Bruce Thomas in the Attractions is together with Paul McCartney my favorite lead-bass-players...

I was driving home early Sunday morning through Bakersfield...

Not perfectly mixed for the bass but Paul is all over with his fantastic Bass-play:

Yeah the bass on I Saw Here Standing There is great, not sure it's like a lead guitar though.

Great fun to play as well!

Macca is your guy.
He's the greatest, period.
He gave the early stuff melody, the later stuff sophistication.

Ronnie Wood is an amazing bass player. That bassline from "Emotional Rescue" is one of the best in the Stones' catalogue.

Doesn't have to think he's the lead guitarist but I do love a melodic bass player and someone who is not stuck to the kick drum with superglue. That works for a while but tends to get boring pretty quickly.

Chris Squire is the man for me. Love his style and especially his SINGING. That guy just drips musicality to me.

But in the end some of my favorite bass lines are the beautiful walking ones done by John Paul Jones in the Lemon Song and What Is and What Should Never Be. peace

James Jamerson of Motown
Tommy Cogbill of Muscle Shoals
John Enwistle

I agree about Ronnie's bass in Emotional Rescue - it makes that song just kick and pop.

Watching Billy Sheehan back in the day play with Talas was a first. Never like it though.

i still find it hard to understand how a dull white guy (Bill) plays with 20 times more funk and flair than Miles-accredited dreadlock-sporting black guy (Darryl).

one of the things lacking from most latter-day Stones is a melodic,, funky bass line that doesnt just chug along playing the guitar chords' notes

This is Tony Levin, he's playing what's called a 'Chapman stick'.

Love me some Les Claypool.

He is a lead guitarist. What would Primus sound like without his bass?

Not to forget Big Country bassist Tony Butler, whose work shines on Pete Townshend's Chinese Eyes album.

Love his sophisticated vocal harmonies. He once said that his choirmaster taught him everything he knows about music - I believe it.

And of course Pino Palladino. Entwistle, Butler, Palladino, because Townshend is essentially a rhythm guitarist.

This isolated bass didn't really sound nice to my ears (the whole track does of course, it is great), I watched it on youtube and people say it was John who played the bass. I believe it.

Except for the fact that John had no facility with bass. Add that to the fact that the excerpt that made it on to record was taken from what was actually a 20-minute in-studio jam, which is why at the end Macca shouts "I've got blisters on my fingers!" The isolated bass reveals a harsh twang uncharacteristic of Macca's other bass playing tracks with the Beatles--because of what inspired him to write it. He revealed in an interview way back that at the time the Who were boasting that they had just recorded the loudest, nastiest track ever, and decided in his competitive spirit that the Beatles should record the loudest, nastiest track ever. That rough twangy bass is Macca doing a John Entwistle.
