George Martin has said in several interviews one of the things he most regrets from his career with The Beatles was not including Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane on Sgt Peppers. But to be fair to Martin, The Beatles were originally thinking about making a concept album about their childhood and Liverpool. Hence those two songs starting a frenzy of ideas and writing. Soon the original idea faded and with those two songs, they wanted to get something out, knowing they were going to take some time on the next full album. They also worked hard on a vision and soundscape and films for both songs, and they were released as a gap filler between their release and the future release of their new album. Very similar in some ways to Rain and Paperback Writer not being released on Revolver. Both would have felt right at home on Revolver. As was mentioned above, there was a few songs left off Sgt Peppers, Its Only a Northern Song, and the long unreleased acid jam Carnival of Light, that McCartney wanted on Anthology, but was vetoed by Harrison. That song is interesting in that is was made purposely for a acid rave The Million Volt Light and Sound Rave at the Roundhouse in London and was even debuted at the rave. Then quickly spirited back to the vaults. The idea of Sgt Peppers actually didn't occur until halfway through the recording sessions when McCartney gave the song, and the germination of an older idea he had about being a different band, was proposed at that session and agreed upon.
The other thing to remember is The Beatles had a policy of not putting their singles on their studio albums. And for the most part most of their singles were stand alone releases. Which is pretty cool and amazing.
A wonderful anniversary for an album that strangely was over hyped in history for a long time, and often thought as The Beatles high point, and through the years many got tired of the hype around Sgt Peppers and there was a backlash, even Lennon went along on it...but listening to it now, wow! What an incredible statement that just flows and is a memory of a spirit and a time. Time to crank it out loud. I prefer the Mono mix on The Beatles Mono box set. It is fun to listen to after having the stereo version imprinted on my memory. There is enough differences in mixes and sound to make it a new discovery.

It might be fun to compile an alternate track list for Sgt. Pepper, assuming hypothetically that Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane had made it on to Pepper--that means, with the spatial limitations of vinyl, that two tracks would have had to have been left off. Below is my list:

1. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band
2. With A Little Help From My Friends
3. Strawberry Fields Forever
4. Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
5. Getting Better
6. She's Leaving Home
7. Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite
8. Within You Without You
9. When I'm Sixty-Four
10.Penny Lane
11.Good Morning, Good Morning
12.Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club band (Reprise)
13.A Day In The Life

I like your placement of Penny Lane, but I think I'd put Strawberry Fields after Lucy in Sky, as I like the transition from With a Little Help to Lucy. And the punchiness of Getter Better would offset the more languid feel of Strawberry Fields, if GB followed it directly.

Wow, I can't believe I just put that much thought into this! But it's a fun exercise.

Artists and producers including Mick and Keith used to labor long hours trying to get the right running order on a record. Sadly, with itunes selling mostly single songs, the whole running order is largely lost on the current generation. It one of the reasons Pink Floyd wouldn't work with iTunes because they knew the effect of song order would be lost with the selling of individual tracks. I am guilty of making my own playlists these days and not very often do I include whole album sides or incorporate running order when I do have more than one song from a specific record.

I miss that whole thing. Funnily, I still spend alot of time sweating out the running order of songs on my own CD's before I send them for mastering. It's similar to coming up with a set list for a gig. Keith has talked about it quite a bit. He never wants songs in the same key next to each other , or two slow songs in a row. Everyone's got a slightly different method, sometimes you just get lucky like they did with Sgt. Pepper. peace

Hard to believe that Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane were left OFF this album so they could be "saved" for a single! This would never happen today.

I was just in Liverpool for the first time. The shop of the "barber taking photographs" is still there (different owners though). It really was emotional for me to see these places.

Very cool and very happy for you. I've never been to UK, and would love to go. Perhaps next year.

Have toured through the continent though, on a Eurorail pass for two months 25 years ago this summer. A year after Dirty Work and it was a lull in my love for the Stones.

Have a great trip Tele.

BTW, leaving Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane a bit like leaving off We Love You/Dandelion/Child of the Moon off TSMR or JJF off Beggar's or HTW off LIB.

Would never happen today.

Those Eurorail passes were the bomb. Do they still have those?

I think they still do have Eurorail passes, but the REALLY good deals are no more I think. I paid $500 for a two month unlimited travel.

Unbelieveable deal, even back then. I criss crossed the continent just for the hell of it.

Back then, Brit Rail was also not part of the Eurorail thang either, so I never made it over.

I need to gets me to London!

What with Child of the Moon being recorded in 1968 it was never left of Their Satanic Majesties Request.

I really enjoyed reading all of this thread!! smileys with beer I can't believe the total run time of Sgt Pepper is only 39 minutes! I think part of the true magic of this record was the way the songs all run together, only the slightest pause between tracks. Martin really was a genius! Even funnier how most of us know the exact order of all of the songs and can sing every lyric, every word.
Personally, I could skip Lovely Rita....would rather have Strawberry Fields AND Penny Lane included in the album. I agree with the person who said listening to Pepper ( and all of the great albums of that time) returns us to that era and for me, I actually get a nostalgic feeling in my gut, a real sensation in my mind and stomach...very pleasant...a return to a much better time for me.

And they only used 4-track machines
(Two of them, bouncing between them..)

(If you want to skip ahead to the full mix, it's at 6:55)

I keep listening to that portion of PBS' American Masters (TV show), Lennon NYC where Sean is singing "I need somebody to love." It is audio over still photos of The Beatles from that period. He says it is his favorite song. He asks "Who sings 'I need somebody to love?' You?" John replies "It's Ringo, but Paul and I are singing with him." The matter-of-factness of his perspective staggers me. John then fumbles around trying to remember the words and title of the song. Here is someone who helped create a song half the world knows by heart and he's trying to remember the title! To paraphrase..."Yeah that's me with Paul and Ringo." It's an exclusive club.

Like Dylan, The Beatles in general and Sgt. Pepper specifically are dividing lines in modern popular music. There is what came before and what came after. Sgt. Pepper deserves a careful listen as a complete work. To this day there are very few albums that make me feel the way I do when that album concludes. It is a inspired, stunning and enigmatic work.

On another minor note: I think the harsh electric guitar tone on Sgt. Pepper influenced Keith's SFTD solo.

'Come and get it' and 'All things must pass' is two intressting 'Left-offs'...They should have been on 'Get Back'...

I don't think Come And Get It was rehearsed for Get Back. All Things Must Pass was half-heartedly attempted, including an interesting version with John and Paul singing harmonies, but it was quickly abandoned.

All Things Must Pass was quickly abandoned after 107 takes, with John clowning around on keyboards. John and Paul would always take the piss while recording George's tracks. Ever hear the vocal sessions for Think For Yourself from Rubber Soul? Twenty minutes of John and Paul starring in the Goonies, with George all serious and getting annoyed as he attempts to instruct them on keys and chords and such.

Come And Get It was something Paul wrote exclusively for Badfinger, which dates from later in 1969. The demo is all Paul--bass, guitar, piano, and drums and all recorded in about an hour.
