Lies
(Mick Jagger / Keith Richards)

Pathé Marconi Studios (EMI Studios), Boulogne-Billancourt, Paris, France,
October 10 - December 21, 1977

Mick Jagger - vocals, electric guitar
Keith Richards - electric guitar
Charlie Watts - drums
Bill Wyman - bass
Ron Wood - electric guitar

Lies, dripping off your mouth like dirt
Lies, lies in every step you walk
Lies, whispered sweetly in my ear
Lies, how do I get out of here?
Why, why you have to be so cruel?
Lies, lies, lies, I ain't such a fool

Lies, lies in my pappa’s looks
Lies, lies in my history books
Lies, lies like they teach in class
Lies, lies, lies, I catch on way too fast
Fire, fire upon your wicked tongue
Lies, lies, lies, you're trying to spoil my fun

Lies, lies, you dirty jezebel
Why, why, why, why don't you go to hell?

Why, why you think me such a fool?
Lies, lies, lies, honey that's ya rules

Lies upon lies, upon lies, upon lies, upon lies
Lies upon lies, upon lies, upon lies, upon lies
Lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies
Lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies

Lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies

Produced by The Glimmer Twins

First released on:

Pure brilliance!

Ace playing by Ronnie and Keith, great sound and Mick is singing his a&/ off!

The song I appreciated the less from Some Girls...a shouty song without melody or tune....anyway 3/5 since its Stones...

The melody is in Keith's riff and Ronnie's solos. Fantastic song, imo.

Charlie is doin everything to be able to follow (and he managed) (I wonder what Keith and Ronnie have been taken) and Bill is keeping it simple and Jaggers tryin to shout it over...Sorry but songs like this is driving me crazy...and a song like'Rocks Off' on the other hand really moves me....I wonder what the difference is between this two songs...

Not my favorite track off Some Girls, but as with the rest of the album there is a new level of energy and enthusiasm here. Punk music definitely gave the Stones a kick in the ass, and resulted in tracks like Lies with an attitude and swagger that was absent from their mid-seventies work.

I agree, but songs like Dance Little Sister (although a bit slower) had some of that energy as well, imo.

Great song! Urgent in your face balls to the wall rock. A punk version of Rip this Joint. Wonderful guitar dueling and some great angry divorce lyrics. Explosive, propulsive, and angry rock.

They did not play it at the opening night of the Some Girls tour, played it at the next two shows
(Atlanta and Passaic), omitted it for the next three shows or so, and after that it became
a firm part of the setlist, between Beast of Burden and Miss You. A setlist that contained
eight Some Girls songs in a row.

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

What a crappy tune. One of the Stones worst. Hate it.

Dreadful, thrashing song. Goes nowhere, a really bad attempt at Punk.

I would agree. By a wide margin weakest track on SG. I've always preferred the punkish tracks on ER over this one.

I don't really dislike it but when I made a CD of Some girls and the bonus tracks, to play on shuffle - something had to go allow everything to fit - it was Lies.

There was so left over nice songs that LIES should be released as a b-side. Same for FIGHT from Dirty Work.

B-Side is not for bad songs, initially it's for another great song form the LP just to let people buy the LP

Why did they include this weak b-side on the album and leave off a gem like Everything Is Turning to Gold?

This week's Track Talk (Lies) and last week's (Let Me Go) were two songs I haven't listened to in a long time - but where I rediscovered Let Me Go with pleasure and have caught myself singing it a few times in the last week, I've remembered that I never did like the studio version of Lies and I still don't, from the forced pace of the song to Mick's more or less incomprehensible shouted lyrics.

There are a few live versions on Youtube, and here the pace relaxes just a little and the lyrics are just that bit less in-yer-face, and the song shows what it owed to both Brown Sugar and Shattered, before it got punked up within an inch of its life... Sorry, I can't learn to love it.
