To my ears this song is as dull as dishwater and contributes to ABB being such a disappointment overall.

I agree. Paint-by-the-numbers generic rock. It doesn't even sound like a Rolling Stones record.

Who buys singles now? No point talking about singles. They haven't been a singles band for over 30 years. I challenge anyone on this board to tell me the last single they bought! I know I can't remember what it was.. Oh hang on! It was the Mixed Emotions 12"..

This tune doesn't rock my boat. Sounds to me like a Mick Jagger solo tune, just a bit too much pop and not enough rock. Where's the riff? Very much a retro sounding composition with modern sounds.

And this is the style of Jagger vocals that doesn't really take much of a risk, just not enough of something, just getting dragged along by the guitars. The slide guitar tries to save it but too little too late, imho. Overall, it's like something the Bay City Rollers could have played or something. peace

EXACTLY!! Keith's fingerprints are nowhere to be found. This sounds like a leftover from Dogshit in the Doorway.

I dunno. There's something about this song that I like. It's not great by any means. I like it. It's miles above Streets Of Love and Following The River yet alone a few others...

Keith did have his fingerprints on this song......

Mick came up with the basic song but I came up with the chimes (sings descending major chorus melody). But I'd say that one's more Mick than me, absolutely. You can tell.

So, in general, A BIGGER BANG should not have been made.

And yet there is DIRTY WORK?

Ha ha. Gimme A BIGGER BANG anyday.

Minus a few songs, of course.

Most Keith Richards fans don't really want to admit how involved he was with a bigger bang. For example the verse structure if "streets if love" bears a striking resemblance to "love us strong." Sure it's clear Keith was writing it, and I'm sure it's obvious to you stone's geniuses but it's just so aweful that I'm giving all the credit to Mick! All Mick!

Not bad music at all. I just wish Jagger would broaden his muse, and sing about more than just women, girlfriends, lays, etc.

Regarding Kieth's involvement in Streets of Love, Keith says

"It's a Mick tour de force, in a way. But we all really enjoy playing it. When we first knocked it out on acoustic, we felt, Oh, that's nice, but it sounded kind of standard. So then Mick and I were saying, It's the dynamics that count. You gotta take it up and down."

But then when you reeally look at the verses "You had the moves, you had the cards...." it does come out of "Love is Strong" with some variation. Ah hell, who are we kidding, it's all Mick!

I'll tell you one thing about this song.......I've lived exactly what this song is about and it sounds like he did too. In fact....I've played both roles in this song

Same with Biggest Mistake. Man.............I've lived that song my whole life.

I may not care for Mick's vocal stylings any longer but his subject matter on discs since Voodoo Lounge hits home for me.

I think it would have been a good single too and they could have given Streets of Love to Justin Bieber!

First-rate song. I like how the guitar line follows Mick's vocal during the "baby, baby" sections.

Bookended by the excrement of Undercover (excepting the title track) and the coming apart at the seams of Dirty Work? Low standards, but you might have a point.

People's lack of appreciation for UC never ceases to amaze me. It contains their most fully realized reggae track, their most vicious funk rock workout and just some great rock n roll-"She Was Hot", "All The Way Down," and "Too Tough (a reworked Cellophane Trousers). It's edgy, experimental, is full of great Wood/Richards guitar interplay and holds up well nearly three decades later.

The last Stones single I bought? RAIN FALL DOWN. (For the remixes not on the album.)

The last single by anyone? PARADISE by Coldplay (from their 2011 album Mylo Xyloto).

Good post. Undercover is an under recognized gem. The relative commercial failure seems to have sent Jagger and consequently the Stones on a different arc - one that I have liked a lot less. The fractious critical appeal of Undercover seems to have informed Jagger that a less creative but broader portfolio approach to creating an album is more favorable to the band's commercial success. No wonder everything since then has been formulaic.

I suddenly like the song more now that I've seen the video LOL

Excellent post, wanderingspirit66 ... agree entirely with what you wrote except for the "everything" part ... IMO, there have been some non-formulaic masterpieces amidst the dross, such as "Thief in the Night" and "Laugh, I Nearly Died".

Individual songs still hold a lot of appeal for me. But the band and the subsequent albums are either formulaic or bi-partite. The formulaic Voodoo Lounge doesnt work for me. The bi-partite Bridges to Babylon works better for me. The two examples you point to are "solo" efforts within the Stones brand. The solo albums hold a lot more appeal for me (Primitive Cool not withstanding). There are a few good Jagger/Richards songs - even great ones but the signature Jagger/Richards riff driven rock-n-roll is nothing but formulaic and embarrassing e.g. Flip the Switch.. You got me rocking.. I go wild...

All said - I love both Let me Down Slow and It won't Take Long.

it's not on my short list.
the lyrics don't fit the music very well - he ends up having to emphasize wrong words in the lines
and it sounds unnatural and un-fine to me. my loss ...
