OT: Jimi Hendrix: how nine months in London made him a star

Jimi Hendrix arrived in London on September 24, 1966, as an unknown guitar slinger. By the time he left in June 1967, he was one of the biggest acts in Britain, with a string of hit singles, a debut album that had made number two in the charts behind him, and a reputation for wild virtuoso live performances. As a new exhibition, 'Hear My Train A Comin' – Hendrix Hits London', opens this week, curator and Hendrix fanatic Jacob McMurray guides James Lachno through the celebrated US musician's explosive first trip to London and how it made him a star.

As one of the readers commented on that site, it was Chas Chandler who saw Jimi in New York at the Cafe Wha and asked him to go over to London. At the time Chas had just left, or was about to leave, The Animals. He said Jimi just asked if he could meet Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck and Chas said no problem since they were mates of his.

Getting on Kit Lambert's Track Records label didn't hurt either.

How did they manage to restrain Jimi for those gigs--he must have had a straightjacket on for a stage outfit.

I remember seeing an early 70s interview with Clapton where he recalled Hendrix sitting in with Cream ..........he knew there and then that the "Clapton is God" thing was over.
