Is Anyone Getting Into Classical Music? (Not OT)
Posted by: Cocaine Eyes ()
Date: August 11, 2012 00:07

A few years ago, I learned that Keith always listens to Vivaldi first thing in the morning to begin his day. Since then, I've gotten seriously into listening to the classical stuff.....Chopin, Bach, Mozart, Vivaldi, all the classical musicians. They are a wonderful part of my music collection.

Anyone else enjoying the classics?

(OK, now I'm prepared for the humiliation and sneers. Bring it on as I chill out to Vivaldi's Four Seasons! Or Delibe's Lakme.)

I like a little classical piano once-in-a-while, but not so much the big orchestra stuff.

I have loved classical music since hearing some fast moving classical jammers as a kid... I am far from an expert about it, but I know what I like... and I think some of it is almost rock and rollish in the way it jams... and I sure as heck would rather hear jamming classical music anyday over some other types of.....

Not classical, but my tastes have leaned hard toward Jazz in the last few years. Like classical it's an unending treasure trove to dig into.

After many years away, I am getting back into classical music. Took piano lessons forever and my teachers would never let me play anything but classical, so I got turned off it for a long time. Now I am even revisiting Bela Bartok, very difficult to play and not always easy on the ears -a lot of dissonance there and you really have to pound the keys. For a pianist, it makes you want to tear your hair out. Now I can appreciate the complexity and it has a real jazz feel to it. Check out some of his piano concertos. If you like jazz TeaAtThree, I think you'll like Bartok.

Piano Concerto No. 1

I've been a classical buff as long as a Stones tragic - Vaughan-Williams, Bruckner, Mahler are faves as well as most of the standard repertoire

This is in my top 10 all-time greatest - desert island must haves

Been listening to and loving classical (and all) music since I was a kid. There is so uch great stuff out there I'm not sure where I should begin. Vivaldi was incredibly prolific and The Four Seasons, though his best known work, is just the tip of the iceberg. Keep digging and listeng! The worm has turned!

Depends what you define as Classical Music.

I like some modern composers, i.e. Philip Glass and Michael Nyman; Nyman did branch over into rock by making an album with David McAlmont, and he has said that Jerry Lee Lewis was a great influence on him. He also did an amazing soundtrack album with Damon Albarn for "Ravenous", a film directed by Antonia Bird, and based on the Wendigo myth of cannibalism.

I also have many cds of the Kronos Quartet, and find that they are excellent whether performing Glass, Riley, Barber, Hendrix, and Waits. Yes, the Kronos Quartet have backed Tom Waits.

Furthermore, I like early music such as Thomas Talis and William Byrd. Byrd's Western Mass is absolutely amazing. I also enjoy Monteverdi's Vespers. Plainsong and choral music are also listened to, as I do enjoy Officium and Memosyne by Jan Garbarek & The Hilliard Ensemble.

Additionally, I enjoy Vivaldi, Bach, Mozart especially the Magic Flute, Handel's Messiah, Holst's Planet Suite, and Mahler's Fifth.

no serious music lover fails to include ample doses of classical music into his auditory diet. failure to do so may result in serious culture-deficit consequences. if your deficit lasts over 4 months, start listening to some classical music at least once daily. conditions should improve within a week.

every day should start with something in the classical realm...i go for baroque, usually.

next to my beloved jazz, classical gets the most airplay at Chez ST....

I can understand how Keith would find Vivaldi's works to be soothing. A good way to balance after a kick a$$ day of touring.

And BTW, I love the Ink Spots!

Last one, I don't know how I could have forgotten it. Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, definitely on my desert island list. First song I ever listened to that made me realize music could be so beautiful it can make you cry.

Getting into it? I was into it before I met the Stones and I don't think I've ever been out of it

Glad to see someone else likes Bartok. I first encountered Bartok's piano music at a concert I'd gone to to hear something else - and it didn't take long to think "this stuff rocks!" The only trouble with classical performances is that you aren't usually allowed to translate your enjoyment into movement - no dancing or even tapping your hand or foot in time.
