Where did this come from? When was it recorded? It's nice...

Its Keith with Toots & The Maytals.

Released as an i-tunes Christmas single (along with a reissue of his own 1978 cover of Run Rudolph Run) in December 2007.

Recorded in 2003 and finished in 2005, according to nzentgraf.de

Recorded in May 2003 in New
York City at Dangerous Music Studios and was finished probably on November 10,
2005 at San Diego's Santee's Strate Sound Studios.
- Pressure Drop (Frederick Hibbert)
Probable line-up: KR (gtr, voc)/Toots Hibbert (org, voc)/Paul Douglas (dr)/Jackie
Jackson (bass)/Charles Farquharson (keyb)/Dwight Pickney (gtr)/Sticky (perc)

I think it's utterly brilliant.

I know Keith loves reggae, Mick too. But I wished they have stayed out of it. Somehow the two entities don't mix - Stones and reggae. Keith's reggaes on latter Stones albums are pretty lame. Like sleeping tablets.

They do. Magnificently at times. Both solo (Keith, primarily) and as a band.

And Keith has only sang lead on two reggae songs on Stones albums - their cover of Too Rude and on You Dont Have To Mean It.

This collaboration on 'Pressure Drop', Keith's cover of 'The Harder They Come' (the original b-side of Run Rudolph Run) and 'Words of Wonder' from his second solo album are absolutely fantastic. The Wingless Angels' first album (while not strictly reggae) is lovely as well.

When you dabble in different genres (and the Stones have done a lot of that over the years) it's just that....dabbling. It's unconvincing and gives an album a hodge-podge feel. If the band was in a reggae mood I would much rather that it explore the genre and do a reggae album to see what it can do with it. Same with some of the funk stuff they have done. At least the album would have a feel, a vision. I felt that way then and still think it would have been a good idea. Perhaps the band would have found some inspiration on the later albums.

All Stones albums are by nature 'hode podge' genre wise and have been since the mid 60s at the latest.

It hasnt turned out too badly - if anything their diversity has been a major strength.

No version, not Keith, Toots, Izzy, original, etc. (and I have heard them all) can even come close to the Clash version ... simply brilliant!

It's certainly broadened their audiences, and in general given them areas to grow.

Latter day of course it all seems a little forced.

Still, I much prefer the variety.

Many of my favourite Stones songs are recordings where they stepped out of their rock n roll/R&B comfort zone - Slave, Torn & Frayed, Let It Loose, Continental Drift, Everything is Turning to Gold, Moonlight Mile and numerous others.

It actually does them a disservice - and to their detriment its something theyve pandered to in concert in recent years - to merely think of them as being an act whose greatness is limited to 'rock anthems'.

Up until very recently, they've embraced and I think at least, transcended some genre's. Country for one, Gospel, and even disco.

Sure they have "dabbled" into many music genres. Some for the better, som for the worse. I'm not a Chuck Berry purist but when it comes to reggae I don't think they hade added anything to the genre. At best they can manage a decent cover. Maybe reggae is the hardest genre to "dabble" in?

The Clash managed it pretty well.

The Clash managed it pretty well.

The Clash had Topper Headon. And reggae appeared before the Clash, while the Stones already had their own style when reggae became big.

I do love both the Stones and the Clash doing reggae. And also reggae from Jamaica. Even the stupid ska covers of Me first & the gimme gimmies!

I wouldn't really call the Wingless Angels reggae though. But they are really special to me.

It's good for sure. Pleasant, good vibes. But calling this brilliant... I woudn't go that far, nor do I think that's what they were going for at this cool-but-VERY-basic jam.

I have previously recommended "The Harder They Come" soundtrack and do it again. It's a fun listen and PD is on it.

No mention of Robert Palmer? He covered it before those guys, as the title track of an album

I like the Clash too, but I maintain that you can't beat Toots & the Maytals original recording. I'm sure if Joe were still here, he would agree.

You Don't Have To Mean It isn't exactly reggae but it's certainly inspired by it. And as far as reggae-anything The Rolling Stones have done, it's their best. The Stones don't have the disposition of the kind of tempo and groove that reggae requires.
