This ABB song is Concert-Ready

I am talking about Driving Too Fast. Keith riffs the heck out of this one, and Ronnie is great on slide guitar. Turn it up very loud for the best effect.

I would much rather hear this tune than the usual war horses, such as Brown Sugar, Jumping Jack Flash, or Start Me Up. It would be a real crowd pleaser.

but the viola solo kinda ruins it....

This song sucks...Mindless/generic trash that would feel at home on a Bon Jovi record not an album by the mighty Rolling Stones.

I couldn't understand they they felt the need to put this on a fairly solid album that already had a few too many songs on it?

Driving Too Fast shouldn't have been album-ready IMO.

I dread to think what the out-takes are like!

Agree totally with the first line of James Kirk's post.

It's a nice rocker. Sort of at a Dance Little Sister level. Nothing great, but harmless fun.

In fact, the first time I heard this was on the radio, and I didn't pick up who it was right off. And I stopped what I was doing and thought. "What a great rock and roll rhythm section! WHO IS THIS?!" And after a moment I realized it was Mick singing and this was obviously off the new Stones album.

It was a great moment because I fell in love with this group—not realizing who it was—before I realized I'd already been in love with the group for years.

Fairly good rocker but with weak, instantly forgettable lyrics pulling it down to mediocre/duff.........................

I met a woman and she told me...."well baby...... well the blues ain't bad"...........

Too bad we can't actually get the Stones 'concert ready'.

...having said that, if they actually ever get concert ready, I pray they don't play this one.

It starts out good, but gets boring after a while, imo. Mick is playing exactly on the beat, and the magic is gone.

"Driving Too Fast" and "She Saw Me Coming" would both be concert-ready if they rehearsed thems some more. Not having another verse is the big missed opportunity of "Driving Too Fast".

They rehearsed SSMC on the BB-tour. Too bad they didn't play it.

I love this song. I think it's their best rocker in years and one of the best on ABB. It never ceases to amaze me how different fans' tastes are. I, for one, think Under the Radar is deplorable, and am glad that it didn't make it onto the album. I will never understand the fascination with that song. We Don't Wanna Go Home, on the other hand, I think is great and could have easily taken place of Sweet Neocon.

The Stones are still very very good at crafting great music. What they have not been too strong at for about 20 years now is writing enough quality lyrics to fill up an album. ABB was pretty darn near a great great album, but with the removal of one or two songs, I think that it would have truly held up with the likes of so many of their other gems.

A lot of people thought Hurricane should of been on the album. What a load of crap that is.

I see what you mean, but still it is kinda charming - but it sorely lacks a melody, though.

Agree totally with the first line of James Kirk's post.

You'll be happy to know that they used every song that they recorded.

I like the song - and the metaphorical 'life in the fast lane' lyrics (much better than the juvenile rubbish Jagger wrote for songs like Oh No, Not you Again and Sweet neocon). Not top-drawer Stones, but solid enough.

ABB is a bit of a curate's egg, lyric-wise. Several songs showing a pleasant maturity and world-weariness (Biggest Mistake, Let Me Down Slow, Laugh I Nearly Died, Look what the cat dragged in and Keith's This Place is Empty), a couple showcasing a great sense of humour (eg Dangerous Beauty) and others being utterly trite and banal (the two mentioned above and Streets of Love).

Well, each to their own, but, with the exception of Rough Justice, the kind of run-of-the-mill rock (not rock 'n ' roll) on A Bigger Bang is not acceptable as far as I'm concerned.
To me, music of this "quality" is the kind of stuff that loads of bands were churning out in the 1970s and which I thought the Stones would never stoop to.

A curate's egg? More like a rotten egg.

my take as well...except i think RJ is the WORST example of run-of-the-mill fluff...so i agree with you even more emphatically than you do....or something.

I was just listening to ABB on a plane ride yesterday. Everything about the album that I loved then, I still enjoy today. But just as I did then---there's quite a lot to skip over. I still dig "Rough Justice" and "Look What The Cat dragged In" still gets my foot a'tappin. It's just a shame that the clunkers really weigh this album down. The effort is appreciated to go back to a Mick/Keith writing duo while still keeping the general sound to a basic garage band feel. A little more quality control could have made this one a true homerun. Alas...
