OT:Concert I am looking forward to J Geils Band Live - $10

Summer is here and the time is right for some cheap/free shows. Here is sunny Buffalo, NY they just announced a couple of our free/cheap Summer Concert series. The highlight for me is J Geils Band for $10 on August 31.

Others include:

For $5:
Yes with Procol Harum
Peter Frampton
Rodger Hodgson

For $10:
Sheryl Crow
Steve Miller Band
J Geils
Grace Pottter and the Nocturnals with Sam Roberts

Free include:
Burton Cummings
Ziggy Marley
Tokyo Police Club
The Cult
Mighty Mighty Bosstones
Fitz and the Tantrums
George Thorogood

Nothing beats music outdoors on a warm Summer night. And at these prices, I don't mind 'reaching' and catching a band that I normally would not spend money on. Anyone else have any concerts they are looking forward to?

With or without Peter Wolf?

With Peter Wolf. The only one missing is Stephen Jo Bladd, the drummer, who (I heard) has back problems and cannot handle playing live. I believe they also added a second guitarist.

I saw Peter Wolf with his solo band in 2010. He still has it.

WOW - great prices!

Only $5 for Yes?

Least expensive Yes tix in Phoenix are $53, in Las Vegas $63 and in San Jose $79.

Mark Farner and Marshall Crenshaw! That's an odd double bill! But knowing Crenshaw's wide range of taste, he was probably a GFR fan.

Marshall Crenshaw is surprisingly versatile. I saw him play with the surviving members of the MC5 around 2004. He did a fine job of playing the Sonic parts.

I'm a little surprised to see Sheryl Crow playing for $10. She may not be on the charts the way she was in the 90's, but she is still pretty popular and not ready to become an oldies act.

The concerts are underwritten by various sponsors, are held outdoors and beverage and food sales help keep them cheap. For most of the shows, this is the first year they are actually charging. Most of the shows will draw 10,000 to 25,000 people, general admission. Breweries like Coors, Molson and Labatt's help underwrite the costs, and they sell a lot of beer at most shows, at $3 a beer. It's a rare win-win situation for all involved. They do lots of non-oldies acts and lots of genres, including hip hop. More 'current' acts include Young The Giant, Sheepdogs, Fountains of Wayne, Seether, etc.

It sounds like Detroit has some similar things going, which is cool. It may be the Rust Belt, but we enjoy our music!

And I'll bet Crenshaw wishes he had written the GFR classic "Bad Time."

She's playing the County Fair circuit for some reason. You can see her for a comparatively inexpensive price here in Southern California this summer as well.

Hot damn. With Peter Wolf finally? Too bad about Bladd, though. I saw J. Geils twice at at the Los Angeles Coliseum in 1981, on a Friday and then Sunday. This was the entire bill:

Prince
George Thorogood
J. Geils
Rolling Stones

This was before Prince was PRINCE. He came out in brownleather speedos and a trenchcoat and was booed off the stage both days after three songs. The first time Bill Graham came out and told the crowd too cool it, this guy was actually pretty good. Didn't matter, the crowd still booed. On Sunday it happened again, and this time Keith Richards came out and told the crowd to let him play and not to boo. Didn't matter, they began to throw stuff.

Thorogood and J. Geils were excellent. As for the Stones, this was the tour that begat Still Life. I had seen them in 1978 on the Some Girls. Let's just say I didn't bother going to another Stones show until 1994.
