Geez all you folks who post the negatives, you can just skip the thread.
They are great rock and roll and there last two albums were amazing. And each album had a live DVD release as well. Then five nights at the Filmore, and all five released live on iTunes. I was at the last two shows and they were phenominal, and especially the last show where they paid homage to their idols The Rolling Stones, by doing, No Expectations, I Just Want to See His Face, Midnight Rambler, Can't You Hear Me Knockin', and the Last Time. What a great tribute.

It is intersting that they announced those would be their last shows, but then they did some shows in Europe. From a source it seems those were booked before they decided on the hiatus. Who knows how long it will be... I hope not too long. Love to see them back on the road, a great live band.

yeah those 8-10 european dates got booked prior to the bands hiatus statement.

anways imo the black crowes don't have a bad album in their catalog. i also have seen them live several times and its nice to see a band that still enjoys the music and isn't touring just to make a buck. the setlists change every night and they played almost their entire catalog during the "say goodnight to the bad guys" tour. they also played tons of covers and some unreleased songs.

The Crowes are a amazing band. Maybe the haters should give them a chance before throwing them to the lions. I hope they come back soon they truly are one of the best bands of the last 25 years. They blow most everyone away live and I dont even think that can be debated but im sure some will try.

YES! Just yesterday I discovered the live shows from the Filmore on itunes, downloaded two of them, fantastic stuff! I choose the ones with the Stones-Covers and with "You´ve got to hide your love away"/"Yer Blues" (last one is outstanding, Lennon would have loved this version!). Great Band and I hope they will come to Germany once more in the future (missed to seet them live so far) ....

I've been playing Chris' new album non stop since last weekend, love it. Mellow, friendly sounding album with great guitar work. Maybe a bit softer then the Crowes I initially started listening to in the nineties, but still a great addition to an incredible oevre.

Would love to see the Black Crowes reform, especially since last years gigs in Paradiso (two of the best shows I've ever been to), but don't expect much from them in the next couple of years.

Later this year Chris will release the follow up to The Big Moon Ritual by the way: The Magic Door.

Also check out Rich's latest solo effort, Through A Crooked Sun (2011).

seems every once in a while here there's another black crowes thread opened up, fair enough i guess

but do the black crowes sill ape/copy a style that was already proven to be successful way back in the early '70s ? (stones, free, faces, humble pie, the band etc). i don't know, i stopped listening to their albums long ago. i think the (younger than me) generation that was born in the 70s and later and who had not been exposed much to Stones/Faces/Humble Pie, etc. really dug them. me? i liked some of their songs but being born a lot earlier, i already had albums from all their influences and they sounded too much like a really kick ass Faces cover band to me, but they were a really good kick ass Faces cover band.

but they still stand head and shoulders above their most of their peers, by peers i mean bands of their era. black crowes certainly owe far too much to the stones to be considered true peers of them. the stones arent peers of buddy guy, either. i mean the black crowes as a band had licks and melodies to be sure, but also IMO a 'nasty habit' (Rolling Stones TM) of watering down their studio stuff down with radio friendly production that ruined most of their material for me. every time I hear one of their songs I think "hey, that's not bad" only to lose interest with each subsequent listen, mostly due to production values.

seems to me too, imo, their albums had a handful of really good songs while too much of the rest is generic blues based rock filler. i mean that is the case with lots of bands but oh well, no need to worry our little heads over them since they have wisely decided to go on hiatus, apparently. or maybe call it quits. they had their time in the sun, anyway

historically? a footnote at best, compared to the all time greats, imo. that's just because the problem with being pegged (fairly or unfairly depending on your point of view) as a retro band, no matter how good you are, you never really carve out a place in history that's generally reserved for originality. they aren't as great songwriters as the bands they emulate. i saw them live once a few years ago and onstage they drifted into long and often endless and pointless jams. it's like the stones influence got shelved and the black crowes were now following the footsteps of the dead and the allmans. are black crowes as good songwriters as the allman brothers were? i'd say no. chris sure can't sing anywhere near half as good as gregg could. which one (Duane or Dickey) is Rich comparable to? the only comparison I see between the black crowes and the allmans for example is being from the South

so, just another band imo, a decent one half the time and I like some of their stuff, just nuthin to write home about imo. i'd turn anybody on to the stones, faces or allmans way before turning them onto the black crowes. i'm even more intrigued, say, by records by 'soul asylum' from the late 80s early 90s like 'Hangtime' (1988) and 'The Horse They Rode In On' (1990) which are more original sounding. they had production issues too but 'Horse' is gem and what I go for over any black crowes record. hey what can i say, each to his own.

I love these guys, hope they come back soon. I have been lucky enough to jam with them a couple times and in my experience it was good old rock and roll fun from the first note. They have come a long way since Shake Your Money Maker.

I think they went through an unnecessarily druggy unfocused period after the first record but are finally growing up and still have their rock and roll chops. This band is as close as we are going to get to new Stone's music imho. peace

They lost it when they kicked Jeff Cease. With him in the band the songs played live had a beginning and an end.
After that every song played live turned into an endless soporific 10-minute "jam" (yawn).

Compare the boots from 90 (tight sound tight playing) to these from 92 : bloody hell this band is bloated! eye rolling smiley

Chris' new band, the Brotherhood will be playing here in Pittsfield, Ma next week at the Colonial Theatre...it only holds 800 so all seats are great. Imay go. I saw the Crowes a long time ago and thought they were very good!

Disagree. Saw them once with Jeff Cease, in 1990, and he was just not that great a guitar player (either that or he was having a really off night). I don't think the song lengths stretching out had as much to do with him leaving the band as they did with the band simply evolving and their tastes/direction changing. Plus they acquired a guitar player in Marc Ford who was a pleasure to listen to, with a very lyrical, dare I say, Taylor-esque, style.

I'm thinking that the minimum will be two years.
I'm hoping it won't be much longer.
I'm REALLY hoping that when they do reunite, Luther Dickinson will still be in the band.
I'm planning on seeing them live every chance I get where distance and cost aren't unreasonable.

Although I've bought their albums for years I've only seen them live once (on the last tour) and have regretted the fact that I never went to see them before that ever since. What an amazing band. I understand that they aren't some people's cup of tea but, for me, $ for $ I'd rather see the Crowes 3x for the same cost as seeing the Stones 1x. Damn that's painful to admit as I'm one of the few here still hoping for a 2013 Stones tour.

Peace,
Mr DJA

My advice is to go see CRB when you get a chance! I saw them about 6 months ago when they played in Felton, CA near my home. It was a very musical and fun night. Rock and Roll is alive and well and these guys will recharge your batteries with a single show. Chris is singing wonderfully and in these intimate venues really puts it out there. I don't imagine those 800 seats will be available for very much longer, he should be able to sell out that place. Good luck. peace

Saw them open for Robert Plant in 1990 when they were still "Stonsey". Saw them again in 2008; blew me away. Great vibe band for sure.

so what is everyones favorite crowes album?

I think it would actually be Three Snakes.. for me, which I'm guessing would not be first choice for most. This is partly because it has two of my favourite Crowes songs, Nebakanezer and Girl from a Pawnshop, on it.
