That is very pessimistic of you.Quote

I believe this thread is an exact representation of how the general public views Elvis Presley: the importance of his music completely buried under fat-Elvis, "Elvis is still alive"/"I saw Elvis at Burger King," and food/hamburger jokes. Kinda sad, really.

Perhaps. But if this thread on a music board, filled with music-minded people can put together 4 whole pages of mostly fluff at the mere mention of Elvis Presley (on the date of his passing), I would think it would be a clear indication to how the outside world views Elvis Presley.

Definitely a scorcher, Munichilton. Thanks for trying to keep the thread on track. I know you're one of longtime Elvis fans like me...still not as much Elvis fans on this board as there were in years passed...
I didnt go look, but I bet in years past it (the annual IORR Elvis thread) may have had a more serious (reverent) tone... where as this year it headed to the kitchen.... maybe.... ah I dont know... but... on the third hand... I would never say, to anyone, that IORR is a good cross section of what the outside world thinks... everyone here is kind of crazy... too much exposure to The Rolling Stones can do that (its in the fine print)Quote

Not the general public. Just a few who look for the bad. Some here don;t like the Elvis adulation so they find his faults fun to point out from behind a keyboard
As a lifelong Elvis fan I've learned to have fun with it much like E probably would have. I love him and wish someone took better care of him so he could still be wowing us like Tony Bennet but that was not to be.

Yeah...I find it ironic that people continue to perpetuate the very image of Elvis that they claim to hate by making the same jokes and repeating the same stereotypes over and over again. It's no big deal and I'm not losing any sleep over it but I was just simply expecting a little more from this thread on this board.

I always liked the bass lines in Suspicious Minds--wasn't that a song Elvis actually wrote or co-wrote? That's Marc Benno on bass, right? I know that because he played bass on the Doors' album LA Woman, and it was mentioned that he played bass for Elvis.

Not really...Mark James wrote "Suspicious Minds" all by himself, and it was Mike Leech on bass on the original studio recording. Jerry Scheff was Elvis' regular bass player on the road for live shows and it was Jerry Scheff who played bass on The Doors' "LA Woman."

Are you also saying you don't prefer any of the '69 American Studio sessions that gave us "From Elvis In Memphs"? Such an exclusion is really unusual!
The studio output becomes murkier once you pass the end of the 60's and get into the 70's. I would give a few of them a chance since he still had a few great albums after the classics: "That's The Way It Is" and "Elvis Country" to name two.

No matter how many times I hear this song, it still sends chills down the spine, kind of like hearing that opening riff of Johnny B Goode. Its even more poignant when you hear it played within the confines of Sun and realize your standing right where one of THE most important songs in Rock N Roll and pop culture was recorded.
