented their reputation as a live act more than any other.

Tommorrow I am going to drive from Louisiana to Ohio. This thread has inspired me to stop in Tupelo, Mississippi and see Elvis' birthplace and childhood home. I will also take time to stop in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. I've never been to either location. I am tempted to return to Clarksdale, Mississippi. A bit off topic, but I am interested to see what I can of Elvis' history while I live in this part of the country.

Lets not forget the Elvis-Stones connection: it was Bobby Keys who played sax on Elvis' 'Return To Sender'
BTW, I saw him twice; in '75 and '76. He may have been grossly overweight, but he still had THE VOICE!!.

Cook....there is an incredibly outstanding sax on a real old song called "Reconsider Baby" aka "So Long" .... Wondering if it Bobby Keys on it if you knew...the whole song is incredibly bluesy, not like Elvis' later recordings.

I left Fort Polk, Louisiana yesterday around 1 pm and stopped in Natchez, Mississippi for an early dinner. I actually stopped firs in Ferriday, La, but their Delta Music museum was closed when I got there. Natchez is a town I've driven through a few times but I've never taken the time to drive through the historic downtown. If you're in the area, I recommend a visit. All of the Civil War history and architecture are on display in a small town setting. Both Ferriday and Natchez are famous for juke joints as well as the home of Jerry Lee Lewis and others. The Pig Out Inn in Natchez has great BBQ as well. As a former Spanish teacher and an avid history buff, I would've loved to have spent more time in Natchez, but I still had about 800 miles to drive. The next stop was Rolling Fork, home of Muddy Waters, right on Highway 61. There isn't much to see there. It is a tiny farming community with no mention of Waters. A website I recently read said that the "home of muddy waters" sign is frequently stolen and must be frequently replaced.
I always enjoy driving into a large city and hearing great Stones tunes on the radio. But last night, after I refueled in Rolling Fork and put in Sticky Fingers, I have to say there was nothing like hearing CYHMK in the middle of absolutely nowhere.
As I have been to Clarksdale before, I decided to pass through to Oxford and see the small southern town, home of Faulkner and Ole Miss. I was really impressed to say the least. It is a town that, along with Clarksdale, will require a longer visit on my return trip. Gladly, I'm about 5 hours from my destination in Ohio, thankful to be able to visit family and friends while off from the Army for about 2 weeks.
More to come, including Tupelo.
I will do my best Max'sKC...I always take the back roads in search of Americana and other lost worlds...
