Very sad news. Bob's voice is a part of my life; I grew up to songs like "Ebony Eyes", "Sentimental Lady", and above all, "Hypnotized". The latter is one of the most amazing pieces of music ever recorded, in my opinion. It transports the listener to a world where things happen that are simply unexplainable through rational, scientific means. Bob's voice, dreamy and hypnotic, makes you realize that anything is possible if you remain open to the possibility of magic.

They say there's a place down in Mexico
Where a man can fly over mountains and hills
And he don't need an airplane or some kind of engine
And he never will.
Now you know it's a meaningless question
To ask if those stories are right
'Cause what matters most is the feeling
You get when you're hypnotized.

Goodbye, Bob, and thank you for the joy and sense of wonder you brought to my life.

Drew

This guy was a great musician. He only lived a couple of miles from me. I feel bad for him, his family, his fans. If there is a next life, I hope that he is doing better, that he has transitioned into it.

Dude was a consummate musician.

That phase of Fleetwood Mac was a good one, and in many ways set the stage for the ultimate success (though there was a bottom to hit prior). "Hypnotized" was played a lot on the FM station in my college town, and set the mood many a time....

Apparently Bob Welch wasn't in good terms with the Fleetwood Mac group of late because they didn't invite him when the band was inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame although Bob had been an active member of the band during a couple of years. Not cool.
Rock and roll,

So very sad to see this on the news this morning. This man's music was ALL OVER in the late 70's from his first solo album.

When did he move to Nashville?

His wife Wendy said he'd been having health problems.

Not good lately to be a former member of Fleetwood Mac with the name "Bob".
First Weston, now Welch. I'm guessing he didn't have health insurance unless
he got it via one of the publishing houses. Didn't know he wasn't inducted
with the band. Who here knows?

I loved his output and think he was best when Kirwan was still there,
though I know those two didn't mesh. Don't think Kirwan meshed with
anyone there after a point. His and our loss.

Bob Welch, RiP. No more Future Games.

Nice thoughts, but why did they dismiss him at the induction?

Anyway, here's a REAL rocker that recalls some of the incendiary workouts
of the original band, Welch sings it. The band seems to be enjoying it.

The Bob Welch years of Fleetwood Mac are very much underlooked in my view. Really dug the stuff Bob did with them then. Rest easy Bob...

Not sure if they purposely "dismissed" him...when they were inducted back in 1998, the current lineup at the time was in attendance (Fleetwood, Buckingham, Nicks, Christine and John McVie), along with Peter Green...but no other former members.

I suppose Jeremy Spencer and Danny Kirwan could have been included with Bob, but it looks like they just didn't go that route.

Tough news. Sorry for his family and friends.

Only 66. Way too young for that.

R.I.P.

I've liked all versions of Mac through the years.

I read that he had spinal surgery 3 months ago and the dr. didn't think he'd get better and he didnt' want anyone to have to take care of an invalid. so sad. He was gifted. Beautiful songs he wrote.

Sad news.

That was a really good era for that band, which was unfortunately dwarfed and forgotten due the accomplishments of the next incarnation. "Mystery To Me" is a fine album, I will play it this evening.

Thanks for the great music,Bob.

Terrible news, I loved his music...Sentimental Lady and Hypnotized are awesome tunes. It wasn't the bands' fault, was it, that he wasn't inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame? The Academy decides, right?

Hall of Fame controversy
When Fleetwood Mac was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, original band members Peter Green, Jeremy Spencer, Danny Kirwan, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie were named to the Hall, as were Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. Welch, who anchored the band for several years and three albums, was not. "My era was the bridge era," Welch told the Cleveland newspaper the Plain Dealer in 1998, after he was snubbed by the Hall of Fame. "It was a transition. But it was an important period in the history of the band. Mick Fleetwood dedicated a whole chapter of his biography to my era of the band and credited me with 'saving Fleetwood Mac.' Now they want to write me out of the history of the group. It hurts."
Welch went on to tell the Plain Dealer, "Mick and I co-managed the group for years. I'm the one who brought the band to Los Angeles from England, which put them in the position of hooking up with Lindsey and Stevie. I saw the band through a whole period where they barely survived, literally." At the time, Welch believed that he had been blackballed by the Hall because of the breach of contract lawsuit against Fleetwood and John and Christine McVie. At the time of his snubbing by the Hall, he believed that the falling out with three band members led them to pressuring the selection committee into excluding him from the Hall.
In a 2003 online question and answer session on the Fleetwood Mac fan site The Penguin, Welch revised his opinion of why he was snubbed by the Hall. He had recently attended a Fleetwood Mac show and visited the band members back stage after the show. The visit reconnected him with Mick Fleetwood, his ex-band mate and ex-manager, after being estranged for many years. (He had never been estranged from Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, who were not party to the lawsuit.) By 2003, Welch believed that he had been snubbed by the Hall as the directors in New York, music industry insiders, did not like his style of music. However, he did believe that the lawsuit was a factor in his being blackballed, as it prevented him from getting in touch with Mick Fleetwood, whom he was not talking to at the time of the induction, who may have otherwise have used his influence to get Welch included with other members of the band. (Jerry Garcia had used his influence to get 12 members of the Grateful Dead inducted into the Hall, including some band mates whose contributions were considered marginal.) Welch said he had also communicated with Christine McVie but was still estranged from John.

This HoF business is really ugly. Shame on Fleetwood Mac for this exclusion.

A sad footnote to this whole tragic story.
