hmm...are they "stage ready" for the Olympics....?

in case you got time and opportunity you could bash them a bit for not including some ´73 live stuff at the Quadrophenia box set.

just kidding....

Yes. Please ask them why there was no '73 live stuff in the Quadraphenia box...I'm not kidding....

But then don´t bash them too hard if they got plans to release this stuff soon...

Must be their long-rumoured Quadrophenia tour--that would be delightful news! PT never plays the solo in the middle of Love Reign O'er Me the same way twice. I wonder if they'll ever release a proper version of the Cow Palace 1973 San Fran gig where KM passes out and they had to deputize a drummer from the audience--my bootleg version has horrible sound and out-of-sync stop-and-start video... probably not, though, as it wasn't one of their prouder moments as a band.

The Who should have their own bootleg series. They could start with complete recordings of:

1) Fillmore East April 6, '68
2) San Francisco Civic Aud. December 13, '71 (Bargain and My Wife were used for Two's Missing)
3) Capital Centre, Landover, MD December 6, 1973
4) Swansea Football Ground June 12, 1976 (a few tracks from this were tacked on at the end of the remastered By Numbers)
5) Kampuchea Benefit Dec. 28, 1979 (four songs on appeared on The Concerts for the People of Kampuchea)
6) a representative show from 2000

RUMORS: THE WHO TO ANNOUNCE "QUADROPHENIA" DATES SOON

7/6/2012

With a documentary about "Quadrophenia" making the rounds, reports are surfacing that surviving Who members Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey will take the rock opera on the road this year. Both men spoke about the tour last fall, when special editions of "Quadrophenia" were released; now rumors say an announcement is coming soon about a tour that will start this fall and last into 2013. It will be the first time they've performed "Quadrophenia" in its entirety since March 30, 2010 during a Teenage Cancer Trust benefit at Royal Albert Hall in London. There's no official word from the Who camp yet, however. Meanwhile, "The Who: Quadrophenia - Can You See The Real Me? - The Story Behind The Album" is set to run on July 24 in North American theaters, with a DVD release to follow. Townshend and Daltrey have also signed on to perform at the closing ceremony of the Summer Olympic Games on August 12 in London.

I vote for the Shepherds Bush Empire shows (not technically 2000, but December 22 and 29, 1999, so close enough). Lots of stuff not usually done live in later years. I have a 2CD boot from these shows:

Disc 1
1. I Can't Explain
2. Substitute
3. Anyway Anyhow Anywhere
4. Pinball Wizard
5. My Wife
6. Baba O'Riley
7. Pure And Easy
8. You Better, You Bet
9. Happy Jack
10.I'm A Boy
11.Getting In Tune
12.The Real Me
13.Behind Blue Eyes
(Shepherds Bush 12-22-99)
14.Tattoo
(Bridge Benefit 10.30-99)
15.After The Fire
(Shepherds Bush 12-22-99)

Disc 2
(Shepherds Bush 12-29-99)
1. Magic Bus
2. Boris The Spider
3. Who Are You
4. 5:15
5. Won't Get Fooled Again
6. The Kids Are Alright
7. Johnny Cash Interlude
8. Mary Anne With The Shaky Hands
9. Naked Eye
10.My Generation

Best time I saw The Who since Hammersmith Odeon Dec 1975. I think they played there the next year too. There was real passion and anger and you could tell it meant something coming back to their old stomping ground. Is the gig available to download anywhere as I'd love a copy. I'm also after the Watford Colisseum gig from 2002. Best version of Young Man Blues I ever saw.

The Who concert I attended in 2008 was such a depressing experience, I left with the feeling that I couldn't really imagine any circumstances under which I would ever see them again. On the other hand, the Quadrophenia show I saw in 1996 ranks among the five best concerts I've seen in my lifetime, and I do think that's an experience that bears repeating. Just don't want it to be in another 20,000-seat basketball arena. Let's do something a bit more intimate this time, yes? Anyway, here's the review I posted on IORR of the opening night show from their 2008 U.S. tour:

The Palace of Auburn Hills normally has a seating capacity of around 21,000, but no seats were sold behind the stage, and the upper level seats at the far end of the arena were also closed off and not for sale, so for this show, the seating capacity was probably around 15,000. It was not a sell out.

Pete, as usual, told the story about the Who playing to a crowd of 250 people, the smallest-ever US show, at a club in Ann Arbor in 1967. He also mentioned the legendary Southfield High School Gymnasium show from that same year, a show that EVERY Michigan Who fan of a certain age now claims to have attended. He continued to kiss considerable Motown ass by mentioning the important role Detroit played in early Who history, as the first city in America where Who records sold in large amounts and where they received their first heavy radio airplay. "Anyway", he said, "That's why we're here". He also had praise for a Detroit-made 1956 Lincoln Continental which he said was the best car he's ever owned.

Technical difficulties ruined the first three songs. I couldn't tell if the problem was just with Roger's mike or with the entire PA, but at least a dozen times the sound cut out for a split second. They made no mention of this, much less apologize for it. Pete turned up his amp during Getting In Tune, as if trying to overpower the PA gremlins with sheer volume. The sound cut out one more time during Fragments, and after that, it only happened one more time, at the end of Sister Disco, yet during Who Are You, Pete was having some other problem, as he completely stopped playing for about 15 seconds and was instead frantically waving his arms at soundman Bobby Pridden.

It took a long time for me to really get into the music. I think the first time I even applauded was at the end of Baba O'Riley. Relay was where it all came together, one of the few times, along with the jam at the end of Amazing Journey, where they resembled the heavy rock band they once were. Nice and loud. I could feel my drink vibrating in my hand.

Pete played well, but this was the least energetic I have ever seen him. He apologized for his relatively lackluster performance, blaming it on jet lag and lack of sleep. Sitting up high, where I could get a good look at him, I spent most of the night watching Zak. Visually far more interesting than the geriatric, slow-motion movements of Pete and Roger, who looked by comparison like a couple of old men doing tai chi in the park.

Roger's voice always tends to sound better "in the room", than it does when you go back later on and listen to the soundboard, and he sounded okay for most of the show last night, but by the time he sang See Me, Feel Me his voice was like a death rattle, and I really wondered how he could possibly get through tonight's show in Ontario, much less the rest of the tour.

When he sang Tea And Theatre, in a voice that produced the most grotesquely offensive sounds I've ever heard come out of a concert PA, it made the lyrics seem all the more poignant.

So great are the Who, that even this, the worst Who concert I've ever attended, was still a somewhat enjoyable and ultimately, worthwhile experience.

After the show, I called the on-air DJ at the local classic rock station and we talked about the Who for a while. He was doing a "Who concert replay", playing all of the songs the Who played in the order that they played them. He needed my help. He asked me which album Tatoo was on. I told him it was on The Who Sell Out. He seemed confused by this. He skipped over Tatoo.

The inclusion of Kenny Jones as drummer would satisfy many including myself.

Why he has been excluded all these years would be a great question that would probably elicit a disingenuous response.

Roger Daltrey: "Some nights it makes it, some nights it doesn't. And that was the trouble with Kenny. The nights when it makes it, those nights became fewer and fewer."

Who manager Bill Curbishley, "It was Roger who pushed to get Kenny out of the band. He didn't think he was right for the Who."

Kenny Jones: "There is no right drummer for the Who, there will never be a right drummer for the Who, it'll always be Keith, but,... there you go."

Of course he was horrible. One minute he's a Who fan, and the next minute, he's the Who's drummer. I guess it would help to be very drunk in a situation like that. That's the only way I can imagine him being able to function at all, under the circumstances.

Kenney Jones was fine for his first year with The Who, but didn't cut it after 1980. Simon Phillips is a great fusion drummer, but he's all wrong for The Who.

The only post-Moon Who drummer who is up to the task is Zak Starkey, who got his first drum kit from Moon and derives his style from Moon without slavishly copying Moon.

REPORT: A WHO TOUR ANNOUNCEMENT COMING NEXT WEEK

7/6/2012

Reports out of London say that the Who will be officially announcing the dates to their upcoming tour of Quadrophenia -- possibly as early as next week. The tour -- which has already been announced by the band as spreading over the end of 2012 and into 2013 -- will be the Who's first run of extended dates since their 2008 mini-North American trek. The band -- which is now led by co-founders Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey -- has signed on to headline the Olympic Games closing ceremony on August 12th in London.
Townshend spoke candidly to us about wanting to the Who to take Quadrophenia on the road as soon as possible: "The last time we played it was at a teenage cancer concert at the Royal Albert Hall and I just thought it fabulous. I feel it's time to revisit it -- and I'm talking about the concert that we did in '96 for the Prince's Trust, which we then took on the road in late-'96 and all the way through '97. Y'know, we did 90 shows with it. I've kinda been waiting patiently; this is, this is (laughs) a real reversal, 'cause usually Roger is the one that wants to go on tour and I'm the one going, 'Hey, hold up, I've got this to write and this to do' -- I'm usually the one that's being nagged."

All hail The Ox's overly extravagant lifestyle. Were it not for his persistent debt situation, Pete Townshend would have left the Who back in '82 and there would now be no Quadrophenia tour to look forward to today. Entwistle got Townshend back out on the road again and kept him there, until Pete realized an appreciation for what the Who have come to represent.
