OT - Songs of Glenn Frey in the 1980s
Posted by: BrianJones1969 ()

I wonder if anyone here is a fan of the Eagles and one of its three noted members, Glenn Frey? (Don Henley and Joe Walsh were the other two Eagles who had solo careers of varying degrees.)

"The Heat Is On" (from Beverly Hills Cop original motion picture soundtrack)

(those "Whoa-oh-oh"s that creep up before "Caught up in the action" and the "Tell me can you feel it" refrain may bring to mind the Ronettes and their producer, Phil Spector)

"Smuggler's Blues" (from The Allnighter and Miami Vice: The Soundtrack, Volume 1)

(this song's title was also the focal point for an MV episode of the same name)

"You Belong to the City" (from Miami Vice: The Soundtrack, Volume 1)

I wonder if the Rolling Stones could ever do a cover of "Smuggler's Blues" since both Keith and Ronnie, as well as our Sir Mick, can do excellent slide guitar work, which is what propels the song?

The Heat is On is OK in my book. That's as far as I'm prepared to go in public.

NO! Glenn Frey is among the lamest of the lame, particularly in his solo incarnation.

I enjoy the Eagles, Don Henley solo, and Joe Walsh solo. Glenn Frey's solo stuff has always been boring to me. Maybe because it sounds so dated.

He suffers from 80's production for sure.
All solo Eagles from Don to Joe is as corny and needy as it gets.

Take a song like Already Gone, and compare it to this tripe.
Glenn was caught up in overproduced underwritten and uninspired crap at this time.

In fact, Don Johnson's solo LP was better since he had the presence of mind to ask SRV to spruce it up...

The archive releases from John are really out of this world. Or this town. Or the trash...can't really remember

First off, you have to take into account that the Eagles were kaput at this time and Glenn, being half of the writing team that propelled the Eagles to multi-platinum status, was going to forge on in one form or another and the form of a solo Glenn Frey was a natural fit. His music at that time was a reflection of the tastes of the time and his recordings show that in retrospect and do seem a bit dated by todays measure.

Actually it's a lot like Mick and Keith doing their solo projects when The Stones were on hiatus. None of the single members of either band are ever going to be as great as the whole band together. Glenn put out some decent singles considering the dismal state of pop music at the time.

I did have a chance to catch Glenn and Joe Walsh together on tour at that time. Back then it was the closest thing you could get to seeing the Eagles live. Let me tell you, it was a fantastic show. You got some greatest hits by the Eagles, Joe Walsh AND Glenn Frey. It was a three-fersmiling smiley

Never had a problem liking Stones and Eagles and Beatles.

Glenn is probably the weakest of the Eagles solo. Henly and Walsh can certainly hold their own. Glenn did have a few hits back in the 80's. But his best stuff is definitely in the Eagles. They're all back working on solo stuff now. I've heard Walsh's new solo album is pretty good. Henly is supposedly going to a Country album and Frey is working on an album of standards. I guess he wants to be the next Rod Stewart.winking smiley

And on Zevon's '76 album. VERY good work from Frey and Henley.

Wow, I haven't heard "The One You Love" in years, perhaps even decades.

OMG, how lame do you have to be, when it takes Don Henley to put some edge into your songs?

Yes the 80's were a sad time. Bad music, k cars, bad politcs, terrible cloths. Even The Stones were at an all time low. So sad.

Didn't Glenn write "The Greeks Don't Want No Freaks"

Is that forgivable?
I'm into forgiveness...
