So why is Roger Waters doing The Wall without Gilmour?

So he can pay his band salaries and pocket all the profits without sharing.

He has the guitarist play exactly what Gilmour played on the record, right? I am not a big Pink Floyd fan, so I was interested in why these guys can't manage to play together when the payday would be so big. I guess money isn't everything.

David Gilmour has no desire to go on the road and play The Wall for two years (he was actually offered and turned it down)... Remember, Gilmour also turned down $100-200M for a Pink Floyd tour after the LIVE 8 reunion (the other guys were up for it), so he's not about to be a hired gun for a Waters tour of The Wall, which is largely a Waters album to begin with. Gilmour has made it clear he's not interested in doing extensive touring any longer. It's nice that he agreed to make a cameo at the 02 in London, and 'm glad those guys buired the hatched and played one last time as Pink Floyd before Rick Wright's untimely passing...

Kinda cool of Roger to take the blame right there on stage for the unhappy era they went through
in the eighties.

I want to get lost in your rock 'n roll and drift away

I think Roger Waters is a class act; have always liked him.

Roger is forever bitter about his father being killed in the WWII (which is understandable) but if it weren't for those great men like his daddy he would be speaking German right now.

P.S. If only Keith could still play guitar like that...

In Pink Floyd's case, the breakup was the natural arc in the creative process.
One guy felt he was doing all the work and not appreciated for that, the others
felt rejection for their input. It's a classic no-win for both sides, especially
when the author of the ideas has a clear image of what the final piece will be.
Waters seems to hold on to an idea and not let go; when this happens compromise
will be nearly impossible.

Musicians are notorious for "possessing" works to the utter disregard for the
collective. It happens. It's human. Waters had emotional skin in "The Wall"
and the final victim was the band. Broken in two ... over the back of Waters Sr.

It's good they publicly made up, for two reasons. Personally, there's probably
always going to be distance. A lot of ill was said. I think that line in their
last LP, "The Division Bell", "... please tell me to go F myself" was probably
an encounter with Waters, and for that to spill onto an LP makes clear how deep
the anger ran between the factions. Second, it doesn't help catalog sales to be
in a continuing war.

On "60 Minutes Overtime", Kroft asks Waters, to Waters' annoyance, why the band
broke up. While Roger does give all around kudos for their musical legacy, he
still downplays Gilmour's contributions, going so far as to point out he's hired
a guy who can mimic Dave's playing note for note ( and he does, too ).

Great song from a 1984 Gilmour solo album about his feud with Roger.

You can scream and shout with all your might
Dig in your heels and hold on tight
Either you are wrong or I am right

You speak the lines you've overheard
The ring of truth in every word
You know you're right and that's absurd

We really seem to have a problem here
But it is you or me
Whatever I have going through my mind
You always have to disagree
It's just a matter of opinions
It's not a simple fact
Why don't you try to see the other side
Don't turn your back

Now we survey this silent battleground
Recriminations all around
And still no compromise is found

Now we really seem to have a problem
And it won't just disappear
And all the friends we thought we could rely on
Just want to whisper in my ear,

"It's just a matter of opinions
You know you keep both in sight
Why should you bother with the other side
When you know yours is right."

Gilmour took on a big load with pressing on with Pink Floyd without Waters. He did a pretty damn good job considering.

He was also smart to let it go.

He's been even smarter for saying 'no' to anything else.

It says a lot. No one will remember Pink Floyd for Division Bell or Delicate Sound Of Thunder but they may remember a song or two from them. Fine, whatever. But he let it rest.

Like I said, it says a lot. Something other over-the-hill artists should take note of when it's about the brand name or the money that they've made plenty of enough of already... when the whole idea about putting it together again is motivated only by money.

What with the artistic temperment and a lingering desire to play their music live to their fans, you can never be sure that there won't be another tour.

Wow that is too bad, your missing out on some of Folyd's most stunning music. Meddle is absolutely epic. Echos and Fearless are two of the best Folyd tunes done. Dark Side of the Moon is epic. The new box sets released of DSOTM, Wish You Were Here, and The Wall are wonderful.

I think Roger Waters is a class act; have always liked him.

He's matured and mellowed into a class act, but he was a right bleeding bastard to work with back in the day, according to many. Read what producer Bob Ezrin said about Waters' "Teutonic cruelty" to other band members, especially the late Rick Wright.

I saw the "60 Minutes" interview on Sunday and got the impression that things have chilled AGAIN between Waters & Gilmour; did anyone else get that idea? When the interviewer pointed out that the music is treated like classical music in that the musicians play it *exactly* (guitar solos 'n all) like it is on record, and why doesn't Waters just have his old band mates back in, Roger leaned forward, looked the reporter square in the eye and said meaningfully, "There's a reason I left that band in '85."

The reason this is OT is that it's about Pink Floyd. Don't these people have somewhere else to go with their sickness?

Hey Toru A how does that 5.1 mix sound? Knowing the Floyd's history of perfection in the mixing process I'll bet it is fantastic!

Whitem8 I have to agree with you on the Fearless tune, I love that one. Me and one of my mates played it (guitar-mandolin) at a wedding as the song while the bride was walking down the aisle, it was a big hit in that context. peace

A Momentary Lapse of Reason was a helluva record and Learning To fly among others still gets plenty of air on AOR stations.

I never understood why Richard Wright was forced out of the band. Then they brought him back as a hired hand? Any of you Floyd fans know the back story to this?

From what I remember, something about him being too much into coke at the time, but if you'd asked him it was because he wasn't involved enough in the writing process.
