Jonny Lang, friend of the Stones

This great blues guitarist and musician, who is now about 30 years old, will be appearing in Ashland, Kentucky on July 4 on the banks of the Ohio River. He has been a back up artist for the Stones, and has played with Ronnie Wood and Buddy Guy.

I just discovered him today, and he is DAMN GOOD. He is unbelievable. What a shame I had to wait this long to hear him sing the blues.

Lang is 31 now, and he was 17 when I saw him open for the Stones in 1998.

Imagine, a 17 year-old kid opening for the Stones.
I remember him putting on a powerful show, and not believing I was watching this coming from a teenager who hasn't even experienced his senior prom yet.

Also saw him open for the Stones Jan 98 in Vancouver. Remember he played Goodmorning Litle Schoolgirl. Always liked his song Still Raining. He and Kenny Wayne Sheppard came out around the same time and there were comparisons to the two.

Saw him open for the band in OKC 99 and frankly, wasnt very impressed(except with all the great "faces" he made). Now he had another older cat playing most of the lead while I found his blues licks to be kinda like "blues guitar 101". It WAS refreshing to actually hear an opening band playing music instead of whatever crappy boy group that happened to be hot at the time tho....

I saw him open for Aerosmith in '97, I think he was 17 at the time. Great set he did.

Saw a triple bill in LA in 99, Big Head Todd (who I think was the biggest draw) then Jonny Lang ( who was just being intoduced and raved about as a prodigy by the press) and Buddy Guy (being from Chicago I knew about Buddy, but he seemed fairly unkown to most of the crowd). Big Head Todd did their thing, Then Jonny lit us all up playing his guitar, he was amazing, The crowd was screaming his name non stop for an encore even as Buddy walked on stage. The guy next to me screamed out "@#$%& Buddy, bring back Johnny!" No one wanted Lang to stop playing. Buddy seemed to take note of this, and was not amused. He scowled at the crowd and started playing. Oh man did he start playing. I have seen Buddy many times, but never like this. After two songs the crowd's Jonny Lang fever was cured. And Buddy was just warming up. The guy next to me quickly changed his tune and an amazing night was had by all. The only guitar performance I've seen that comes close was when I saw Clapton follow Stevie Ray Vaughn in Stevie's second to last performance. Nothing like a little challenge to make master's raise their game.

When he opened for the Stones in Columbus (No Security Tour) I was thrilled. He put on a great performance and the sound was PERFECT. The touring sound engineer for Johnny Lang is phenomenal. I've seen him several times (97, 98, 99) and all 3 shows he sounded perfect...

HOWEVER... I was completely PISSED when the Stones hit the stage. The volume was about half of Johnny Lang's performance, the mixing was horrible, it was muffled, so forth, and NEVER got better. From my area the b-stage was prettymuch unheard. Get Off My Cloud sounded pretty, but had no impact. The entire performance was weakened by such a poor sound mix...

The problem was that Johnny Lang's mix sounded so kickass that it made it impossible to enjoy the 'sound' of the Stones. People wanted to roar and thrill to JJFlash opening the show, but they also wanted to HEAR the song, so they quieted down in order to hear the distant sound!

Enjoy Johnny Lang's playing with two great guitar legends - Buddy Guy and Ronniw Wood.
