I'm sure this is not news but the unintended irony of LIFE publishing a Stones book ...eye rolling smiley

I guess the book version has more pages than the magazine that I saw at the checkout stand at the grocery store?

I had to laugh, because it was right next to a special edition put out by Newsweek...all about the Beatles.

50 years on, and we still can't get away from Beatles vs. Stones!

I saw it last week and when I saw the price, I put it right back on the shelf. $13 is crazy for a magazine.

And not one mention of Bill Perks. He was there for 30 years. The Glory Years. I find his story fascinating for his gritty war and post-war childhood in London, and for his life after the Stones. He's the only one who told the Stones to get lost. He's always quotable and will say things they others are too politically correct to do.

The version I've ordered is a largish hardback book. $13 seems a bit steep for a mag.

Aaah give up your smokes for a couple of days and you'll be able to buy it .

I thought it was well put together with a few photos I had never seen before .

It will be very collectable down the road apiece .

I picked up two copies...this edition is more of a book than a magazine

And no real mention of Charlie either! Bill & Charlie hardly get mentioned other than to say their contribution to recordings was 'minimal'. Ian Stuart got a few pages and some blurbs. Brian and Mick Taylor and Andrew for Christ Sake, all got photos and writeups. I don't think there's one solo picture of Bill and maybe one of Charlie. To not get the rhythm section of Wyman & Watts is to not understand the Stones sound at all.

I would agree that they should mention Bill and Charlie more than they do but don't get all worked up about it its a Life magazine who would ever think they totally get the Stones??

I agree, but there are parts of it that are promising. For some reason, I guess Keith's recent book, they go in depth about Stu. They almost make it sound like more of a story than Brian, which is ridiculous. And Charlie and Bill contributed more than Stu and Brian combined. Ronnie gets more space than Mick Taylor, which is also ridiculous. You're right, what did I expect from LIFE magazine, but I guess I expected more after they started out going into depth on Stu and Andrew, and then I kept flipping through, waiting for more on Bill and Charlie.

Once upon a time I bought every book that came out on the Stones....and then after awhile I started finding errors, like what year a concert photo was from, etc., so I got a little more choosy and selective.

My brother bought me this new LIFE, and while you shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth, I wouldn't call it great by a long shot. The "WHO IS..?" sections on Brian, Stu, Andrew, Mick T., and Ronnie are kind of a good idea for the casual reader, but they probably should have added Jimmy Miller, Nicky, and Bobby Keyes.

Mick and Keith need no introduction to the general public, of course. I guess Charlie and Bill should feel pleased that the editors feel that no "WHO IS?" is needed about them.

The whole book/mag seems put together by a committee who worked on the various chapters. I like the fact that there are a lot of early photos, but then things kind of drop off and there are hardly any later photos of the band in performance, which is odd because LIFE magazine did that cover feature on the Stones in '72 and dedicated a couple of pages to them on the '81 tour. There had to be more great shots on file that would have been better to see than multiple pics of Mick under a hair dryer, or session photos used in the insert of the Big Hits album.

Maybe a bunch of pages were cut at the last minute? There is something missing about this project....as if they attempted to get to the heart of the Stones all they ended up with is a big hole.
