Chuck - Sea Level
Posted by: buffalo7478 ()

I have vague memories of Chuck's post-Allman band, Sea Level, in the 70s. I forgot that is also included Allman's percussionist, Jaimoe. I recently took a listen, and they weren't bad (though I am sure the Check-haters would still hate them!).

But here is a link to a bootleg on Guitars 101 of Sea Level, live in Chicago, 1977 for those that want to check it out.

Chuck-haters only hate Chuck with the Stones, so we're more like "Chuck in the Stones haters."

I saw Sea Level perform at the "Good Life City" concert in Albany Georgia in 1977 if I remember rightly. I was working the front of the stage and had a good view. Good performance as I remember it...

Chuck can do it all. I love most of his work with the Stones. I reallly love his work before the Stones worked their spell on him. At least he friggin survived the ordeal.

He is committed to two of the same things I am, music and farming. And we both play a pretty mean chain saw. I hope he lives forever, I love the man and the musician.

Thanks for this Sea Level stuff buffalo7478, I had known about it but must have forgotten it. peace

The Stones would survive without Chuck, and Chuck would certainly survive without the Stones as player, producer, farmer and environmental activist.

LOL I only posted the Sea Level link to give people a sample of more of his pre-Stones body of work. Most of us have heard his playing with the Allmans and studio work with The Black Crowes....just trying to give this board......even the Chuck haters, something to check out.

I am neither Chuck hater or lover with the Stones. Though I would not mind hearing him produce a Stones studio record based on the sound he got out of the Crowes.

Not a Chuck hater, I just wish he wasn't as prevalent in the rehearsing and song selection process as he is, because now his fingerprints are more evident on the latter day Stones than either Mick's or Keith's...That's not CL's fault. That's MJ & KR's failing.

chuck haters: isn't it true that your loathing of chuck is really just a diversionary tactic to mask the truth that in reality you hate yourself? hmmm?

self-hatred isn't curable...but you can get temporary relief by pretending to hate chuck.

Look you two...stop arguing!

Mick and Keith were clear at the very beginning.

He can chuck out any time he likes, but he can never leavell.

I had forgotten about Sea Level. That was the band with Joe English, the drummer on the Wings Over America tour (1976?). And on the Venus and Mars and Wings at the Speed of Sound records.

Always thought he did a good job (with them at least).

Saw them at The Attic in Greenville N.C. in late 70's.
Met several of them outside the venue before they got back on the tour bus.
Great band.

"Though I would not mind hearing him produce a Stones studio record based on the sound he got out of the Crowes."

Smiles but two important things to say about our shared wish there buffalo7478:

1. Chuck only played keyboards on that great first Black Crowes record, the sound was, imho, the work of Brendon O'Brien, who I can personally say is a fantastic guitar player and engineer. Any who know his work will hear it all over that record. George D. and later Rick Rubin were credited as producers but I was near the action at the time and can assure you it was all Brendon. This is supported by the huge demand Brendon created for his talents as a direct result of the success of Shake Your Money Maker. The dude is a star in his own right and one of my favorite engineer/producer/musicians on the planet. Cheers Brendon for your work, you play better than any of us!

2. Both Mick and Keith view that sound and style as something they already did and quite well at that. I don't see Mick getting nostalgic enough about that sound to want to re-create it with the Stones. Keith was infactuated with them for a bit because he has an ear for good music, while I believe Jagger is more concerned with the whole picture and probably feels it would somehow diminish the records they did in the 70's if they didn't do it BETTER.

I can add some juicy facts to the scene surrounding the making of that record...those boys burned alot of weed and it was an integral part of their playing and recording at that time. They were more than generous in the sharing of it, if I can remember correctly! lol They were living a dream that was created by the ubiquitous images of the Stones circa 1972-74.

Not sure where Rich is these days but Chris recently invited me to a show where his new band played very very well. The Chris Robinson Band. The fact that it wasn't even sold out tells a sad tale of the state of the industry these days. I felt like I was watching something historic. Highly recommend seeing them if you get a chance. Thanks Chris, I and I. peace

Um, that would be a "no". Chuck himself seems like a nice enough fellow. It's only his piano playing that I loathe.

denial is a dangerous thing. find a way to mitigate thy self-loathing and ye shall see the light in chuck's playing.

I saw Chuck with BHLT years ago. Great band. Betts, Hall, Lavell, and Trucks. It was at the old Tralf in Buffalo.

What I don't like of CL with the stones:

1) his sound

2) he sticks mainly to the original arrangements of the songs. I don't know if it is his idea, or this is what they want him to do. But in the past, Nicky, Billy, and Mac all added something new and personal, he does not. Even his solos are always the same.

Wow, thanks for the info. I will look up more on Brendan. I feel the Stones have needed a new Jimmy Miller. Not trying to make them sound modern, but to bring out what is naturally there. Maybe he's the guy. But I also get your point of Mick not being into it. They should wear their age and classic sound as a badge of honor. Let the world come to them.

Chris is playing Buffalo sometime in the coming month or so. Rich was here sveral months ago for a tiny acoustic gig in the basement of a venue owned by Ani DiFranco.

Thank you buffalo7478. Glad to hear Rich is still gigging. He sure has some nice guitars!

Living in Buffalo you probably see my friends in The Park Avenue Band play there occasionally? Rochester boys and true to the 70's rock we all love. They rip a pretty mean version of Little Feat's Fatman in the Bathtub, in any case.

Btw, You are spot on about Brendon producing the Stone's! We may have stumbled on to a real winning combination there! Brendon could sure play Keith's parts if he was having trouble. All Keith would have to do is kinda grunt out the licks, I'm sure Brendon would know just what to play! lol peace
