If Jerry Garcia had never existed as a public musician, my life would have actually been improved. Nothing personal against him as a human being, but my ears hate the music he is responsible for spawning. He made me hate hippies.

It is a bit odd that people feel compelled to enter an OT post with subject matter that they knowingly dislike just to rain on someone else's parade and multiple times in one poster's case?

If we could just get him to hear Franklin's Tower, he'd Roll Away the Dew.

Well at least one thing you aren't, 24FPS, and that's boring.
And I'm not a "deadhead" or a "hippie".

Pete and Jerry were friends and The Who and The did some shows together in Oakland 73??
Pete told Jerry at one point that he was depressed having to play the same show over and over again unlike the GD.
I saw this show (Oakland '76) The Dead opened the show at 11:00am played three hours followed by The Who....I was so mellow from The Dead and when The Who opened their set with I Can't Explain it was like a sonic boom slap in the face..Two of my favorite bands at opposite sides of the music style spectrum.

I'm not a big fan of Jerry Garcia or the Dead, but you've absolutely got to love Jerry's guitar playing on this Graham Nash song--it made me go out and buy the album!

Was that him playing steel? Not exactly up there with Sneaky Pete Kleinow or anything. I kept waiting for something extraordinary and it never happened. I'm telling you, I don't have Dead Ears.

I guess the hardest thing to explain to a hard core Dead Head is that I truly don't like the sound of the band. And I truly am not impressed by Jerry's guitar playing. Think of it as starting at point zero, and everytime I hear Dead music, or someone tries to show me with some song how wrong my ears must be, it pushes my Dead Mind backwards into deeper and deeper negative territory.
Is it really that unfathomable that someone, somewhere, me, might not like a certain rock group? Are we supposed to love each and every one of them? Most women I know can't stand Bob Dylan singing. But I don't push more Bob Dylan on them. I have friends who don't like me playing so much Rolling Stones. I also don't like Styx or Rush, but they seem easier to avoid than the Grateful Dead because of their disciples. And there must be a lot of people who don't like the Grateful Dead. How many hit records did they have? Your average rock fan could maybe name 3 Dead songs, Truckin', Ridin' That Train or whatever it's title is, and Touch of Gray, because of that video on MTV.
Please love your group, take it Furthur, man. But don't push it on other people who don't care, or are turned off by it. And least of all don't be angry and hateful because somebody else doesn't dig your trip. Think of it as keeping all the jugband music to yourself. Lucky you, unenlightened me. I'll muddle through.Peace on ya.

You must live in some bizzaro universe. I know many people who would say quite the opposite.
RIP brother
And I know just as many who consider Deadland the bizzaro universe. Where music that hurts most people's eardrum with curdled vocals and badly played covers are magically transformed into other people's ears as actual music. It's a funny world.

You just have to ignore this guy. He jumps into EVERY thread that mentions the Grateful Dead or Jerry and throws out his adversarial barbs! just hasn't ever gotten over that he missed the bus!

You know, while I completely disagree with 24FPS's opinion of The Dead, I can actually relate to how people trying to pursuade him to dig it can have the opposite effect.
I've felt the exact same way about three bands over the years; bands that have done nothing for me at all, and the brow-beating I've gotten for it.
R.E.M., The Doors and Pearl Jam to be precise.
"How can you be a fan of classic rock and not like The Doors - what's WRONG with you?"
I guess my problem is that I'm unable to stomach Morrison's pretentious psuedo poetry?
"I guess you're just unable to 'get' Michael Stipe?"
I guess I don't get how being a pioneer of Casterated Whine-Rock is a good thing?
"You don't understand - Pearl Jam is the only group that's mattered in the last 20 years!"
One word - Jeremy. Melodramatic barf. Pass.
I try not to make it a habit of posting my hatred of these bands in any OT threads here, but it's very, very difficult for me not to.
