I believe this thread is an exact representation of how the general public views Elvis Presley: the importance of his music completely buried under fat-Elvis, "Elvis is still alive"/"I saw Elvis at Burger King," and food/hamburger jokes. Kinda sad, really.
That is very pessimistic of you.

Perhaps. But if this thread on a music board, filled with music-minded people can put together 4 whole pages of mostly fluff at the mere mention of Elvis Presley (on the date of his passing), I would think it would be a clear indication to how the outside world views Elvis Presley.

Definitely a scorcher, Munichilton. Thanks for trying to keep the thread on track. I know you're one of longtime Elvis fans like me...still not as much Elvis fans on this board as there were in years passed...

Hang on, we're getting to the music. We're now discussing Elvis' session musicians. And btw, I wouldn't call comfort food fluff--it's an important part of life. Here J, you could use a bit of cheering up, sing along now, there's a good fellow --

I didnt go look, but I bet in years past it (the annual IORR Elvis thread) may have had a more serious (reverent) tone... where as this year it headed to the kitchen.... maybe.... ah I dont know... but... on the third hand... I would never say, to anyone, that IORR is a good cross section of what the outside world thinks... everyone here is kind of crazy... too much exposure to The Rolling Stones can do that (its in the fine print)

Well I wasn't particularly looking for a "reverent tone" in this particular thread but I did notice that this thread was lacking more focus on the music. We've had a few great Elvis threads in the past (albeit a long, long time ago) that focused on issues that people on a MUSIC forum should've been discussing so I only assumed that this thread would see more of that discussion.

Not the general public. Just a few who look for the bad. Some here don;t like the Elvis adulation so they find his faults fun to point out from behind a keyboard
As a lifelong Elvis fan I've learned to have fun with it much like E probably would have. I love him and wish someone took better care of him so he could still be wowing us like Tony Bennet but that was not to be.

Yeah...I find it ironic that people continue to perpetuate the very image of Elvis that they claim to hate by making the same jokes and repeating the same stereotypes over and over again. It's no big deal and I'm not losing any sleep over it but I was just simply expecting a little more from this thread on this board.

There's nothing wrong with talking about Elvis and food, plenty of websites and books are devoted to it--down-home cooking and all. I've never been a huge fan of Elvis, but I'd be happy to talk about the music as well.

I always liked the bass lines in Suspicious Minds--wasn't that a song Elvis actually wrote or co-wrote? That's Marc Benno on bass, right? I know that because he played bass on the Doors' album LA Woman, and it was mentioned that he played bass for Elvis.

Big, fat juicy bass lines--the kind that make you think of cheeseburgers...

Not really...Mark James wrote "Suspicious Minds" all by himself, and it was Mike Leech on bass on the original studio recording. Jerry Scheff was Elvis' regular bass player on the road for live shows and it was Jerry Scheff who played bass on The Doors' "LA Woman."

Nice work....

No not on any Elvis boards at the moment. The few I found have more blowhards than this place. I have read every book I can find by the memphis mafia and band members. I have seen every good and every awful movie. I have every note I can find that he's recorded [hundreds of boots]. I love the stories and the timelines...and I haven't scratched the surface of who this man was. But on those boards EVERYONE's an expert and knows everything there is to know...I prefer to just enjoy what the man left for us...

Woops, got the name wrong. Benno was the rhythm guitar player. Yeah, Scheff, he was quite talented. Manzarek made him play A-E lines on Riders On The Storm--but the keyboard version A to E, which was like playing as a contortionist on the bass, but he pulled it off. Who plays bass on Kentucky Rain? That's another good bass track. To me, that was Elvis' last truly great single. Never cared for Hunk Of Burnin' Love, although that was a big hit a couple of years later. Wasn't there ever a song that he wrote? In the TV bio-doc, the one that starred Dirt Russell, I think, they made it seem like Elvis wrote Suspicious Minds...

Are you also saying you don't prefer any of the '69 American Studio sessions that gave us "From Elvis In Memphs"? Such an exclusion is really unusual!

The studio output becomes murkier once you pass the end of the 60's and get into the 70's. I would give a few of them a chance since he still had a few great albums after the classics: "That's The Way It Is" and "Elvis Country" to name two.

Agreed. If you just bypass the 1970's Elvis because you think you know something, you are just ignorant...

haha well I dunno. That may have been the case with the EP boards a few years ago but a board like "For Elvis CD Collectors Only" has become waaay more paletable than this place in recent years so I think you'd enjoy it there now. But anyway, I get your point about enjoying what you have and leaving it like that.

Lennon said it best: 'Before Elvis, there was nothing'

Please, let's, dont now bang-on about the blues artists of the 1930s and 40s. Lennon was refereeing to the whole package: the music, it's popularity and the era-defying impact it had on teenagers across the U.S., U.K. and Europe.

No matter how many times I hear this song, it still sends chills down the spine, kind of like hearing that opening riff of Johnny B Goode. Its even more poignant when you hear it played within the confines of Sun and realize your standing right where one of THE most important songs in Rock N Roll and pop culture was recorded.
