Well, first of all, I'm not a legal expert, and charges would depend on what state or municipality we are talking about.
Some of the charges I can think of are child abandonment, abuse of a child, child neglect, contributing to the delinquency of a minor (by having a child in an alcoholic beverage outlet) and I would not doubt that there are other possible charges I do not know about.
In many cases such as this, even when it is reasonable to assume the parents made a legitimate mistake, they could still face charges and punishment.
Reminds me of my primary school days.
I'd ride the bus home, let myself in if no one else was home, do my homework and go out to play.
Don't hear many kids looking after themselves like that any more in my part of the world.

I remember my friends & I would cover miles and several neighborhoods on Halloween night filling huge bags with candy.
Never did our parents ever need to escort us.

I grew up in a fairly isolated area - we had a school bus but had to walk about two miles to get to the bus stop. Rode our bikes everywhere,used to hang out on the beach and in the woods, hiding cigarettes in plastic bags in the woods so they wouldn't get wet. Never went home until dinner, my parents just expected we'd be there, no cell phones to let them know what we were up to.

You can take kids in pubs in the UK. They're just not allowed any alcohol until they're 18. There are some exceptions to that........ [webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk] ............

Let's make a citizens arrest next time he sets foot in the U.S. I have some plastic handcuffs we can use.
And in Sweden social services would have placed the kid in another family and jailed the father within hours.

No but a friend of my mothers' left one of her 7 children at Frankfurt airport on the way to Hong Kong in 1966......only realised he was missing when an elder daughter pointed it out as the plane was taxiing for take-off.................

No, but I once left home to take one of my kids to dance class, got halfway there and realized I had the dance bag, but not my daughter. Minor, I know, but once you have more than two kids you are outnumbered and it's easy to imagine how the Cameron's could have lost track of one of them.
Not quite the same, but I was one of four children and things were often crazy, especially in the morning. My Dad had a VW van that often needed to be push started, so Mom would drag herself outside in her bathrobe in the early morning to push the van with her car. One morning she set off, started to push the van and it went into the ditch and flipped over. There's Mom screaming, thinking she killed her husband who quickly came around from the back of the house yelling "what the hell are you doing, I'am not even in the car!" Got rid of the van the next day.

Not sure where you're from Edith Grove, but it doesn't happen much where I live either. My 13 year old is amazed that so few of his friends can wander past their neighborhoods and aren't allowed to cook anything on the stove. Still, I know my kids have a lot less freedom than I did. Different times.

sold one of them for a ticket to a show on the bigger bang tour,best deal i ever made.i still wonder sometimes though,whatever happened to ....that metal they used to build the stage.
i'm kidding of course,kids should never be around loud music or sporting events that have loud, unruly crowds.while the event may seem historic to you and something that is a must see-by the time your child grows up it will be a non-event and pop culture will have moved on,you'll just look stupid for have taken them there.

I remember my father taking me as an 11 year old to see Pele play for Santos against Hong Kong in January 1971 a few months after Brazil won the 1970 World cup and got his autograph, tremendous day which I remember like yesterday.
Also remember wandering around HK with my younger brother for hours collecting match boxes and books from Airline offices, hotels, restaurants and nightclubs, seeing poledancers practising in the afternoon in the Suzie Wong club was a highlight.

My sister had twins and the first time i went to see them we went to lunch with her inlaws in a nearby pub. Had too take loads of baby crap with us. As we were leaving she put one in the pram (awake one), checked she had the other stuff and said don't forget the carrier. I left with the carrier and casually said "got both of them?" as a joke she checked and asked why the carrier was empty. Other baby was still with his Grandad. I can see how easy it is to do.
