Yeah, but live tones are always much easier to capture than studio ones. I dunno, maybe try getting hold of a Rangemaster clone or something like that?

Two things to add to the thread. My oldest vinyl version (pre-Stones) called it "The Red Rooster" and was it Mick or Bill who said that the band were incredibly proud of the fact that they took a pure blues number to No1 in the charts. Rightly so of course.

No humbuckers (the SG is with P90s) and the amp is an old ampeg jet, so quite a "clean" overdrive, so to speak.

Do you think there is some chorus added?

On the studio version the attack is well defined and you hear the strings, the kind of stuff you get when playing slide with an acoustic or a dobro. Could it be the Gretsch or the Casino that he was using?

Sorry, I promise to restrain my silliness for the rest of the rest of day...I do so love that song and hope to hear it live someday.

One of my favorite versions; This is why Eric is Eric.
And the interplay with Mick's harp later in the tune is just great as well.
These solos stun me.
John Lee Hooker comes on around 5:45 for the next song;
I guess fans have heard this Rooster more than once; (I'm not sure anything will ever 'beat' the Stones original studio take on it. )

I thought the version on "Love You Live" was one of the best live Rolling Stones recordings (and about the only good thing on that record). When "the dogs begin to bark," Kieth's guitar and Woods' guitars start barking. I like how low-key they made it, like a real old Chicago blues song.
