I remember in 1987 there was a UK tv documentary about the Sgt Pepper Album, it was called "It Was 20 Years Ago Today". That was 25 years ago... how time flies

Hard to believe that Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane were left OFF this album so they could be "saved" for a single! This would never happen today.

I was just in Liverpool for the first time. The shop of the "barber taking photographs" is still there (different owners though). It really was emotional for me to see these places.

I'm glad they were left off. Though that's what you did at the time.
What I find fascinating is that at ages 24-26 (ages of the Fabs at the time of Pepper, unbelievable, really) they were already reminiscing about childhood (which seems to be a theme in UK psychedelia). Maybe I did, too, at that age. I certainly do now.

Very cool and very happy for you. I've never been to UK, and would love to go. Perhaps next year.

Have toured through the continent though, on a Eurorail pass for two months 25 years ago this summer. A year after Dirty Work and it was a lull in my love for the Stones.

Have a great trip Tele.

BTW, leaving Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane a bit like leaving off We Love You/Dandelion/Child of the Moon off TSMR or JJF off Beggar's or HTW off LIB.

Would never happen today.

wonder if they released this as a single to coincide with the movie, which was also released in '78.

I know I'm in the minority, but I really loved the movie lol smiling smiley

They actually started a release campaign of Beatles picture sleeves. It was amazing how many re-charted and some great new singles, like Birthday. That was when vinyl was still the master and 45s were stuff collectable.

You can feel old at any age. Mick wrote As Tears Go By when he was 20.

I'm sure that's true, and yes, you are in the minority.

Here's the B-side, btw. The single bombed, peaking at #71. How could it not? 1978 was the year of disco.

They did release a few "new" singles in the 70s, but only Got To Get You Into My Life was any kind of hit, peaking at #7 in 1976. GTGYIMY (with Helter Skelter as the B-side) was released to promote the peculiar "Rock 'n' Roll Music" compilation. Later on in '76, Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, the White Album's "single that never was" was, for no apparent reason, finally released as a single, (B-side Julia) and peaked at #49.

Yeah, I didn't say they were hits, but it is amazing they were charting when they from albums long since released. Some cool picture sleeves too...

Eurorail doesn't work in the U.K. You need a BritRail pass. I actually paid less buying point-to-point tickets, but tell me this: Why is Manchester to Liverpool 11 pounds, but Liverpool to Birmingham (much farther with fewer stops) 9 pounds?

Nobody wants to go to Birmingham.

Gee, thanks for the English lesson! Because I never would have known how to properly write "I care"..

It should have been obvious that I was making a playful response to the other two posters, if you read the previous quoted posts.

There was also a peculiar rerelease campaign in the UK in the 80s where several key Beatles singles were released after 20 years. Note also the chart placing of "Baby It's You"--no. 7 in 1995, probably to coincide with the BBC compilation.
