This is one of the rare Stones songs that actually sounds better without Jagger's vocal.

A Stones song that - actually - sounds better without Jagger's vocals?

That is like a cheeseburger without cheese...

Sort of like a Quarter Pounder without cheese. Which can be good on occasion.

The lyrics to "All Sold Out" are rather inane to start, and Jagger gives it a rather angry sort of delivery. Maybe they could re-write the lyrics and do something else with this song.

Love the song - with vocals!!! It's very 60s just like the times.

Also missing are the backing vocals. Would be interesting to hear a version with Mick but without them.

This is the first Stones song where I thought Charlie Watts was an exceptional drummer. The syncopation at the end still surprises me.

Where's Brian on this? Not on the guitar anyway. Maybe playing the organ? Or was he out of the picture here?

That sounds like Jack Nietzche on piano, not Stew.

All those 'dub' versions of vocal-less songs from Between The Buttons are amazing. If you listen to Yesterday's Papers without Jagger singing you can hear the amazing timbre of the instruments. The general sound of BTB is very uncluttered, allowing the music to really breathe. I'd love to hear this album in 5.1 format.

The great thing about listening to this track is indeed the many many many details you
can hear that the band has put into this song. An amazingly well crafted piece of work,
with so much going on. A preview of the band that would later come up with songs like
Gimmie Shelter.

Annoyingly some of them, Yesterdays Papers and Ruby Tuesday have a chorus like effect on them which isn't part of the original sound.

Maybe the original bootlegger did that as a signature to keep track of the recordings?

The final versions of All Sold Out and Have You Seen Your Mother Baby Standing in the Shadow are excellent examples of "gilding the lily", and that is not a good thing.

I thought they threw perfume on the violet. Nevertheless it was the times when the Beatles
were busy making Sgt Pepper's, Jefferson's Airplane did Surrealistic Pillow, and The
Kinks just delivered Face to Face. So I guess gilding lilies was quite a popular way to spend
the time these days.

Brians recorder, which we don't hear on this mix, is the weakest link in the final released version. It's a nice line, but the instrument itself doesn't really work for this track.

He might have played piano on this track, Jack Nitzsche playing organ. Or vice versa.
