I've played my fair share of air guitar over the years to this song after a few drinks.smileys with beer

It isn't a great song per se, but has so much raw energy. Total guitar song.

Mick should really use the word "lies" in it a bit more often, looks like it's only mentioned 66 times.

I like it, but I actually prefer this sloppier outtake:

Worst song on Some Girls.

That would be Respectable.

Respecable is second worst...

I was driving home early Sunday morning through Bakersfield...

Pure brilliance!

Ace playing by Ronnie and Keith, great sound and Mick is singing his a&/ off!

Ace playing by Mick too.

Take off this piece of crap off Some Girls, replace it with Claudine and boom.

Claudine is pretty weak. It doesn't go anywhere musically, and is a one-joke wonder lyrically. Basically a novelty song rightly left off the original record.

Yeah, but it's pretty interchangeable with Lies, except its better. Lies is ludicrously bad. If it's supposed to be punk, it's lame. Claudine is at least a humourous time filler to end an album side.

i agree with those who consider Lies the weakest tracks of SG, but without havening a real dislike for it as for songs like "indian girl" from ER or "blinded by love" from SW...

"respectable" on the other hand is in a totally other category or class of songs - one of the typically stones rockers which i love! (and by the way, much, much better than claudine, which is mediocre at best)

Well, he's a bit less audible there, but I know he plays the third guitar. I like Keith's guitar (the riff) and Ronnie's melodic leads the most.

However, this one is a good example of the three guitar-attack working. It doesn't always work as well, though.

Actually Lies is just as bad a the title cut Some Girls. In fact most of the album blows. Punk? What a waste. Music for people that don't know how to play.

Right... Miss You, Beast Of Burden, Before They Make Me Run and Far Away Eyes really blow eye popping smiley

You go play the pedal steel guitar on Far Away Eyes - or the harp on the title track, and I'll listen closely when you come crawling back saying it takes some musicianship after all smiling smiley

Read again. I said Punk is for people that can't play. Far Away Eyes etc aren't punk songs. Anyways the whole album is way overated. I don't play harp but I do guitar and pedal steel. Nothing to these songs. After you've been at for awhile you can play any of this stuff.

Ok, my bad.

Sure. You can play anything you want, if you practise hard enough, but I haven't heard anyone play like Keith or Ronnie - that's why the Stones are so good...

It's the way you play it...

Over rated. Really? By whom?

This song is hilarious. It's suped up fast blues. I love it. Yeah it's not a 'great' song but it's a great song, it's great filler. A ton of energy from a bunch of old men at the time. Aside from how fast and furious it is the lyrics are fantastic. Has anyone ever tried to sing them along with the song? It's a riot.

it's their shortest song title, i think...tied with tops. these things matter. the only way they could top that is by making it a lie.

Eggzactly - I love the entire album, it's the one that got me started on Stones, especially w/ songs like Lies and Respectable, but the one track that I've grown to love more & more over time is Some Girls, which I consider to be one of the best stones songs ever, amazing mix of guitar & harp throughout - great drumming & bass too, I might add -- lyrics are a little silly I suppose but fun enough nonetheless. Still the guitar/harp mix on this track is magical!

Almost all people here, liking the song or not, seem to rate "Lies" as the weakest song in the album. Me too. It is a filler per se. I have never liked it very much but still it needs to be in that album if SOME GIRLS is supposed to be SOME GIRLS...grinning smiley

Let me explain. SOME GIRLS were reaction to the punk and "Lies" is probably is the only song that actually pretends to be a punk song. Played damn fast and lyrically exactly that... Of course it does end up sounding like really real punk - you never can get that out of the band whose rhythm section consists of Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman and Keith Richards. No way. grinning smiley "Lies" is the closest you will get from those guys, if they develop their delicated rhythm&blues groove into that direction (it goes clearly further than the other three-guitar 'faster faster faster' attacks on the album - I can hear Jagger exactly in this song shouting that order to his rhythm section!).

There were better songs in SOME GIRLS sessions. Even the bonus album is a manifestation of that. But I can understand why they chose "Lies" instead. The song is a statemennt of the nature of the album. Just think of if it had been replaced by some of those country&western songs they seemed to create so easily at the time? It might been song-wise even a better album is some sense then, but no way that would have given SOME GIRLS a statement-like reputation it had at the time. There were already enough c&w influences in the album. So an energetic, three-guitar attack, lyrically naive in purpose, was the stuff they wanted to do, and not just aim their market to Nashville.

So I claim that "Lies" is an important filler for SOME GIRLS - it really sets the special mood the album has. Clearly it is a Jagger song in the sense that he has tries to follow the trends, and actually is not ending up that convincing at all (something we would get used to during the 80's). But who cares, during that punk era, even not being too convincing, even failing, was a rather punk thing to do... just give it a try, man... "FASTER, FASTER, FASTER!!"thumbs up smiley

No, Claudine was amusing at the time, but is dated, and is worse than Respectable, which is the worst song on Some Girls.

Techncally the 'weakest', or less distinctive, track on SG, but as Doxa pointed out, part of the album's theme, sound as a whole.
It has that energy.

This song has energy to burn but not one of my favorites. Hard to imagine the Stones even releasing it today. As crumbling_mice said, I think it was trying to be rock and roll/punk and did as good of a job representing that as the Stones have ever done. Almost acceptable for 1977/78 but this one doesn't stand the test of time.

I wonder why it was chosen over all the other Some Girls tunes that we got on the Deluxe issue? It pales in comparison to most of them. It had to be Mick thinking it was punk enough to be cool. next! peace

BobSegerish? I once counted how many times Bob Seger said Against The Wind in that particular song. Lies is that kind of song. Only fast. Yes, I'm going with BobSegerish as my adjective. smiling smiley

Worst of Some Girls, the track that makes the album a bit overrated. It's too loud, fast and sloppy. Respectable and Neighbours are much better attempts of making a similiar "punk" rocker. There are B-Sides and Outtakes from that era that's better.

I like Neighbours too, but to me, Lies is the far superior of those two.

I guess Bob Seeger does it on purpose. I just listened to a Glen Frey interview on a classic rock station in New York City and, strangely, he said that the best advice he ever got from anyone lyrically was from Bob Seeger telling him that you can't repeat the song name too many times in the tune. confused smiley peace
