OT The last-ever studio album issued by Apple
Posted by: Come On ()
Date: May 29, 2012 14:57

...is Extra Texture (Read All About it) by George Harrison, 3 oct 1975 and completly bashed by the press..

I have maybe listen through this album a couple of times and thinks it's even weaker than any of for example Ringo's album...

Somebody here got it and enjoys it?

btw the first issued album by Apple Records was 'Wonderwall Music' 1 nov 1968 also by George Harrison...

...and that's a fantastic album I have been listened to at least 500 times....

thumbs up

"You" was intended for Ronnie Spector, just as the track for "Try Some Buy Some" from Living In the Material World was recycled from her (failed ) single.

The "extra texture" was his attempt to bounce back with some wall-y All Things Must Past sounds after the negative audience reaction to his Dark "Hoarse" tour. It's too bad he rushed the Dark Horse album out in time for the tour that really should have been postponed, because he was actually moving forward and attempting some new sounds with Tom Scott with that record. But the songs needed work and the vocals were a mess. Perhaps he put all the work (and polish ) on the debut Splinter album that he produced around the same time for his own A & M-distributed Dark Horse label.

I like "Tired of Midnight Blue" on Extra Texture and also "The Answer's At The End." There are some great "obscure" George songs (if that's possible for a Beatle ), like "Don't Let Me Wait Too Long" on Living In The Material World, that to my ears are much, much better than some hit songs like "Give Me Love (Give Me Peace )," which was HUGE, but never really did it for me.

The Apple records logo on the Extra Texture jacket shows just the remnants of an apple--it's an illustration of one chomped down to a core.

I've always enjoyed Ringo's albums from this time, but then I have long since been a fan of his solo output, thinking that he alone looks to carry on the sound of the Beatles.

Wonderwall is an album that I've only ever listened to once - and that was more than enough for me. I was never really a huge George fan personally. He had a couple of great albums, but otherwise, I could take him or leave him, much like most of John's solo work.

In retrospect it appears that John and George needed collaborators to keep them on track. John was admittedly lazy. See how George perked up when the Wilburys came along, or he would show up at a Carl Perkins special. Actually they all worked well when they had other people. I thought Paul's work with Elvis Costello was his best in years.

Even though i am afflicted with the mania i can think of nothing positive to say about Extra Texture other than i cannot imagine a time when i will give it a third listen. The first two listens were years apart and i seem to recall thinking on second listen oh yeah it is as bad as i remember. The fact that i have worn the ends of my fingers down a bit more by typing this much about this awful album makes me feel incredibly sad. That a Beatle could release such a pathetic pile of poo (and that dumbass here bought it ) is a rock tragedy on a par with the fate of Syd Barrett, Brian Wilson, Peter Green and Danny Kirwan combined. Indeed Barrett's 3rd album is more listenable, better played and has a stronger sense of direction than Extra Texture. It makes Smart Girls sound like Cabin Essence.etc.
I do not suggest anyone listens to this album to see whether i am exaggerating for comedic effect.
Actually i just cheered up a bit coz i remember now i bought it second hand. Now i feel a bit less stupid but i will still never get back the time i spent listening to this album (twice).

I think the world lost a great songwriter when it gained a great gardner.

When I first heard "You" when I was a kid (before I became a Beatles fan) I thought it was some woman singing on the radio! I was later shocked to learn it was a man. I subsequently heard George say it was a bit high for his range.

I sort of like ER. It goes to show how something good in your life can color an album that was played then. It is not a very good record but I still like it. except that terrible "Guitar Cryin" song.

I love George, but his output was pretty sparodic and uneven. Extra Texture like 33 1/3 suffer from some dated 70's gloss on the production. Some good songs, but just not very rock, and you don't hear a lot of Harrison's wonderful guitar playing. Too keyboard heavy. George Harrison was a nice release, but pretty easy listening. Soft Hearted Hanna is great and his update of Not Guilty is very nice. Then Gone Tropo was dreadful and I believe has the distinction for the lowest charting solo Beatle album. And he went into hiding until Cloud Nine, which was superb. And had a great run until the end. With Brianwashed. One of his best releases.

I thank Ash for expressing exactly my opinion on the album called Extra Texture ... Maybe not so strange that Apple Records came to an end after this album ...

My George No 1 btw is 'Living in the Material worldl that have tons of odd and very beautiful songs on it....

Gone Troppo, released in 1982, peaked at #108 on Billboard. Ringo the 4th, released in 1977, peaked at #162. Several of Ringo's subsequent albums did not chart at all.

Interestingly, one song from Gone Troppo did make it into the setlist at The Concert For George.

Having peculiar taste in music I kind of like 'Gone Troppo'....It's just 'Extra Texture' I find a bit wasted...

A couple George Harrison albums you've probably heard about but maybe have never actually heard.

I leaped for joy the first time I heard "You" on the radio. I bought Extra Texture the day it was released. It was a downer, even though I put on my best face because I was such a George fan. I still like You - it brings a smile to my face, even after all of these years. Thanks for posting.

Funny. This Guitar Can't Keep From Cryin' is my favorite off the album. Its a pretty sub par album, but thats a song I've just always loved. A personal favorite of mine and I don't expect many to feel the same way. But I guess it just shows how differently everyone absorbs the music. I think thats such a fun throwaway rocker.

That song, along with "Here Comes The Moon" off the 1979 George Harrison LP or even "Bluebird" by Paul strike me as examples of ex-Beatles running out of new ideas and revisiting/recycling their best work.

I understand that argument. And I certainly wouldn't hold any of those to the higher standards of their similarly named partners, but aside from Bluebird they are all songs that are just enjoyable to me. This Guitar is just one I've known forever and always have fun with it. I don't see it as much more than that.

it doesn´t mean that they run out of ideas just for having a similiar title of a song. Next thing is, these tracks weren´t even released as 7", so they were just album tracks. anyway, i like most of georges solo lps. they are great in their way. he was a great spirit, i also like many of pauls records, and i like most of the stones lps they made.

I too can see your point. And I do think Harrison did struggle with his writing at times. But I also think Here Comes the Moon is a different beast. Actually, it is very similar to Here Comes the Sun in that Moon was a story about Harrison's last mushroom trip he took, sitting on the beach in Hawaii and seeing the moon rise. I think he wanted a bookending. Sun is a much better song, but I find Moon interesting.

Come on. For me Extra Texture didn't age well. Firstly, it just wasn't a strong album in the first place. But also, when you listen to it now, it is instantly dated, sounding more cheesy than interesting. I don't mind You, but the rest of the album suffers from a lack of George's guitar and too many other polished studio players filling it out. The only discs that I frequently will revisit are All Things Must Pass, Living in a Material World, George Harrison, Live in Japan, Brainwashed, Wonderwall, Chants of India (kind of a cheat, but George is all over it and it is quite sublime), The Concerts for Bangladesh, Cloud Nine, and some cool boots. But I never listen to Extra, 33 1/3, Electronic Sound, Gone Troppo (horrid!), Somewhere in England (interesting to note that when he first submitted the album the record label refused it, and forced him to go back to the studio and turn out something better- but it is still a very turgid release). Dark Horse is a bit in between. There are some great songs on it. However, George's voice was blown out so it is quite a week release because of that.
Oh, and the new Early Takes is phenomenal! A beautiful portrait of Harrison.

Hey Whitem8, I realize how much George actually put out. When you first said "I ONLY listen to this and this, I thought "Well he is listing every single album GH ever did", but then i saw you list what you do NOT listen to, and it hit me that he had quite a number of albums.
It's a pity that only the first one is excellent, or even relevant in any way. Except for the Bangla Desh concert, and Material World which was still coasting off Beatles fumes, his material is just very weak.

Yup he did have a lot of albums, and I do think he had some fantastic stuff. Have you listened to Brainwashed? In many ways a more honest album than even ATMP! It is beautiful, and hats off to Dhani for working so hard on it.

No Whitem8, have not listened to it. But will check it out. I love discovering 'new' albums that Id' written off.
Sorry Whitem8 - I confused BW with "Wonderwall". Just read up on Brainwashed - will definitely check it out.

A big reason I love Live in Japan is Cheer Down. From Lethal Weapon, it is an epic George song that is a lot like Isn't it a Pity. It has soaring slide, great lyrics, and George is emotionally singing his heart out on it. A wonderful song, that stand with his best stuff. Also a good studio version on The Best of Dark Horse. I wish they would release then entire Tokyo performance on DVD.

After All Things Must Pass (which like Sandinista! by the Clash, could have used a little editing...I mean, two versions of "Isn't It A Pity?" Dylan did the same thing with "Forever Young" on Planet Waves, and I always thought those alternate takes belonged on b-sides, where they could be really treasured) my most listened to George album is 33 and 1/3.

He seems a lot more at ease with himself, having fun with tunes like "This Song" and "Crackerbox Palace," and the spiritual side isn't overblown ("Dear One" ) plus "Beautiful Girl" ranks as one of George's best love songs ever.

And "See Yourself" is the one Harrison tune that should be covered by Bruce Springsteen.
