I thought Macca was OK, strange song choice with MMT and Ob-la-Dee, but OK. LALD was great as usual. He's capable of better though.

He looked terribly old at the end when the sour faced Queen arrived on stage. Maybe it was the lighting, maybe he's just old.

As for Elton John...??? What happened to his voice? Was he drunk? He didn't look at all well.

I heard Cheryl Cole had a shocker.. who would have thought she couldn't really sing?

It was a very poor gig. No-one stole the show. I enjoyed the pagentry and the graphics on the front of the Palace were great. Otherwise what a pile of dross!

If that was meant to showcase British music it failed.

I wasn't imagining Eltons slurred singing was I?

He's been ill recently and cancelled gigs. He was interviewed on TV beforehand and said that he'd had pneumonia.

As for his head, it looked like a Corgi to me; I wonder if the Queen is missing a dog?

You'd think Macca would have played "Her Majesty" from the Abbey Road album. Maybe he didn't have a bellyful of wine.

I now realise what I have in common with The Queen. It was nice to see her obviously hating every moment of it and having to force a grin when she was forced on stage by Gary Barlow of all people! Funny.

Macca was good though. Just a shame about the rest.

Very strange way to end the show, it had to be Hey Jude, that's what everybody was expecting and would have actually seemed like a finale. Obla de - who would end a show on that? Macca has been touring and his voice was shot, Elton, as somebody above said, has had pneumonia and his voice was shot. Shame the Stones didnt do it, that would have really been something to see.

Sadly many of the "heritage" acts are now showing signs of vocally ageing.

Both Elton and Macca struggled - saw both live recently and when you are at their gigs you don't notice the vocal problems so much - due to a combination of atmosphere, alcohol and sound mix.

On TV, with an unforgiving mix, they both were clearly struggling.....as was Stevie Wonder.

The only older act to impress was Tom Jones.....he can still cut it live and appears to have lost very little (if any) of his vocal power!

McCartney played a pretty ill judged set i thought, MMT may be a good start to a regular gig but it didn't work at all.Live and Let die was the obvious highlight but Oh Bla Di to finish? A thousand songs and he chose that one!?

Really enjoyed Madness on the roof and the display on to the palace was spectacular. Makes me think that the Olympic opening ceremony might be half decent after all.

Stevie Wonder was very good too and Grace Jones was random, bizarre and memorable.

Elton looked very peaky behind Charles at the end.

Couldn't agree more - my thoughts entirely. Not seen much of Jesse J until last night but I thought she was good.

I actually saw Tom Jones just a few years ago and WOW, he has an amazing voice still! Shocking how great he sounded. I'll watch the show tonight here in the States. You can only imagine that for the Queen, it was just a royal pain! To be out in the cold & damp at her age with what she probably considers noise must have worn her out! Still, she is a good sport!

I tuned in for the last half hour of the "extravaganza", mainly to see what McCartney sounds like in 2012 (doing his rock bit that is, as opposed to his recent album, where he sounded just fine doing the old standards). Although I am a pretty big fan, and I like to see creative musicians doing well in their "old age", I just couldn't help thinking that perhaps for him more than some others, it may be a good idea to give the "game" away? The voice was really not happening.

I haven't kept any kind of track of his recent live performances, but is it really just down to the voice being shot after having just been on tour? There's a huge loss of range now (compared to say even 5 years ago), and in my opinion it's painful to hear him try to sing the Beatle /70's Paul repertoire. Based on this performance, I really can't see much appeal in the P.M. concert experience from now on. As a fan I sort of wish that he'd just completely do something else at this point. make a clean break with the "brand" (esp. touring-wise) which I think he's done as much with as he's ever going to do.

I thought that Mick Jagger sounded vital enough on SNL, and I think people like Paul Simon, Lindsey Buckingham, Chrissie Hynde, Stevie Wonder ("A Time To Love" from about five years ago) and many others adapt and create great work at his approximate age (as often does P.M. in the studio). But the performance just made me wonder if this role-playing of one's 25 year-old self at seventy has finally well and truly crossed over into something that just cannot in any way be taken seriously, even by a fan (a la Randy Newman's "I'm Dead /But I Don't Know It/".

Anyway, I'm just another bugger with an opinion at the end of the day, but I'd be interested to see if anyone else (especially those who have nothing against McCartney in general) felt a similar hollow feeling upon viewing this, ha! Or if you thought it was perfectly fine...

Doing SNL solo in NYC is a much different statement than doing the Queen of England in front of the whole motherland without your "mates", especially after the drummer said he wished they could have done her as a band.

Anyone thinking Maccas voice was "shot" just hasn't been listening the past few years.

Yeah he's a bit hoarse, but then some of his best records over the years have been with his "hoarse" voice.

I think he did OK vocally and I only hope when I am nearly 70 I can be anywhere near as active as him.

I thought his and the bands overall performance wasn't as great as it can be, the guitarists looked a bit wide-eyed and strained. Maybe it was the occassion and the weird place they were playing. Not your normal gig.

Ob-La-Di as a finisher though?

I wouldn't have chosen that over dozens of others he could have picked.

Hey Jude and waving cigarette lighters would have been the natural ending I suppose.

Musically the show was extremely mediocre, I had expected England to put on something more glamourous.
