Let Me Down Slow
(Mick Jagger / Keith Richards)

La Fourchette, Pocé sur Cisse, France & St. Vincent, West Indies,
June - September 2004, La Fourchette, Pocé sur Cisse, France,
November - December 2004, March 7 - 9 & March 14 - June 2005 and
Ocean Way Recording Studios, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, US,
June 6 - 28, 2005

Mick Jagger - lead vocals, backing vocals, electric guitar
Keith Richards - acoustic guitar, electric guitar, backing vocals
Charlie Watts - drums
Ron Wood - electric slide guitar
Darryl Jones - bass

You look a little dressed up, you’re acting way too smart
Your face a little bit flushed for a walk in the park
And you’re clutching your phone as you walk in the door
And your smile's got a twist, you’re looking so hardcore
If you’ve something to say, don’t be too direct
'Cause I feel a little fragile, don’t hit the nail on the head

I said, baby, baby, let me down real slow, oh, no, no, no
I said, baby, baby, let me down real slow, no, no, no, no

There’s a swish in your step, there’s a gleam in your eye
Are you colouring your hair with some new kind of dye
But the first one to blink is the first one to fall
I don’t want a confrontation, I got my back to the wall

Oh, I said, baby, baby, let me down real slow, oh, no, no, no
I said, baby, baby, let me down real slow, oh, no, no, no, no, no, no

I said, baby, baby, let me down real slow, oh, no, no, no
I said, let me stretch out in the afterglow, oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no

Let me down real slow, oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
Oh, baby, baby, go as far as we can go

Produced by Don Was & The Glimmer Twins

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “A Bigger Bang” CD
(Virgin Records / EMI TOCP 66440) Japan, August 31, 2005

Vocals, guitars, bass and drums.
That's all we need. A solo by Keith, a solo by Ron.
But what with that high-hat to wake up the listener at about 10 seconds after the start of the song?

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

Y think that it is a wonderful dylanesque song.......... very stonish guitars and very melodic.
Well, it comes from ABB, and i like both (the song and the album)

A small, but a pretty song. The bridge is very good and Ronnie does a solid job in his solo.

Good song, very nicely played. Nice leads, both from Keith and Ronnie.

Nice...
But on auto pilot...Stones are able to compose and play this kind of songs while washing the car, doing the shopping, painting the walls or cooking some meal.

True, but still it's better than what most other bands can come up with, imo.

The acoustic guitar sounds like Mick to me.

Arrghhh... this is what happens when Keith lets Mick run the show and indulge in whatever pop drivel comes into his head. To my ears this song is as dull as dishwater and contributes to ABB being such a disappointment overall. But this video is easy on the eyes! spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

I still think this would have been a catchy single

I like the lyrics very much. it is so personal - the closest you can get to Mick

Auto pilot has a negative connotation, which this song doesn't really deserve. I think it would be more correct to say that of course they can write songs like this as naturally as breathing because it's what they do...and have done for ages, but that doesn't mean they don't care about the song or it's performance. Saying auto pilot implies they don't care. I don't think one comes up with great songs like this if they don't care.

It should have been called Let Me Slow Down. >grinning smiley<

Mick never does sing Let Me Down Slow, always Let Me Down Real Slow.

I've always liked this tune and also thought it could / should have been a single.

Good song. Way better than the horrible Streets Of Love.

I really like it. Would have made a great single back in the old days.

I like it too. but Let Me Down Slow - there is more vulnerability, much less self-confidence, and no showing off. This time he did not control the situation

Great song. One of their last true collaborations (even if it was more Mick than Keith). I wish they had the balls to play this one live instead of the predictable rockers on the ABB tour.

Yeah, what's so nice about it that this actually has a memorable melody, like so many great Stones songs, and unlike other ABB trash and drivel like Driving Too Fast, Dangerous Beauty or Infamy. Would have been a nice catchy single. With an imaginative marketing (movie soundtrack etc.) it even could have been huge. And a nice live version would not have sunken without a trace like It Won't Take Long.

But, ok, if you have a band which does not believe in their new material, shit happens.

Agree on all points, alimente. A different kind of band would've realized how much potential this song had and would've milked it. But I suppose there are no other "mega huge corporate" bands as big as the Stones that could've done it, though.

The melody as you mention, I believe goes to Keith for coming up with it. You can definitely hear his influence on that.

The song is fresh, well-crafted and simply catchy as hell. A wonderful guitar solo by Keith to boot--truly one of his last best.

I like this song. one of my fav. from ABB. Like the melody and remembered me at the "Between the Buttons"-era

Yecch. The trash can lid drums, the predictability. Very retro, like the regrettable Voodoo Lounge era. Face it, this band can still Rock, but Bill took the Roll with him.

ABB is a great work. This album in 1984 -85 surely could have been much more appreciated

Good call, and probably one reason I don't like it. This is popular music, not nasty gritty bluesy rock and roll.
