O/T Pearl Jam, Manchester Arena, Wednesday 20th & Thursday 21st June 2012

Hello,

Pearl Jam are one of the few bands formed in the last 30 years who I rate as a live act (yeah, I'm sure Eddie will be chuffed on hearing that news) so it was a no-brainer when they announced a pair of back-to-back shows.
Mind you, with The Boss playing in town the next night it would be a wallet-bruising few days...but worth it!

Wednesday's set-list...

1.Release
2.Do The Evolution
3.Corduroy
4.The Fixer
5.Given To Fly
6.Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town
7.Pilate
8.Even Flow
9.Unthought Known
10.1/2 Full
11.Insignificance
12.Why Can't I Touch It
(Buzzcocks cover)
13.Immortality
14.Nothingman
15.Got Some
16.Why Go
Encore:
17.Just Breathe
18.Black
19.State Of Love And Trust
20.Arms Aloft
(Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros cover)
21.Porch
Encore 2:
22.Better Man
23.Come Back
24.Jeremy
25.Alive
26.Rockin' in the Free World
(Neil Young cover)

...and the next night's...

1.Go
2.Animal
3.Hail Hail
4.I Am Mine
5.Wishlist
6.Even Flow
7.Lukin
8.Not For You
9.Down
10.Amongst The Waves
11.Daughter
(w/ W.M.A. snippet)
12.Deep
13.Present Tense
14.Once
15.Save You
16.Better Man
(w/ Save It For Later snippet)
Encore:
17.Inside Job
18.Off He Goes
19.Just Breathe
20.Hitchhiker
21.Rearviewmirror
Encore 2:
22.Wasted Reprise Play Video
23.Life Wasted
24.Alive Play Video
25.Sonic Reducer
(Dead Boys cover)
26.Yellow Ledbetter

Set-list FM tells me (and I have no reason to disbelieve it) that only four songs were played both nights: Springsteen! Are you watching? Just joking, Boss.

The intensity was palpable at times, but there was also a fair bit of humour onstage too, thankfully. EV took time to mention the tragedy that befell Radiohead recently which reinforced his 'everyone takes care of their neighbour' vibe. Quite right too.

The Man Of The Match for me was probably guitarist Mike McCready: he nailed pretty much everything and was a constant source of energy and spectacle. This has to be a band playing at the top of their game, surely?

Cheers,

Simon.

Springsteen can't do shows this different from date to date. He's a bit too mainstream. But he does pretty great considering the circumstance. Him and Pearl Jam are just awesome amazing live acts. Isle Of Wight with them and Tom Petty this weekend must have been insane.

You were lucky to attend those shows. In France there will be only Arras June 30. I cannot see it.

PJ is really the best band in activity besides Stones.
Too bad Layne Staley died, PJ and AIC are really 2 fantastic bands.

I'd gladly bust my wallet for a Springsteen PJ Daily Double. Waiting for the Pearls to do some more shows in the U.S.. As for the setlist. Big shakeup yes. But they aren't doing that many shows compared to Bruce.I did see a picture of Eddie wearing a Springsteen T-Shirt during their set at IOW last night. Wonder if he might come on for a guest spot with Bruce tonight?

I will see PJ for the first time the next Monday, I guess I have something to be looking forward too. The setlists look impressive. Not that I would care too much about the setlist, since it is going to be my first show.

Simon, may I ask what time do the shows start and end aproximately? It looks like well over two hours, maybe even close to three? I will jump on a train the morning after the PJ concert and go to Dresden to see Bob Dylan. And then the week after...Bruce...twice! I have two really great weeks in front of me.

Hi H24,

Em, good question: on at 8.50pm and off at 11.15pm both nights, give-or-take 5mins either way.
I'll give you my money-back-if-not-100%-delighted guarantee, hah-hah!
As for Bruce, well...set aside a bit more time!

Cheers,

Simon.

Thanks, Simon, I know it will be great. I didn't manage to get a FOS ticket, so I have a seat, which I don't like much, especially at a concert like this But it is quite a good seat, I guess, something like you had the first night, judging from the photos. I hope people around won't sit.

Was at the second night - first time Ive seen them (I'm a bit of a recent convert). Thought they were utterly brilliant.

Happy24 - they were onstage around 8.50 and finished around 11.10.

Bruce played from 7.18 to 10.38 the following night!

PJ live is a must-see! I'm a fan from day one and I've seen them lots of times. They always were incredible. Yes, those early years, when they toured Ten and Vs. were something else - You had to be there - but they keep the level still very high.

I just heard the legendary punk band X open for them on some gigs. Was it the case at your show?

Hi dcba,

Yep, they did. Due to work and/or meeting-up with folk I wasn't able to catch any of their set on either night though but E.V. was pretty fulsome in his thanks and praise for them.

Cheers,

Simon.

How long after these shows take place do they usually make the 'official bootlegs' available?

PJ is a fabulous live band

funny enough I wasnt super into them when they first came out, but began to follow them later on as they evolved; 'no code' was the one that hooked me

brilliant rock band
