Well...it's not an album. It doesn't have a different title, it's not available seperately anywhere, it doesn't have its own physical identity and it's only known as the "bonus disc" to Some Girls. Even the Exile bonus disc sold separtaely at Target was known as just that...the Bonus disc.

I agree that it's the best collection of songs put together in a while (only because they're vintage cuts) but to view it as an album is a little much.

Wasn't it officially called Exile Rarities (or EOMS Rarities)?

Sounds about right.

Nowhere is it referenced as an outright "album." It's not listed in AllMusic.com as such and Wikipedia lists it as a "Compilation." The point is, the bonus "Some Girls" cuts are simply a compilation and cannot be viewed as an album. "Tattoo You" was slapped together with the intent of it being a new album--that was the band's decision and intention. The same cannot be said about the bonus disc on "Some Girls."

Ahhh, but a album is "a collection of recordings". Therefor Exile Rarities technically is a album, just not in the sense of 'the Stones released a new album' meaning recently written songs.

All albums feature pre-recorded songs, of course...

We must take into consideration the artist's intention and how they themselves treat the songs for it to be considered a true "album." You may borrow the use of the word to label this collection as an "album" (a collection of songs) but it cannot be used in the same way it is used to describe "Let It Bleed" or "Black and Blue." Once again, the Exile bonus CD nor the Some Girls bonus disc fail to appear anywhere as actual album.

This is exactly why I brought up Dylan's Tell Tale CD earlier. Few would be able to list that outtake collection right alongside "Blood ON the Tracks" or "Blonde on Blonde."

Oh I know that. I think some people think it's just easier to say it's a album because it was released 'as' a album. As in, it's a release.

But yeah, no, you're right. Neither are actual albums.

In the age of digital downloads and the virtual dissolution of the concept of physical albums, I'm wondering why you'd be splitting hairs.

This album is excellent. If they rereleased it in 6 months in vinyl with a new title I'd buy it, but I wouldn't like it any more or less

When the SG bonus material came out...I really liked it... and played it to death for a few weeks, as is often the case with any new output.

I then left it alone for a while before coming back to it quite recently.

I am now obliged to say that the SG Bonus Material is, in it's own right, one of my very favourite Stones albums.
[and this despite the fact that you can't get it on vinyl !]

Am I stark raving mad ? is it just me ?

Hi Spud,
i agree and if they had added Fiji Jim, Misty Roads, I Need You, What's the matter, Not the way to go, Lonely at the top ...

They should release some other outtakes (if they have more of the awesome calibre of Plunder My Soul or SG) as a "new album" a la Tattoo You. It could be a huge hit.

Now I'm inspired to put on Love You Too Much....

Hi Tomcat,
i think that they could make a new album a la Tatoo You using all good stuff available.
In another post i included a list of that good stuff!

...and these are my favorites (without considering possible hidden gems):

1. Not the way to go
2. I need you
3. Misty Roads
4. Fiji Jim
5. Chainsaw Rocker
6. You got it made
7. Lonely at the top
8. Living in the heart of love
9. Save Me (aka Criss Cross Man)
10. Hillside Blues

It's a compilation, but it works as an album, and I treat it like one. A damn good album too.

Yes, it does work as an album , which I think is part of the magic.

[unlike the Exile bonus material...which, though excellent in parts, just comes over as a collection of out-takes].

Phew ! Glad it's not just me

I absolutely love keep up blues. It true and not cliche Delta/Chicago blues. The riffs remind me of Robert Johnson but w Jagger's humorouslyrics!

Go Dawgs!

Out of curiosity...how does everyone feel about Dylan's Tell Tale Signs from his Bootleg series? It's an amazing group of new and alternate songs from his recent albums. When asked to name your favorite Dylan albums...does this CD make the cut?

One of the best collection of 'new' Dylan stuff these ears have heard in a long time.thumbs up

I like it BUT, to make three CDs out of it, well. are there not more studio cuts?

I think they made the right call just releasing the ten original tracks on one LP, at the time it was an LP. Just wouldn't sell as well as a double LP.

With that said, I absolutely LOVE the bonus tracks. Like others here, I think it could stand alone as a finished product, a new release CD if you will. There is no one "single" that jumps out at you, but most of the tracks are really good. One or more of these songs could have replaced Far Away Eyes in my opinion.

Still, Some Girls was an awesome album and these bonus tracks make it that much better. I think I like this bonus material better than the bonus material from Exile. Sad to say though, the bonus material from these two albums is better than anything they have released since Tattoo You, with Voodoo Lounge excepting (maybe).

IF they do tour again, let's hope they have the nerve to play some of these bonus tracks, especially if they don't record another album. I don't think they will since most of these bonus compilations were Mick's creation with little input from Keith and others. Oh well, we can always hope. I would love to hear So Young or I Love You Too Much or even Tallahassee Lassee live. Rock on!

I never did much like the punkier half of Some Girls (except Respectable), though I can see why it was thought necessary at the time to leave off songs like the bonus disc material to make room for them. Anyway, I was very happily surprised by how un-Punk the Some Girls outtakes turned out to be, and I love them.

Yes, it was a most pleasant surprise actually. I was half expecting an 8 minute version of Lies...in some ways I like this better than the original 'Some Girls' album.

It seems more like an album than the Exile bonus stuff, but I was more familiar with the Some girls outakes, (the one bootleg, not live, I had back in the day had this stuff on it) so Exile was a more exciting release for me. But both these archive projects, along with Tell tale signs are among my most played albums of the last 5 years.
