Great Goals by Mario Gomez last evening, particular the first one was world class! Gomez is a great player, a smart and intelligent guy, but the Germans (I´m german) are never satisfied, still critizing him, complaining about his "old school play", which is IMO completely bollocks ....

I´m pretty sure in other countries Gomez would be a indefeasible hero, but not over here ... can´t understand this!

I´m curious: What do other nations think about Gomez?

smileys with beer

I would have scored that goal too. He could have phoned to his mom: Hey mom, I'm gonna score a goal against Holland - before actually scoring. So much time and room he had. Incredible, with Heytinga (a good central defender) and Mathijssen (also not bad). But if a team isn't good in its head, all things go wrong. Just a matter of psychology, as my daughter explained to me. She's a first class footballplayer (for the Dutch and those who like a nice football video etc: see this link:

[keessiedeg.wordpress.com])

and a psychologist (specialisation team work etc) as well. So she's an expert whom Van Marwijk could have used to get his team back on track smiling smiley.

As for the second goal: again a huge blunder of the Dutch defence and not a very strong performance of the Dutch goalkeeper.

The Germans played okay, but not world class. The Dutch played far below their potential.

Crikey. I've gone from 13th to joint first in just over two days.

I'm sure it won't last!

Seems like the Irish gameplan was to give up beforehand and play with eleven defenders. Do they need Trappatoni for that? The only team that can defend themselves to victory are the Italians. Looks like Trappatoni thought he could make an Italy out of Ireland...

Ireland have conceded a goal in the first four minutes of both halfs in BOTH games so far.

Trap must have been giving his team-talk in Italian.

Good-bye Ireland - it is over. The first team to be sent home.

Congratulations to Spain with the victory.
But also congratulations to Ireland for their magnificent fans. What a great spirit. Losing a match with 4-0 and yet cheering and singing for your team until the last second. Bravo.

In case the Italians continue to defend to draws they don´t need Trap but could sent off home themselves...

For Spain the 1-1 against Italy was more meritorious/commendable than this 4-0 against Ireland

Iniesta is....perfect.

Seems like The Daily Mirror already has predicted the result of tomorrow's match between Sweden and England. Let's hope they are right:

Some statistics so far:

Played matches: 14
Total goals: 39
Goal per match: 2,8
Most common results: 1-1 (5), 1-2 (2), others (7).

We had a national debate today in Poland. Dozens of people talking whole day in radio and TV. The question was: which goalkeeper should play against Czech Republic. Players already know what the decision is but it is a top secret until the lineups are revealed. Whoever was chosen there will be additional pressure on him.

The best moment of today was Irish fans singing. Amazing.

Hail to the nation that has its national goalkeeper as the most important topic.

Yeah, I guess in The Netherlands the position of the goalkeeper is the only one that is undisputed.
Come to think of it, maybe it is not a bad idea to put Stekelenburg up front. He's tall enough
to put his head against a ball.

Yes the game is suspended for the moment. It's raining far less than a few minutes.
But lots of rain in some places of the ground. Maybe the game will start again at about 7 pm
