Rhetoric about Mick I keep hearing on the radio - promo strategy or coincidence?
Posted by: swiss ()

hi - recently I have been driving a ton in California, which isn't something I do
often. Have been listening to lot of radio---or more accurately, flipping from
station to station in search of anything good.

So-----this is weird-----all different stations (but all "oldies" stations), in different
parts of California, totally different shows, different DJ, I keep hearing the same
rhetoric about Mick Jagger.

The sort of old-school enthusiastic DJ will say, as a Stones' song winds down,
"Hey - wow!! The Rolling Stones are still SO hot, aren't they?!? WOW!! That
Mick Jagger. He blows me AWAY, man! That guy is just RIPPED. Just incredible
SHAPE! Jagger really can move --- and his voice is better than ever -- and he's
how old? upward of 70? He sure can still tear it UP! Man, I hear the Stones
are gonna be touring next year. DAMN! I can't wait for that. I would NEVER miss
that. To see MICK JAGGER?!?! The guy's a LEGEND and such great SHAPE!"

Now-------mind------I'm not contesting any of that. And yeah, he was on SNL 2
months ago. But this SAME language is being used. Same exact formula,
practically. The mention of the Stones' relevance today. Followed by going on
and on about the stupendous shape Mick is in. Then the plug about his voice
being so awesome still. Then mentioning--same language--his age ("Wow! is he
really nearing 70?!" ) . Followed by the reference to the Stones touring next
year. And returning to accolades about Mick.

I heard this same thing maybe 6 times in 2 days.

Do you think it's an attempt at "viral" promo, on Clear Channel franchise stations?
A ramp-up for next year? Or total coincidence?

I'd say coincidence.

BTW, the Oldies station here in New Orleans is run by a major Beatles freak.
I'd say the ratio of Beatles to Stones tunes played is about 10:1, and I think the newest Stones tune played by this station is JJF.

I've never heard Mick or the Stones talked up at all by the station here.

Well, Swiss, you never know. It could also be the limited imagination and ad lib abilities of your run of the mill disc jockey. Maybe the answer is somewhere in between.

It is absolutely NOT coincidence, I promise. Stealth marketing is extremely, extremely sophisticated today. If you are awake, you are being advertised to.

You pretty much know when a storm is coming when storm clouds begin to gather. Not sure exactly what is going on here but at what point does something become more than coincidence? Good post, swiss.

I'd be interested in what BluzDude and other Californians think about this.
I know seven or eight radio guys in LA, SF and along the coast who talk and think with great enthusiasm about Mick and/or the Rolling Stones. Believe his Grammy performance kicked up a new round of appreciation and the White House, SNL didn't hurt.

At least four of the dj's I'm thinking of saw the Stones live in the 1969 or 1972 dates in LA and SF...and have fantastic Stones vinyl.

I work in advertising. This is the way it's done these days. Definitely part of a marketing campaign, no coincidence.

Swiss I have to agree with Send it To Me's brilliant statement above, and add "If it's on the radio and it ain't music, it's marketing" . Travel safely friend. peace

If you heard those DJ remarks on Clear Channel stations exclusively, then it's even more obvious that the band have apparently struck a deal with Clear Channel/Live Nation to promote and set up a tour. In that case the remarks about Jagger are carefully scripted advertising copy and part of the campaign to promote the tour.

I think that both the Maroon 5 and Kesha songs that mention Mick Jagger ("Moves Like Jagger" and "Tick-Tock" respectively) were an early part of the campaign to promote a Rolling Stones tour in 2012/2013. Both Maroon 5 and Kesha are being promoted by Clear Channel/Live Nation, too.
The mention of Jagger in the songs/products of other artists, which appeal to a different target group is a good example of cross-marketing in the entertainment business.

I talked to someone in New Jersey tonight and he said that except for one bit of spiel claiming the Stones are going to do a show for the 50th anniversary all he and his sister have been hearing on the radio for the last two weeks is that the Stones have called it quits and will not be playing again...................

I met a woman and she told me...."well baby...... well the blues ain't bad"...........

That makes sense. Isn't New Jersey the state where if someone tells you you are a f u c k, it really means they like you? Brilliant marketing has no limits. peace

My wife insists that Jagger must've had some plastic surgery on his abs to keep his skin that tight in his midsection.

It's sad that in the days of automatted playlisting and scripted DJ announcements, real radio DJs with knowledge of the music they play have been replaced by voice actors.

Tom Petty's song "The Last DJ" comes to mind.

Then again, due to the internet, radio is losing listeners back and forth.

Thanks to the original poster for interpreting the signs hinting at a possible tour. It all makes sense and you are probably right in what you have observed.

That DJ must be tuned to his own station. Jagger's voice is better than ever? Based one what? That he just played a song from 1968? Yeah, his voice does sound good.

But it will never be 'better than ever'. That's just pure nonsense. You need to call that station and ask what drugs that DJ is on.

I know that the classic rock sattion in San Francisco does a daily Stones at 50 featuire. Playing usually a deeper Stones cut at 2:20 everyday. That's Steven Seaweed, who's been a longtime Bay Area DJ. But other than that. HAven't really heard any local people talk much about the Stones. Of course rdaio is so bad around here, espicially on the Cumulus stations. It's tough to listen much.
