Some Girls Bonus Material...Am I mad ?
Posted by: Spud ()
Date: May 29, 2012 19:51

When the SG bonus material came out...I really liked it... and played it to death for a few weeks, as is often the case with any new output.

I then left it alone for a while before coming back to it quite recently.

I am now obliged to say that the SG Bonus Material is, in it's own right, one of my very favourite Stones albums.
[and this despite the fact that you can't get it on vinyl !]

Am I stark raving mad ? is it just me ?

pure joy is correct. love this album, a mistake they didn't release years ago but a welcome addition to the catalogue.

AND YES, what were they thinking?! This deserved a vinyl release along with the original Some Girls. That would have been fun to have in the collection.

They could of made a double album at the time of some girls
I agree with spud the outakes stand on there own as a great album.

They should release some other outtakes (if they have more of the awesome calibre of Plunder My Soul or SG) as a "new album" a la Tattoo You. It could be a huge hit.

Now I'm inspired to put on Love You Too Much....

Well...it's not an album. It doesn't have a different title, it's not available seperately anywhere, it doesn't have its own physical identity and it's only known as the "bonus disc" to Some Girls. Even the Exile bonus disc sold separtaely at Target was known as just that...the Bonus disc.

I agree that it's the best collection of songs put together in a while (only because they're vintage cuts) but to view it as an album is a little much.

Well, the bonus songs don't really fit with the spirit of Some Girls. They don't match aurally, except for Claudine, which could have easily replaced Lies. I think So Young is among the funniest, sleaziest cuts they ever did. And I'm still fascinated by Bill playing marimba on Don't Be A Stranger.

Oooh, I L-O-V-E these songs. There is no better car music for me at the moment.

Do the girls still scream, when you perform on stage? KR: Not on stage, but when I perform, yeah.

One day, when the Stones are done with releasing "bonus" albums, there will be plenty of material out there for us to compile our very own "albums that never were".

I added Everything Is Turning To Gold, Sweet Little Sixteen and Hound Dog to the Some Girls bonus tracks, mixed 'em all up (the running order) and it's a helluva great listening time!

Out of curiosity...how does everyone feel about Dylan's Tell Tale Signs from his Bootleg series? It's an amazing group of new and alternate songs from his recent albums. When asked to name your favorite Dylan albums...does this CD make the cut?

Someday Baby is f a n t a s t i c.

Definitely a fantastic compilation. Get the 3 CD version in a box.
Some more great tunes on it, incl. a great live version of Cold Irons Bound.

47 shows...and counting...Hyde Park - July 6 & 13

Definitely a fantastic compilation.

Compilation it is. Album, it is not. Conceptually, you could say it might be an album...but on paper: it is not an album. Same thing goes with the Some Girls bonus cuts.

The stuff they recorded let's say in 1977-1979 should have been far enuff to release
a masterpiece like Exile .
When Some Girls has been released, it was...too short, later when I first heard the tapes from the numerous bootlegs, I'd thought, why the @#$%& didn't cut them officially and I'm still wonderin' whygrinning smiley
Ok most of this stuff is not quite finished, it's raw, messy but that's rock'n'roll and it's also the rolling stones workin' and rockin' like gods.
So yes this Bonus Material is the best official thing they've done since Some Girls.
For the leftovers that are still on the bootlegs, I'm listenin' to them quite often,
ie "What's the matter" is the kind of track that is not finished but that show us if necessary what the Stones could do in a studio.Awesome Sessions...

I think it's a crying shame Jagger felt the need to include second rate wannabe Pistols tunes, I'm talking "respectable" "lies", instead of some of those great tunes that turned up on the bonus CD. Apparently "Claudine" had to be left off for legal reasons as her court case for murder was ongoing..

Yup I agree. A fantastic bonus, and they really should have considered releasing it as a stand alone "new" release, in the spirit of Tattoo You. Great release with only one marginal song on it.

Wasn't it officially called Exile Rarities (or EOMS Rarities)?

Oh, to answer yer question, yes, you are mad. That 'album' is not nearly half of what it could have been, which is a hell of a lot better.

Yet alone factually correct...putting ER session songs on there... there goes any hopes of a ER extras release...

Yeah, I think it's titled "Exile On Main St. - Rarities Edition"

What a ridiculous omission.

Ha ha. That's funny you say that considering it's release life/status.

Granted the long version of Everything is Turning to Gold would have been cool. But the single version was recently re-released on Sucking in the 70's. And I guess they want you to shell out to buy that as well. It is one of the best songs from the Ronnie Wood era.

It's a bit odd but I always confuse that track's release with the amount of times If I Was A Dancer has been released...

Gold has only been released twice but in two different ways - the B-side release and the album Sucking In The Seventies.

AH! I knew there was something funny about Gold - it's on COLLECTIBLES from FLASHPOINT! So it is on two compilations!
