Blondie to Keith is what Bernard (and Lisa) is to Mick. Accompaniment and nothing more.

Yep, exactly.

What invites all the "conspiracy theories" about Blondie is that he's done some of this accompaniment in the background at live shows. But hey...big deal. I don't think it's that often or that extensive. But I know it's happened, and yeah, so what. Keith still plays. Good lord, we can hear the bum notes.

Actually...I have no idea. I probably shouldn't attribute quotes to him or drag him into this...but I think he's on the record on this one. FWIW.

If some were to play either Keith or Ronnie's parts, I believe the best persons for the job would be Pierre de Beauport or Dave Rouze. There soundcheck never fails to make concert goers think the Stones themselves are doing the soundcheck.

Blondie is playing, both electric and acoustic, on stage and off stage, on specific numbers. It's not really a secret as it is written on set lists... He's playing his own thing and you can really hear him on Keith's things such as Slipping Away.

Sticky Fingers original studio recording of Bitch has Keith on rhythm (playing the main riff) with Taylor on the lead noodling.

Incorrect. Keith plays lead on Bitch, and it's quite possibly my favorite lead playing by him. Let's not forget that between 1968-1971, Keith was one of the great lead guitar players in rock.

Please don't invoke the phrase "Gazza Strip". It will just lead to him posting more nude photos and, as a civil servant, he could get in hot water for that sort of thing.

I thought that phrase was related to a style of bikini wax. But I don't profess to know that directly.

OK, if Blondie is playing " Blondie's parts" the question is WHY is he playing at all if Keith is playing all of the parts that he's responsible for? I have also seen Blondie playing just off stage left, still visible if your seats are stage left. In the 70's, there was no Blondie playing any guitar parts for the Stones. I know it's hard to come to terms with but at some point, the Rolling Stones decided it was necessary to have an additional guitar player to augment their song. You can call it " filing in'" or whatever you choose to call it.
No one who's seen the Stones since 2000 can deny that Keith does a lot of posing. Who's filling in the gaps? Blondie is! And for Stonesdoug and Gazza to say that, well I'd have to say that they would know! And really, so what!? If Keith can't play like he used to, it's better to see them together as a band than NOT TO SEE THEM, even if it means altering the line-up a bit!

Blondie is not filling in the gaps. He just strums. nothing more. In fact he is inaudible. I've must of seen the Stones 30 times with Blondie. NEVER HEARD HIM ONCE.

Why would Blondie be out of sight with a guitar if he were not really playing something that the Stones might NOT want the audience to SEE??? Sure, some of us have seen him playing( getting busy, not just strumming) but that's because we had seats that were in just the right spot to see behind stage...most of the audience can't see him...HELL, if they wanted us to SEE what he was doing, he'd be ON STAGE with his guitar.

He is very audible at times. And he is filling in the gaps. I've seen them many times and HAVE heard him do this. Others have not only heard him, but SEEN him do it. But he's not playing "Keith's" guitar parts. Keith still does those. There are just fewer "Keith parts" now than in, say, 1975. But I get the feeling that no amount of discussion will persuade you that this is the case. And that's fine. In the end...who the hell cares anymore? Most people evidently don't.

Can you post a video of Blondie playing with the Stones with his guitar being audible?

Some of the arenas they play have absolutely horrible acoustics. In venues like that, they don't need him fattening the sound, it just adds to the sonic mess. Otherwise, in principle, I agree with those who say he shouldn't be there, but his presence soundwise is so far back in the mix that it really doesn't matter either way.

My most hated Blondie memory is from Chicago in 2005. I took a group of friends with me to Soldier Field to see the boys play. Everyone who went with was seeing them for the first time, so they didn't notice or care. HOWEVER... the very last song... The encore was It's Only Rock 'N Roll and they did a great job. The problem is that Ronnie and Keith were DOWN in the mix and we could hear Blondie's acoustic louder than everyone else!! This is only really noticeable in the last 3 minutes. Just imagine being there and hearing this ear-piercingly loud acoustic guitar blaring at you, knowing that underneath that noise are two excellent electric guitars dueling back n forth...

Even when Keith takes his off the guitar to "pose," I've never heard what he might otherwise be playing coming from someone else. Another thing that hasn't been mentioned much is the fact that ever since the Stee Wheels era, the Stones have strived to present live arrangements that sound more like the studio version. The recordings generally have many guitar parts. Even many electric rockers have accoustic guitar in the background. Perhaps the Stones decided to have Blondie play guitar to expand on the two guitar sound. At any rate, I've seen the Stones many times in recent years and also seen many videos of shows. I've never seen Keith's hands off the guitar and heard his part coming from anyone else. When he stops there's a gap. When he's playing, it's obvious that it's him. The only thing I've noticed is that on some songs in later years, I've heard / seen Woodie playing some parts that Keith used to play. But that's OK because Woodie's a Stone.

Quite so.

This issue's come up a few times in recent years.
Much of the Stones sound on record comes from many layered guitar parts.
I've never seen it as anything but a good thing when Blondie adds an additional guitar to the live mix.

The "modern era" trend of arranging songs more like the recording is an interesting issue in itself.

I've no doubt that most hardened fans would prefer the stripped down guitar driven arrrangements of old [think SFTD or LSTNT].

The reason we don't get these any more lies primarily in the band's perception of their concert audience as comprising largely casual listeners, who need to recognise the songs from the "greatest hits" album they bought last week !

The whole 'Vegas' or 'wall of sound' the Stones have done live for years, especially in big venues, leaves you wondering who is playing what. 3 guitars often buried behind keyboards and horns. I feel the same way about Springsteen, when across teh front of the stage you see Bruce, his wife, Steven and Nils all strumming, yet zero passion or power coming out.

Whatever the Stones do live this next tour I hope it involves fewer people on stage, and guitars that are amped up and powerful, and played with conviction and passion (by whoever plays them).

Agree 100% concerning The Rolling Stones and Bruce Sprinsteen, too: Saw him in Cologne in 2008, what a boring mess of sound ...

Flogging the dead horse a little more...

Yes, the original quote that started this s**t was in jest. (And I do like the reply asking "Who's playing the other half?" Funny...as a JOKE.)

I don't think the following quote was in jest, however, which goes simply to the point that BC sometimes played behind the scenes providing live accompaniment:

I've personally seen it with my own eyes

And in the end, who cares. Keith still plays his "parts" and Blondie fills in, at times incognito behind the amps. It's not overt. And it's certainly not to the extent this thread headline suggests. But to say Blondie never added accompaniment behind the scenes is, I think, not correct. Or was quote linked above said in jest as well? It's so hard to know sometimes.
