Time for a new cheap Greatest Hits set? (50 Licks out in November)
Posted by: georgelicks ()
Date: August 15, 2012 05:18

Amazingly, we're in the 50th anniversary year and it seems that all the Stones' compilations on the market are out of print at the moment: during the last months (except for Exile and Some Girls, the last 3-4 years actually) no Stones' album made the Soundscan CATALOG Top 200 chart when the average sales for the #200 is 700-800 copies.

During the 50th anniversay week (a month ago) the best selling Stones' album in the U.S. was Hot Rocks with less than 500 copies.

About Hot Rocks, it's very expensive for today's market, Amazon is selling albums at 3-4 dollars.

Right now, the best selling Stones' album in Amazon is Hot Rocks (Price: $18.96) at #1042, in Itunes no Stones album is charting in their Top 1000.

We can say the same about every European market too.

The Stones are missing a whole new generation of pontential buyers with this lack of stock and the few things available are very expensive.

Strange situation for a band celebrating their 50th anniversary...

Yup, strange it is(seems).

It will be interesting some day to read what they were thinking/pondering during this period. It is always interesting to hear/read these types "tell all" after a couple years go by.

For a band that's all about the money, it's funny, innit? That what there is out that is a hit compilation falls among Jump Back, Hot Rocks, More Hot Rocks and Big Hits 1 and 2, at least in the United States.

Like Keith said about Forty Licks (not verbatim), why bother? Why would anyone want to buy the same songs again? At least that showed he had some idea of what is out there. At least, that's pretty much what he said in some guitar magazine inerview. I don't recall what he said about the new tracks.

Maybe at this point he still has the same feelings. And he may be on to something: after all these years with so many albums and so many compilations who gives a damn?

.....ANOTHER 'hits' comp.??......just what the world needs.....i believe that genre has been quite sufficiently covered thank you very much....if a member of this 'whole new generation' can't locate Rolling Stones music in todays world of incredible technology then they probably are unable to properly dress themselves also....no need to re-re-re-re-re-rerelease the old stuff again because some idiot in Hackensack NJ can't find 'start me up' on the internet.......no, how about a new LP of BRAND NEW RECORDINGS to introduce them to a new audience, instead of coming off like a pathetic "oldies" act......

For what? The money?

Actually it is quite a good marketing ploy. Take stuff in their catalog off the market. Build demand. Repackage it, and then re-release it. Bowie has been doing it for years with a lot of success, and now McCartney as well. Granted both Bowie and McCartney sweeten the offer with unreleased material, lavish box sets, and upgraded sound.

I think that there two options, not mutually exclusive.

Reissue the Cds (again) with bonus tracks and a new compilation.

Issue a low budget comp. Supermarkets often sell cheap comps by the biggest names which are mixtures of some of their biggest hits plus some more obscure tracks (there's a good new Who comp selling at £3). Lately supermarkets have also started selling proper hits collections (Faces Good Boys... is one) for the same price. They could reissue one of their comps at this price.

Obviously we'd prefer new stuff or more previously unreleased tracks but this keeps the Stones in the casual punters memory.

A greatest outtakes set would be better!

There'll be another career spanning compilation released by UMG in the next few months. I thought that was common knowledge?

Nobody's buying cds anymore. Release the stonesarchive-recordings on vinyl!

That'd be a nice gesture to the fans, imo.

50 songs - can they squeeze that onto 2 CD:s? Or will it have to be a 3-CD?

That already happened with the EMI to UMe switch. Hardly anyone noticed and has yet to notice.

I know people that buy CDs. I buy CDs. I will continue to buy CDs. I've bought two downloads in the last three years and have gotten 3 for free (legally). I wound up getting all the songs on CD eventually, which I am glad about because the quality is a thousand times better.

I think they need to release a mash-up CD.

With Eno as producer.

I think people stopped believing. Besides, with Jump Back to fill in the gap after Hot Rocks etc nobody cares. As nice as Forty Licks was it was mired by four tepid songs. Hopefully that never happens again - and that those songs aren't reissued.

Where she's at. She moves a lot though so you'll probably never find her.
