OT - Jim McCarty/Yardbirds

While in NYC recently, I saw play and had the chance to have dinner with the legendary Yardbird (among other bands), Jim McCarty. I just wanted to share what a decent, humble and sweet man he is. Also, he played this song at the Iridium that night, and for several reasons I won't expound upon here (personal stuff), I will never forget it - forgetting all that though, I think it is a gorgeous song that really represents his gentle spirit and countenance - and oddly, its wistfullness makes me think of the crossroads the Stones are at right now.

(I'll add that when I played t for my 18 year old, who has wonderful taste in music, he remarked - "I like it- it's really pretty. And sounds like something the Rutles would have done." I laughed hard because I think he's right!)

Wonderful tribute to Keith Relf from the Yardbirds 2003 album, Birdland.

The 2003 lineup of the Yardbirds in action. That's Gypie Mayo, who you might remember from Dr. Feelgood, on lead guitar.

Anybody remember Box Of Frogs from 1984? It's a forgotten piece of Y-birds history that Jim McCarty, Chris Dreja, and Paul Samwell-Smith reunited for, but they couldn't use the name Yardbirds then because Jimmy Page wouldn't relinquish rights to the name at the time. This live version is by the Jim McCarty band performing at the Frog & Roll Festival in France, August 28, 1992. McCarty on lead vocals here!

They did another album in '85. Jeff Beck played on a new version of Heart Full of Soul. And Jimmy Page joins them here for this original, called Asylum.

And here's Jeff Beck doing that version of Heart Full Of Soul w/ Box of Frogs in 1985.

And this is a pretty good song from their 1984 album Box Of Frogs. John Fiddler was the vocalist on this one, called Back Where I Started.
