It was 40 years ago today...

...that my mom and dad dropped a 15-year old little hippie kid off in front of RFK Stadium in Washington DC and said "have fun and we'll pick you up after the concert". I'll never forget that day, the concert, and my first time seeing "The Greatest Rock'n'Roll Band in the World".

Congratulations, that sounds like a great memory for any age but especially for 15.

Stones69, LOVE your story.
How do you parents feel about the Stones these days?

stonesrules, sorry for the delayed response. Unfortunately both my mom and dad are gone. But my dad was never a big fan, although for some reason really liked "Brown Sugar". My mom kinda liked them.

Your mention of RFK stadium jogged my memory Stones69. I just realized that it was 26 years ago today that I was there for an all day concert featuring Tom Petty, Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead. It was unbelievably hot, so we pushed our way down front later in the day to get hosed off by the stadium crew. Between the heat and the refreshments I don't remember much about the music, by the time the Dead took the stage I think I was napping, which is how I got through most Dead concerts in those days. Lots of good memories of concerts at RFK, wish I'd seen the Stones there.

So stones69, let hear your impressions and memories of the show!

Well, as a 15 year old, I hadn't started experimenting with booze or any drugs yet, so I figured that since everybody else waiting outside the gate was, I would have some kind of advantage when the gate opened. When it did open I bolted for the turnstiles as quick as I could and literally got pushed through. They never even tore my ticket; it's intact and I still have it. So, I ran for the field figuring that it was the closest I could get to my idols. Of course thousands more had the same idea, although I did manage to get about 30 feet from the stage.

Being July 4th, a substantial amount of people figured they would celebrate by setting off firecrackers and bottle rockets, lots of bottle rockets! I kept thinking to myself this must be what war sounds like. I couldn't wait until Martha Reeves and the Vandels and Stevie Wonder were over so the Stones could come on. It seemed like forever but finally the moment came and it was like so electric, just seeing them take the stage.

I believe Mick's first words were "Hello Campers!" and that just sent the 50,000 plus into more of a frenzy. It was so loud! They launched into "Brown Sugar" and "Bitch" and being a huge fan of Sticky Fingers, that was fine by me! They tore through their typical setlist for that tour and I was just amazed. It seemed that their time on stage went by in a blur, perhaps due to me attending my first stadium concert. It was dreamlike if that makes sense. I wish I could be more specific, but that was a long 40 years ago. But to this day, I'm so happy I got to see them in their prime.
